No one mentioning that he will need to beat out other young guys, namely Celebrini and Wyatt Johnston. I don't see Team Canada taking too much youth. Both Celebrini and Johnston play exactly the way Team Canada brass like. I think it's an uphill battle for Bedard.

I’d take celebrini at this point over Bedard for the final forward spot if I had no choice and had to choose between one of them.

He needs to improve his skating. He lacks the top speed that other elite players at his size possess

I think he would have to be in the top 10 in league scoring next year. He would have to evolve into an offensive threat that is clearly a step above the others fighting for top 6 roles.

Being a center is a bonus. He’d take a role on the wing and be there in case the center got tossed out of the faceoff circle.

Last year he was 18 years old. Yes he’s raw. But that’s all the more reason to add him. He’s going to be a key player for Canada down the road, might as well groom him now.
He's 35.9% in the dot this season, 38.9% last.

I think some people will get enamoured with the youth & potential an overlook that at the moment he's basically a 60-70 point player who's terrible defensively. Will probably be better next season, but still has quite the gap to fill to make Team Canada in a best on best.

And speaking of which, while we haven't had best on best for a good while till the 4 Nations Canada tends to use the World Championship to groom players. Let Bedard & Celebrini and the like suit up in the Maple Leaf there this spring.

Play a game where his coach trusts him to be defensively sound and make safe plays with the puck. Long way to go to get there. And other guys are passing him, like Celebrini.

I think he’ll move over to wing soon enough. Playing in the NHL as a small centre is really tough. Off the top of my head, I can think of Point and Hughes who are centres similar in size to him, but both are much faster skaters than Bédard , among the fastest in the league.

He’s not going to be as tenacious as Hagel or Bennet. Not going to create much as Marner or score more than Reinhart. At this point , I don’t think he’s a bit down the pecking order- even if they don’t bring back Jarvis or Konecny , guys like Schiefele and Hyman would be ahead if him in the pecking order.

I pretty much agree with your post. I wouldn’t be too worried about him if I were a Chicago fan though. A 60-70 point center in his second season is nothing to shake a stick at, and it’s not entirely uncommon for young centers to not exactly have a stellar faceoff percentage as they grow into the NHL, especially if they have made the jump straight from junior hockey. Another opinion I hold is that while defense can be taught and learned while adjusting to the professional game, natural scoring talent is innate, and if you’re lucky to have it, it’ll get better over time as the player hones his craft and matures as a player.

What I would be concerned about if I were a Chicago fan is the environment he’s developing in. It’s one thing to be a 19 year old kid on a really bad team. It’s another thing if you’re “the guy” straight out of the gate like Bedard has had to be so far.

Certainly Bedard should move to wing. Even as a winger though will a coach trust Bedard wo play winning hockey? At the best level does Bedard know how to play winning hockey? He might need the Scotty Bowman talk.
