I think even if he expects to be competitive next year you can still make an argument that it's better to send this years pick. The ammunition you get to make a move at the deadline next year is probably more valuable to the team in the short term (next years run) then a player taken 11th in this years draft.I know this is the "duh" answer but it really depends on what Drury plans to do. If he's going to try and move out Kreider, Panarin, Zibanejad, Miller, etc. (some combination) and get younger, then it's probably best to punt on this year and pick next year.
But, if he's planning on an on the fly retooling, then I'd be content with picking this year.
I still don't know why some of you are so convinced he's gone in a year or two. I think unless the team falls flat on its face the way it did this year, he'll be around for at least a few more years.
For me, I have no pick preference beyond this. I mean next year's draft looks better, but it's highly conditional on what I said before.
Also having the pick next year hedges your downside. If he does an an on the fly retooling, he should know that there is no guarantee that it will work. Attempting the retool, having it blow up in your face, then having to send a top 10 pick to Pittsburgh in a strong draft would be a total disaster.
