Which is all well and fine, but if we were going to sign guys to fill holes for one or two years, why not just extend Perron for a year or two, and/or not trade Fabbri? It'd have had the same effect, without breaking chemistry.

Steve obviously thought he was signing upgrades on those guys, which in my eyes means Steve thought we'd at least contend this year.

I don't think it's obvious that Yzerman thought he was signing upgrades.

Perron got a 2-year deal with Ottawa. Yzerman may not have wanted to give more than one, which I can't blame him for. I like Perron's puck-battling skills and leadership but there's not a lot else there and he's only gonna get slower. Ghost got 3 years with Carolina, which I would not want him around for that long.

I always liked Fabbri but don't know that we miss him either.

I guess it depends on what you mean by contend. Contend for a playoff spot? Sure maybe. With some of the kids coming in and based on last year I think that's reasonable.

Contend for anything more than being 1st round fodder? I don't think so.

I know its going to suck but if we punt this season, sell at the deadline and have another strong draft we might be set up better in 3-4 years...
I like to trade for something Chiarot, Rasmussen, Kane and Tarasenko and replace them with Lombardi, Mazur and Soderblom .
Cat Larkin Raymond
Lombardi Kasper Mazur
Soderblom Compher Berggren
Motte Fischer Veleno
Ed Seider

Bring ASP , Danielson and MBN next season. Bring solid #3 defenseman next summer, bring new coach and I don't think we wait for 3-4 years, we could be good next season.

I didn't want to say it but I would flip him for like a Logan Cooley tier player plus picks.
No way , Larkin is just like Raymond or Seider, untouchable, without him team will be suck for next 5 or so years

My point still stands. If Steve was already considering this 2024/2025 season another rebuild year, why bother signing aging free agents? Why not just re-sign the guys we had (Ghost excluded) for a year or two? Could've thrown Perron in the press box when his legs really fell off. Hell, even Sprong got league minimum for one year.

And then was immediately traded away for nothing.

My brother in Christ, we're 5 years into Yzermans rebuild, 8 years into the rebuild altogether. 25 years of playoffs started well before I was born. I get "have patience", but why give deals to Kane and Tank and Gus when we had dudes waiting to fill those spots in the lineup?

Sounds more like Steve had higher expectations for where we should be. And in that case, why not make a coaching change?
I would have had upgrading the blueline way higher on the priority list than signing Kane or Tarasenko. So I feel you there.

My guess is they opted for Tarasenko and Kane because they wanted to come here and some of the defenseman that were available did not. At least I can only hope that was the case.

I don't know what Yzerman's expectations were for this season. If they had high expectations for the team this year I would have thought they would done more this off season than what we got. In particular the lack of urgency around upgrading the blue line. To me that gives me the impression this season did not have that high of expectations.

really, it should be noted that of the UFA we let walk Ghost is the only one doing well. For as bad as Tank has been I think he's arguably been better than Perron, Fabbri, and Sprong. I know that doesn't mean we had to sign Tank at all, but the guys we let go have pretty clearly not taken off elsewhere, either.

Add Fabbri to the list also.

Just noticed he's injured. Guy has zero luck.

The injuries have been the knock on him going back to his draft year, haven't they?

I seem to recall there being a huge argument on this board for a couple years after he was drafted because people wanted him, but the guy just hasn't been able to stay consistently healthy even going back to his days in the OHL.
