Lou hasnt had a plan in years. He's still around because of increasingly old past accomplishments.

Pretty much. I'd argue he's been fairly lost the entire salary cup era. His team took advantage of a weak Eastern Conference in 2012, but outside of that, meh. The organization's lack of under 23 scoring talent right now is staggering. Larsson/Gelinas/Severson/Merrill is a very strong young group of defensemen but their forwards are ancient without any signs of help coming.

The plan is to nickel and dime his way to success with a smaller payroll. Lots of teams try that, usually not successfully.

Don't get what they're doing in there. That team is on a point where they should just blow it up and rebuild but instead they keep bringing in guys in their late 30s for no reason.

They'll be fine. D is a strength, goal tending is iffy, but they will draft a forward this year and next, and I can see Larrson going for a forward to even things out.

Hopefully land a few good forwards in the upcoming draft, which is entirely possible given it's depth. It's a really weird situation to be honest. Goaltending is set with Schneider, defense is seemingly set for a while and as homer as it may sound it looks like it could be one of the better defense corps in the league one day. But the offense looks mighty bleak and needs a lot of help. The sharp difference is quite astounding and somewhat worrying. But dependent on this draft I don't think the picture is as poor as everyone makes it out to be.

I actually think they will be just fine. They have a good goalie and some really good young defenseman. That is a solid foundation and one that takes time to build since those types peak later then forwards. And with a solid foundation it is easier to build the rest of the team upon it.

Wait, what? Goaltending is iffy when Cory Schneider has played nearly 200 games and is rocking a career .924 save percentage? I mean, the only guy with better career numbers is Rask at .926. Not saying he's the second best in the league but he's easily in the top half

Hopefully trade for a top six forward if available..

Easier said than done.

Just like Lowe in EDM, but at least Lou was a great GM for about 20 years and won championships.

The Devils need to bring in new and fresh blood and start over. They are going nowhere with their forward prospects and need to suck for 2-3 years to build that up.

'Start over' is very extreme. It may be difficult to bring in the forwards we need but it's still doable, and honestly they're the only piece missing at this point. If we can draft a guy like Marner or Strome this year, plus a decent one in the 2nd round like Meier, Looke, or Musil and while it's not a major turn around, suddenly things look quite a bit brighter. In addition, we could bring in a few more picks/players by dealing a few assets at the deadline.

The "plan" is to focus on our excellent goaltending and defensive prospects (which is more than just two guys) and build from the net out. The reason we don't have any great young forwards is because we chose to invest in D and G.

That being said - Henrique is a fine young player, the organization is high on a couple of potential late round picks they think might be steals, and we'll likely be getting a great forward prospect with our top-10 pick this year.

We just need a 1st line and a new coach, really. Of course it's easier said than done to get them but literally everything else is in place.

Top scorer is Adam Henrique (24) with 26 points on the year. Their next ten scoring leaders are:

Jagr (42), Cammalleri (32), Elias (38), Zidlicky (37), Ryder (34), Gomez (34), Zajac (29), Bernier (29), Havlat (33).

They basically have no A level prospects in the system.

Severson (20) is an excellent young defenseman and Larrson (21) has been great as well. They are solid at goal with Corey Scheider (28).

I realize they lost Parise to UFA and Kovalchuk to the KHL, but....those aren't great excuses for running a roster full of guys in their mid 30s with no prospects.

What's the plan here?

Well let's be fair about this. Its pretty obvious the Devils need to rebuild the team.

All those old guys will be gone some as early as this years deadline.
The plan is to acquire as many picks as possible and get younger.

If Jagr is open to be traded that gets you maybe a late 1st package that with your 2nd and move up is far as possible and hopefully draft another potential top six forward.

Just curious are Devils fans OK with Dylan strome

They're essentially the inverse Oilers; they're set on the back and, but have absolutely nothing up front.

On the bright side, it's a whole lot easier to turn over and upgrade the forward core than it is the D and goalie. In fact, they'd probably make great trading partners if either had the balls to move a young player.
