Just a random late-offseason thought I had...

Back in the day, scoreboards in NHL arenas displayed the names of the teams, the score, the period, the time remaining, the shot count, and space for two penalties per team.

Now, it seems like each arena has a lot more live action stats showing on their multimillion dollar boards, including things like hits, faceoffs won, players on the ice at any given time, etc.

How much is too much? At what point do in-game stats turn a scoreboard into an LED Excel spreadsheet?

Which club's board has the right balance? Which are missing something?

Anyway, I'm bored on Labor Day and miss hockey.

Supposing it's mostly people under 28 with their children at games, I think scoreboards only showing goals is enough information for them to handle.

Showing shot counts causes animosity towards players when fans see their teams shot count is too low. It's more inclusive to hide this information and have the fans focus on the present on ice product instead of events that lead up to it.

Game and player stats to be shown during each intermission would be nice.

the score and shot totals and, well....duh.....the live betting odds! :scared:
The last thing I want to see while watching a hockey game in person is more gambling garbage. Its bad enough that I'm subjected to all those betting commercials while watching the game on tv.

I like the ones that show which players are currently on the ice along with their numbers

Aside from that, score obviously, time remaining and period, PP time if applicable, maybe shots

I like how teams are now showing the players on the ice. For someone who can't memorize all the jersey numbers outside of the star players and Habs, it helps identifying players easily from nosebleed seats.

Score, time, period, penalties is all that needs to be on there full time.

I do like when the scoreboard shows names and numbers of the players on the ice, since most of them are not easily recognizable.

Anything else is really not needed full time, just flash it up there as a temporary graphic. Even shot count isn’t something that really needs to be monitored constantly, unless they’re going for a record or something.

Slightly off topic, but I really like the idea of using the AR display technology that is now being used (mixed in its success of course) to make persistent digital scoreboards obsolete by having all of the needed information displayed in AR so that it looks like it's part of the playing surface or boards, instead of a bright distracting box at the top (or god forbid bottom) of the screen.

You would just need to have it in more than one location (just one in each end zone would probably be enough that the score could be seen within a second or two), and beyond that? Back to the old days, pretty much (no digital thing in the way of the game)

On topic:

Permanent: City / team name playing, score, period, time remaining
Situational: Power play time remaining, shots, shift lengths, lines and player numbers, shot speed
Fire into the sun (or just during intermissions if you have to): gambling odds
Fire into a black hole never to be seen again: player nameplates popping up any time they possess the puck on the power play

One nice-to-have is when they show time of day. Kind of a forgotten feature, but I appreciate it.

I'm not a fan unless its a replay. Any kind of techno-puck bullshit is god-awful

Don't get me wrong, I like the new stats that we've been getting over the last few years, but it doesn't need to be a constant on the main scoreboard. Stuff like hardest shots, fastest burst, longest shift, save that stuff for in between whistles when players are going to and from the bench.
From what I remember with our board, they rotate through those types of stats on the corners of the board in Pittsburgh.

The only thing I would add to your list is to add shift time for players currently on the ice. SOG is fine with me, but it doesn't need to be as featured as big as some of the other stats.

I miss seeing the shot totals broken down by period, as for everything else I don't really care as long as I can see the time remaining on penalties. I couldn't really care less about the shift time they constantly show now

The score, the time left and any penalty information. No screens. In fact do away with the scoreboard altogether, just show this on the stands where it usually says MAKE SOME NOISE or some such.
