What does JT work on this summer?

Here's a couple articles about Johnny and 'what he's working on' this summer. Saw these on Lighthouse and thought I'd share. Training Camp can't come soon enough.

Tavares Won’t Rest Until He Becomes NHL’s Signature Star

The 22-year-old is a well-known “nice guy” off the ice, but he’s probably the last player any goalie wants to see hanging around the crease. Tavares transforms into a tornadic offensive force every time he laces up his skates.

Teammate Matt Moulson sees first-hand the kind of desire that Tavares brings to the ice every game.

“He’s always wants to be the best,” Moulson. “He works hard at trying to attain that goal. I don’t think he’ll stop pushing himself until he’s recognized as the best in the world.”

John Tavares leads the Islanders by example

"The things that people don't see on a day-to-day basis are the things that make him so successful," Islanders general manager Garth Snow said about Tavares' rigorous offseason training regimen.

Kyle Okposo, whose slow starts the past couple of seasons had become a maddening trend, came to Tavares toward the end of last season to pick his teammate's brain about training.

"It really started clicking with me that I needed to take that next step, and Johnny ups his game every year," Okposo said. "So we talked a lot about a bunch of different things, and I found someone to help me with some on-ice things the final month of the season. It's no coincidence that was when I had my best games."

And for a week last month, Okposo joined Tavares, along with Casey Cizikas and prospect Ryan Strome, working out at The Athlete Training Centre in Toronto, Tavares' offseason training home since he was the top prospect in juniors.

Hockey stars on Halifax ice

About 200 hockey fans got to watch Sidney Crosby, John Tavares and some more of the world’s elite players strut their stuff during some off-season training in Halifax midday Thursday.

I don't know of too many other players in the NHL that can completely change their style of play the way Crosby and now Tavares can. Both started out more as high end playmakers who put the work in to become elite goal scorers. That takes a ton of work and an elite understanding of the game. How many other players around the league can transform themselves like that and have both skillsets? Not many. Most high end players can be classified as an elite playmaker or elite goal scorer, you can count the number of players who can be both on one hand.
PW, the difference is that Crosby was more of an elite playmaker who could score, and Johnny was much more of a prodigious scorer who was also a top playmaker (junior record). Sid did improve his scoring ability once in the NHL (tied Richard Throphy 50 goal scored), while Johnny is now reverting back to his original root skill set as an elite scorer first after his first few years where he had it reversed.
Goal scoring is Johnny's "thing". He has talked about it, loves to score goals, but alos loves to win games. I expect we will see him continue to be a bigger and bigger finisher.

He needs to work on his skating, even it will never be great. It's the thing holding him back, all top notch players(Malkin, Ovi, Crosby) are fast.

Good stuff PW.

I love the fact that his teammates are going to him for help. If he turns Okposo around by him following his example he deserves the C on that alone. He definitely has the respect of his teammates.

His skating has already improved a very good amount. Anyone who watched his first season (well below avg skater) here and then watched him last year, you'd think that kind of improvement was almost impossible. I don't think I've seen that kind of leveling up in a few years like that. Besides speed and acceleration, he was much stronger on the puck and harder to check or get off his route.

I won't be surprised if he raises skating to the "great" level by the time he's 25.

btw, he's already "top notch"...

Agree that his speed/acceleration is better than average. His speed was never really an issue. While not a smooth, efficient stride, he had enough leg strength to get to where he was going. Over the last few years he has improved his stride to be more efficient, use less energy, increase top end, and get to full speed after two 2-3 steps. Starts and turns, edge work, lateral mmotion were improved also, but that is the area that needs continued work to progress to exceptional level.
OP may be right when he says JT will never be a "great skater" if he is thinking of great as elite. But his overall skating matched with his speed and strength could wind up being well above average to exceptional. Elite skaters that have it all are Malkin, Sid, Datsuyk, Giroux, Zetterberg. JT could approach Zetterberg level and be just below those others, and he will never stop working and training to get there.

^Agreed. His straight ahead acceleration to top speed is good, but his lateral agility still needs work (though improved). Combine better agility, stop/starts, tighter turning radius, with his natural strength on the puck and he will be VERY hard to contain.

I was in Mississauga a few weeks ago and stopped by JT's training centre. Was hoping to catch him in action.

Just FYI, THN came out with the top-50 NHL player rankings and JT comes in at #5. Oh yeah, they also pick us coming in at 5th in the Metro division which means we miss the playoffs.

Seriously, what's the with number 5 and the Isles?

I think a lot, if not all of the negative predictions have to do with Nabby and his playoff performance + age. If Nabby plays well, we'll be a playoff team. I have little doubt.

His opinion on Tavares is quite interesting. Thinks he'll be one of the centers with Crosby and Toews. Tavares was centering Stamkos and Couture in today's walkthrough BTW.

The best part was how he said Tavares could be the best player in the NHL next season. Yeah, he said it! :)

Also, NHL.com posted their top-200 fantasy rankings. What is it with the number 5? JT is ranked, you guessed it... #5.

how about learning how to pass the puck ???

or remembering there's 4 other guys out there besides himself?

He passes the puck a ton. Just because other players can't finish his plays doesn't mean he doesnt pass. In fact up until last season he was far too unselfish. Id rather he take a shot than anyone else on the Isles. Theres nothing wrong with scorers shooting.

We have the best chance to score when the puck is on JT's stick, and he knows that. The only thing he needs to work on this offseason is to say the word "obviously" less in interviews :handclap:

I've been saying JT news to play 2nd line center with crosby on 1st and toews on 3rd for like 2 years now

It's worth picking up despite the $10 pricetag. I know they are regional with their yearbooks, but it's so nice to see an article about an Islander in the Hockey News Yearbook, I don't remember the last time that's happened. The Hockey News Yearbook is always the most in depth yearbook produced. The NHL has their own, and usually The Sporting News produces one. The Hockey News one is always a huge notch above the other ones as far as sheer info. They even rate each teams top 10 prospects.

Shooters gotta shoot.

Plus, he's had more assists than goals in every season but last year.

I like it.

initiating contact, he is already a very physical player and i want to see more of this

idk why it says calahan hits jt, if you watch the video you will see that it is the opposite

I like when he gets physical, but I don't want to see him do it all the time where he'd become more of a target than he already is.

Man, our JT is getting a lot of notice this offseason. My only hope is he progresses, and doesn't go backwards in his developement. He needs to average more than a point a game (missed by a point the last 2 seasons), and improve his faceoffs and backchecking to progress. Though realistically, if experts are already putting him in their top 5, and already has been an MVP finalist, if he just keeps duplicating what he's done the last 2 seasons, we will all be very happy.

Anyone else think JT is going to have a monster season? I just think this is the year where he cements himself as a top 5 player in the world. He is going to be extra motivated because of the olympics. The Isles are improving, JT has enough experience now, and I think he will finally be consistent throughout the entire season because of his experience. I don't think he will go more than 3 games in a row without a point. I see him flirting with 100 points this year and winning a major award.

I think pretty much everyone is expecting a monster season from him. He's getting a lot of praise from the media. I just can't wait until he gets points 82 and 83 because I am so sick and tired of the 'he's never been a PPG player' argument against him.

Watch him go 40 goals 41 assists 81 points in 82 games played. That would drive us all nuts. :sarcasm:

Seriously, I am really close to giving you an Infraction for that! You're lucky we're boys Scotty. Seriously, that would drive me absolutely insane... to have to hear that for another year.
