Not going to be easy to get him here but I really feel like we have a shot and now have the cap space to offer him a good deal

With the cap going down, and with the way these long term-big money UFA deals seem to NEVER work out...I'd be a little hesitant to give this guy 7 million per over a 5 year deal. Guy is definitely a capable 70-80 point player, but damn, I'm sure some crazy teams will offer him big cash.

Never work out? You mean LA didn't goto the Cup with Doughty's big contract and New Jersey didn't get to the Finals with Kovalchuk's big contract?

Well, I guess NEVER is a strong word. But you get the point I'm trying to get across. Big money UFA deals rarely seem to work out. It's risky, for sure. They work out for teams far less than the deals that end up being duds.

It's a major risk but it's the only way to get a certain kind of player without drafting them unless you already have one foot in the finals.

There's few players I'd take that risk with; I wouldn't with Getzlaf, but Perry is another story. One of the few guys skilled enough to get 50 goals in the league right now, also one of the biggest pests out there and somone who will contribute even when not scoring.

I think he's closer to a Kovalchuk than a Brad Richards in that he's still in the middle of his prime.

Well sure but it all depends on the GM and the team he's building. If a team is just going crazy with big contracts of course they sacrifice their depth and have issue. We're seeing that now with the Rangers, adding Nash and sacrificing Dubinsky, Anisimov and Prust has caused them considerable issues with scoring (or preventing scoring) when Nash isn't on the ice.

We already have Price at $6.5M and Galchenyuk will be probably making more when he hits 23. Subban playing at his best will make Markov money. That opens up someone else at forward to fill big money until then. I'd be all for overpaying Perry for five years.

If we can't get Perry, wait for 2014, Malkin, Letang, Vanek, Pominville, Heatley, Setoguchi, Marleau, Thorthon, Pavelski, Datsyuk, Both Sedins D. Brown, etc.

I know half of them won't even be on the market, but I'm a dreamer

We could trade for Heatley right now, it seems the Wild might consider the amesty buyout on his final year (7.5M)

I dont think the Wild would ask for much, it would be a salary dump.

I don't want that garbage player anywhere near our team.

He's the Vince Carter of the NHL. Demanding a trade when thing were finally turning around and putting HIMSELF before the team.

I hope he never wins a cup.

If some of you thought Cole was a high maintenance player Heatley is far worse.

Maybe it's just me, but as a "b" move, I would be willing to offer a two-way contract to Latendresse with interesting incentives he if plays with the team.

I would bet on the fact that a two-way contract is maybe what he needs to shake his a**, work hard and stay in shape. Then, if it works out, you find yourself with a huge body with nice hands. Moreover, if he had to play in the AHL for awhile, it would give Hamilton a much needed veteran presence with talent.

It would be a win-win move. But another team will probably offer him a one-way contract. I dunno.

I'd do Heatley vs Kaberle + 2nd pick. Then we will buy out Heatley this summer, or trade him if he performs very well with Habs.
Wild could save a few bucks now, and get a pick.

I like Tender, but I wouldn't even spend a contract space on him.

He went to California last week to see a neck/concussion specialist, add that to the back specialist last year....

I'm pretty sure the CBA doesn't allow a 2-way for a player who's been in the league that long/is that old.

That's why I suggested a 2-way contract. You do need veterans in Hamilton, veterans that can jump in the NHL if needed. Hamilton can't live only with rookies prospects -- we're seeing what's happening this year.

It is always good to fill some of the contract spaces on veteran in the AHL to help at developping prospects and help the NHL team when needed. Anyway, it is not true that all prospects under the 50 contract limits will play in the NHL. So forget the last 3 or 4 and sign veterans instead.

They don't work out if your plan is to build your team and structure it around free agents. But if your core and a strong team system are already in place, it makes more sense to go for the missing piece. Chara became a game changer for Boston for that very reason. He was their missing piece.

Perry could definitely be the missing piece for us. I don't see any other pressing need for many years ahead than a big elite right-handed scoring winger. We're in good shape at every other position. And considering Perry's only 27, you know he can grow with that team.

It's not going to be cheap though. I'm guesing 8M over 7Y is going to be the asking price.

in just 1 or 2 years, Habs won't have any true #1 d-man. Markov is getting old, is slowing down greatly, and I remain skeptical Subban will ever become a TRUE #1 d-man; he's too "volatile" for that.

Habs' d-men prospects are interesting or good, but not great. There is no #1 d-man coming up.

I feel dirty for saying this, but if Perry isn't an option, I think Horton should be. I hate him right now, and he's not nearly as much of a tough guy away from the Bruins, but he brings both strength and skill and is good for at least 20 goals a year.

Well I respectfully disagree about Subban. I think he's still far from over in his progression. I also think he's shown flashes of being a future 2-way big minute eater. I still have great faith in this guy.

You trade Eller, pick plus prospect for O'Reilly, then you have a wonderful line of:

Galchenyuk O'Reilly Perry

Pacioretty Desharnais Gallagher
Bourque Plekanec Gionta
Blunden White Prust

Oh yeah, you trade Moen for a pick for cap relief

Boston finished with 74 points the year before they signed Chara. He wasn't added to be the missing piece he was added so that they could build around him.
