A thread for the ones that never made it.

Some names for you:

Dominic Turgeon - Thought he could be a middle 6 center for us, probably a career AHL guy

Axel Holmstrom - Thought we had a gem with this kid. What's crazy is his SHL season as a 18 year old might be the best season he ever had as a hockey player. Think he had some injuries, and he always had some heavy feet.

Louis Marc-Aubry - I thought he he could be a good depth player for us. Playing in Germany now, that's probably pretty sweet.

Julius Vahatalo - 6'5 forward who sounded/looked really interesting at Prospect Dev Camp. Never really came together.

Mike Mckee - Huge freakish athlete. Surprised he didn't get into UFC or something.

Marek Tvrdon - @The Zetterberg Era I'll pour one out for ya. Still playing back in his native Slovakia.

Lots of others I am sure we all tracked/had hopes for over the years.

Pretty crazy that 6/7 of our picks from the 2009 draft played NHL games, and we didn't have a 1st round pick. Everyone but @jaster 's boy Gleason Fournier.

the Wings drafted Gennady Stolyarov the same year as Franzen, he had a long KHL career that lasted until a couple years ago and is still playing in the Alps Hockey League

One of the recent ones for me was Albin Grewe. Hasn't done anything since being drafted. Looks like T-Rex is going extinct once again.
This is a good one. Draper loved him when they made the pick but he hasn’t done much since.

For some reason, one that always sticks in my mind is Nick Oslund. I remember an LGW poster raving about him around the time he was drafted.

Also, who can forget Brendan Smith? Hard to believe he’s still in the league.

I wonder what would’ve happened to Grigorenko had he not been in the car accident.

Metro Detroit
Filip Larsson, Jesper Eliasson

I think Larsson is going to pop back up in the NHL one day in his 30s, just seems like one of those guys.

Eliasson...

Vili Saarjiijarvi was a guy who was intriguing. Never played an NHL game.
Zach Nastasiuk was taken 10 spots ahead of Tyler Bertuzzi.
Max Nicastro seemed like he had some good qualities, went the college route and never made the NHL.
I remember Mitch Callahan getting his face destroyed in Grand Rapids. Played in 5 NHL games.

Aww. Bummer when that happens, and to someone you want to succeed.
Kinda hard to stay off the sauce when you're retired and have nothing to do especially since he has a family history of alcoholism.

Hate to say it, but it's probably gonna be an ongoing thing with him. Best of luck to him though, at least he made the first dozen games interesting.

Beat me to it...

Plugged his name into Google for curiosities sake and found:

-Charged with impaired driving causing death in 2010
-Lost his home to a fire in 2019

Good lord! Based on his penalty minute legacy I was assuming things were not that great but I have to say that is much sadder than I was prepared for.

I remember thinking Fabian Brunnstrom was going to be a thing because he had a good pre-season or camp or whatever it was…
