What Grade Would You Give Our Draft?

I don't know the prospects enough to say but it feels like they had a plan based on a need, didn't reach in the first half, and drafted players with some boom potential in the later rounds even if it's entirely in heights. Can't complain.

Laf and Schneider are likely the only ones who every contribute but you can say that about every team. As much as we like to scrutinize every pick, most teams are lucky to get 2 NHLers in a draft. We already have most of the pieces on the team or in the system, really just missing another top 6 center and was unlikely we would find it today.

Very true. Most teams are lucky to have two NHLers come out of each draft. Hoping One of cuylle or Berard make it. They both could carve out careers in the bottom 6 which would be fine and the latter possibly subbing in the top 6 if he hits his ceiling.

Did someone with actual information defend picks 2 and 3? I'm seeing A's all around when at first everyone contested the picks...? Almost a rhetorical question...

We might not win games on the scoreboards...

But goddammit, we’ll make them bleed their own blood.

Well the Pornman gave us the highest grade (and the only A+) so thats something.
He seemed to really like the Schneider pick (and Lafreniere of course) but didn't seem to be all that excited about our other picks. The grade doesn't seem to match what he says about the players.

Also Scott Wheeler hated the Schneider and Cuylle picks but loved the Vierling and Berard picks.

Gave a B. Feel like it was an A- B+ type draft. Liked most of the first 5 rounds. Schneider I am not as sold on as the front office but there is a reason they are paid for their opinions and I am not. Don’t hate the pick but am kind of just ok with it.

I am hard grader though and usually only think about 2 teams get an A a year. Think our draft is closer to the 5th best. Not talent wise because Laf makes us the best talent wise but picks vs where I would choose them.

Wheeler creams himself for small finesse players with high skill and hates anything resembling grit, size, truculence etc

My thoughts on this draft class...

Lafreniere is a homerun. Easily the best thing for the franchise!! The Schneider trade-up was a solid move, in hindsight. Snagging a pick from the Devils (and that was the case, I don't care what their writers say) and grabbing a solid defenseman is a great move in any sense. If Schneider can become anything like Trouba or Lindgren, that's a win!!

Trading Lias for a 2nd rounder is also a good move, despite the potential for Lias to spark his career in LA and thrive. Cuylle is a good get, though. Big, fast, shoot first and is heavily physical. I think a lot of teams are going to want him one day. Similar to how Lemieux was sought after. He says himself he models his game after Tom Wilson. I could see that and I love that for NYR!!

I like the upside in Tarnstrom, however, I think he was taken a little early. I had him in the early 4th because he has a good grind style. He does have the potential to develop a really good playmaking possession game. He already has that possession game and I think over time he can develop a good offensive game.

Garand is a good selection in the 4th round. Was one of the better goalies on board and is a good time to use a pick on one of those top goalies. He looks a lot like Georgiev and I feel this was, honestly, the BPA for the Rangers at that moment. He's already been discussed to make Team Canada for the WJC. I like the pick!!

The 5th round was a master class use of finding falling talent. Vierling was one of the players I wanted NYR to get past the 2nd round. He was considered a low 1st round-early 2nd round pick when the season started. An injury early on and being on a shitty Flint team diminished his production. Since his move to Barrie, he has been on fire. Love that pick!! Berard can also be considered a faller, although I had him more in the late 4th round. Highly competitive and could develop an offensive game that can thrive similarly to a player like, dare I say, Brad Marchand. Love the upside there, too!!

I'm not a huge fan of Matt Rempe. He wasn't a no draft for me, but primarily a 7th at best. He's big and speedy for his size, but I do think he has a lack of offensive talent. He can also be lost on the defensive side. I would've gone a different route. I do say his size and speed combo can be beneficial later on in his career. I don't like the pick now, but I can see this being a solid pick later on in development.

Hugo Ollas I haven't seen at all, TBH, but by looking at the stats and initial video clips, not only would I have gone with a falling defender/forward, I would've gone with a different goalie, too. With the way Garand plays, I think it would've been better to find more depth at forward or defense.

All-in-all, I would give the Rangers an A-. I originally had it at a B+, but Lafreniere is too good to not give them an A in some capacity. With Lafreniere, they were also able to grab players with physicality and skill. The fact that they were able to get a solid goalie prospect and grab center depth is great, as well. Good job NYR!!

I am pretty stoked by those two picks. I don't think there's any question Schneider's going to have a long career and be a major pain in the ass for opponents. I wrote down a bunch of forward and defense prospects last night and before the second part of the draft began and pretty much they were being grabbed left and right. By the time we ded get that 60 Cuylle was by far the player I wanted.

Schneider is a really good prospect. I am happy to have him--he'll probably have a good, long NHL career. I didn't like trading up for him. I would have rather waited to 22 and picked a forward there. But, I understand why the Rangers made the move, and that's fine. For me, he's like an A player picked under C circumstances. Kind of the same with Garand. Nice player, good value, not where I would have gone in that spot. But the picks are totally justifiable and the team clearly has a plan with them, so I can't really be too upset because in they end, they got good players. JMO.

A+.

We've had a bunch of good drafts recently, but this was the first time there wasn't that one pick (e.g. Lindbom in the 2nd) that tainted an otherwise outstanding haul. And I love the philosophical shift from trying to find value in overagers to seeking it in younger kids who are only a few days older than the cutoff to next year's draft.

Oh, and we got Lafreniere. :D

That was a calculated risk that they choose not to take. Cannot blame them; I would not have done it either
You know I was as pro-Lapierre as anyone. But we now know the Rangers were not comfortable with what they saw in his medicals. So that’s good enough for me.

For anyone who’s not fully versed in Rangers’ history, let’s take a stroll down memory lane. Since 1997, the Rangers have had two 1st rounders lost to career-ending injuries in essentially their first professional seasons. They also had two 1st rounders whose injuries before making the NHL pretty much stalled any development at that point. They had a top prospect and 1st round pick die during a game. They also had a second round pick with a known injury history have his career ended by a major concussion. I’m willing to give them a pass on not gambling on a player who’s medical history they don’t feel comfortable about, no matter what the talent level.

Looking around the league I don't think anyone had a bad draft, except for Arizona (but their circumstances should disqualify them from being counted)

Off the top of my head, I think Carolina, Montreal and Ottawa all had very good drafts

Columbus is questionable

I also think that the Wild had a very good draft.

Grade today: N/A as I'm aware enough to know my ignorance on the players chosen/not chosen. I've seen the highlight reels of a bunch. Listened to the talking heads rank players all over the place. I just can't have that strong of an opinion either way.

One thing I will say is the same guys for the Rangers that made the choices this draft are generally the same guys who have left the Rangers with what many people consider one of the best prospect/young player pools in the NHL. Doesn't make them infallible of course, but I'll give them the benefit of any of my doubt until something changes.

Separately, I think a fun thing would be a new thread where everybody with strong opinions about this draft can post who they would have chosen at the Rangers' picks. Kinda putting your rep where you mouth is. Just one player from who was left on the board when the Rangers pick came up. No explanations, just listed picks. Then the thread could be locked. Do this every year and it would be cool to come back and see in like 3-5 years.

B+
I like the Schneider and Cuylle picks, they add breadth to the talent palette
I am fine with 2 18-year old Goalies, especially if he huge Swede is genuinely athletic

I like 3 (Tarnstrom, Vierling, Berard) of the 4 late F's,
but similarly wondering if Rempe is genuinely athletic - there were multiple guys available that some observers rated as genuinely promising

I gave them an A. The draft is where you get to see teams build out their organization using a variety of strategies. I've learned to appreciate the subtly of the sport over the last couple of decades, and can say that this draft was representative of what the Rangers want their identity to be. Good news is that there is a lot of experience in that Mgmt group and they've got good long memories. NYC is not a market where the Rangers have won with young urban professional types. It's also the type of team where the Ratings are going to be sparse. You don't cheer for yups. You root for competitors.

It's why Henrik is a legend here. The Rangers went after some identity defining competitors and got them. I can appreciate that when it comes to building a team. Saw a number of different strategies utilized out there in the draft, and I'll come back to this point some other time. But I really liked what the Rangers did, and I can finally say that we're seeing a lot more of JD's influence. Great job on the clips... didn't see most of them, but those tidbits really did a great job of making the event feel like a Ranger family event.

As far as JD's other inputs go, I like big boy hockey. They got some big boys. They also made two very symbolic picks, both are redemption stories in their own right and that to me was a special move. Shows you that the group as a whole is dedicated towards improvement, and when your business is in the business of winning, that's damn good to see.
