If you wave bye-bye to Uncle Fester ....

You promote from within to finish season? If so isn't that just keeping things at status quo?

Go after ....?
Choices are limited .... Q?, Boudreau?

Might be best to hope SY has a nasty heart to heart with Fester and sets his arse on fire ....

Laldone lost the team, so a nasty heart to heart is useless. Promoting within? Nope. That's more of the same. Maybe Draper can coach and get him out of the scouting role.

The roster isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I firmly believe with the right coach we have a top 15 d. Maybe top 20. I was a big advocate of keeping Lalonde as the team got better last year and just missed the playoffs.

However as we've seen, the team crumbles under pressure, there's no system just dump and hope hockey. Whenever they have a 1-2 goal lead they just turtle and look lost and lose the lead.

Lalondes post game pressers can be summed up to basically we had some good looks and bad luck it's a long season trust the process.

We need a coach that will light a fire under these guys. Were already a quarter way through the season. Unless we're tanking for one more pick it's time to make the change.

I don't think Boughner would try to use Lalonde's system or be more of the same. Boogie would make a lot of sense if we promote from within for an interim coach before picking a guy over the summer.

watching locked on red wings here (best DRW podcast i think) n made interesting point. Roster construction aint match Lalonda's "system"

That's on the coach, too, imo. You know the group you have, you have to play to that.

But on that point he might have been doing that the first ten games where we collapsed down, limited chances while hemorrhaging shots, and leaned on winning as low event games as possible. We've seen them open up since then, and it hasn't gotten better. :laugh:

Yeah, Fester has lost the locker room. He's done. Question now is....

- Do we go with interim coach, Boughner and see who becomes available during the season/after the season and hire the new guy after the season.

Or

- Do we risk it and sign Todd McLellan now, whos gonna want this season + 3 years contract and not wait who else gets available.
---------------
I would hate to give up at this point of the season, giving up now would be that loser mentality what we been trying to avoid. McLellan also is not the coach whom i would want, the other Todd, Todd Nelson is who i would hire but we would have to wait until offseason to get him. But McLellan might have one good project left in him. I just hope Wings stay away from Q/Hartley/BruceB/ClaudeJulien-types.

The pickings are always slim mid-season. I do think, however, that you need to look outside of the organization if you want to truly shake up the vibe in the locker room.

I don't think he sucks, but the style of play he's preaching doesn't mesh with what the players are good at. It's just not working. They should get a different voice ASAP. Somebody with more of an aggressive style.

Like i see people ask questions on reddit like, "Where are we going to get a better coach? We should just keep him if we can't upgrade." But coaches are rarely about getting an objective talent upgrade. It's more about getting someone with a different approach and different strengths that fit your player group better.
This. Lalonde is not Scotty Bowman, therefore he doesn't have the ability to successfully change players' strengths and styles.

This. Leave him in a TSA interrogation room.
Kill two or even three birds with one stone and have Lalonde tell TSA that Gustafsson and Petry hid the drugs and bombs in their asses.

The power-play is better without Gostisbehere and he was as flawed 5-on-5 as other defencemen at current team.

Penalty kill sucks, and any of the guys gone weren't part of it at last season.
Keep telling yourself that, there's no way you actually believe it even if you can pull a % number up. There isn't a defender on this team replacing his play/production.

Just so we're clear it's 3 players carrying the PP. Raymond/Larkin/Debrincat and Idk if you can count on their outstanding Power play production to continue on a league low 50(ish) power play attempts. Between those three players you'd got 26 points in 50 attempts. I HIGHLY doubt that continues because it'd be historic type power play production.

As much as I want a coaching change, until the team falls further from the playoff race, it may not happen.

9 teams are 500 or worse in the east and one of them is getting a playoff spot. Yes the Wings are tied for the bottom, but one good week and you can be in the playoffs.

I don't see it happening. No team that consistently ices a Petry Chiarot pair is going to make the playoffs.

How many of you were expecting this team to be as good or better than last years team?

Personally, when I look at the roster, it was pretty clear to me that we should all be expecting to see a step back.

With that in mind, I find it hard to pin this on the coach. Would a change help? Maybe, but the off-season roster turnover was mostly downgrades across the board.

Ghost -> Gustavsson
Perron -> tarasenko
Sprong -> berggren
Fabbri -> Kasper
Walman -> Holl

Some of these are good long term moves (kasper) but otherwise this team is just worse and I’m not sure Lalonde should be the one to pay the price for that.

Quenneville please.

I wonder if the parents whose kid was sexually assaulted by Aldrich after he left the Blackhawks are Red Wings fans?

I wonder if that poor young man is a Wings fan?

You have to wonder if Aldrich used his day with the Stanley Cup to groom more young men. Pointing to where his name was engraved on it as a member of the Blackhawks coaching staff.

It’s probably not a coincidence that his company had an intern program with a local college that sent him young men that he would supervise and weigh in on their grades.

I wonder if he proudly displays those glowing employee reviews by Quenneville?

Quenneville can eat shit.

I am under the belief that the locker room mega sucks, but Lalonde also mega sucks. Firing Lalonde wont fix everything but its a start. The Wings look like they're having less fun then any team ever so one can hope that the team gets a little more lively when the prospects start coming up over the next 2 years.

I thought this was a good read with some interesting insights. Particularly about the dressing room being a quiet group.
I mentioned this last year when we were discussing keeping Perron. I fully believe that he had a lot to do with that run we had last year to charge for that playoff spot. There was a quote from Lalonde where he basically said "Perron said we were going to get 18 points in Jan and I was like there is no way."

The fact that Lalonde provides neither energy nor sound tactical deployment & structure means he should be gone.

I disagree with the article that just sitting here and waiting it out with Lalonde for a tank season is a good option. It's not good for the young players we have on the team. They have no system, no motivation, and lousy deployment. Even if we have a fall back year we still need someone who is going to put Seider, Ed, Ray, Kasper, Aljo in the best position to grow as players. All they are learning and practicing right now is how to play losing hockey, and that's how you become the Edm Oilers pre McDavid or the Buffalo Sabres.

How many times have we seen teams turn it around mid season after having another coach come in. Even interim coaches often work. If we promote Bough there is nothing to say we couldn't find a more lively assistant coach to bring in for the rest of the year to help in that area.

Also quiet with accountability can be effective, but every time I hear Lalonde talk it sounds like he is making excuse after excuse. From my understanding Yzerman wasn't a super vocal leader either but he is still widely regarded as one of the best captains to ever play in the NHL.

I thought a regression was very possible this season. A lot of unlikely comeback wins last season, a lot of unsustainable production from a mediocre D, too many defensive issues and not enough appropriate new help added. But this is a collapse, not a regression, despite less roster turnover than last year. When you get solid veteran character types like Copp and Compher making negative public comments or simply not putting in enough effort on a backcheck like last night, it's just another sign of a huge problem in the coach-player dynamic, if more evidence was even needed.

SY had this problem in TB, missing the playoffs two years in a row after reaching Game 7 of the Conference final, and fired Boucher 31 games into the second of those two seasons. There were only 17 games left that year and he was replaced by interim co-head coaches who didn't have any solutions either. It might be tempting to go the same route this season, interim replacement(s) and take what comes out of it. The way they've drafted in the first round, a higher Draft pick than expected could be interesting. NJ lucked into Jack Hughes by dropping 25 points from the previous year.

Shap shots hockey? And who are they again? Lalonde will not be fired. Firing him puts Yzerman under more scrutiny. The real issue is this roster is so terribly constructed and I don't even like Lalonde. I was saying Blashill was better than him from the beginning and you guys thought I was nuts. They are basically the same caliber of coach...
