What do you expect from the Habs after the break?

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
I expect them to play better after the rest. I think they'll go around .500 rest of way. Probably around where they are now, .491. We'll finish around 78-81 pts.

That'll leave us with the 8th or 9th pick. I'd prefer we finish at least top 7.

(Schaefer, Misa, Martone, Hagens, Desnoyers, Frondell or Eklund).

We're too far back now with too few games left to make playoffs. It's time to set things up for next season. Mailloux & Beck should be given long looks. I'd also give Trudeau, Engstrom & Davidson some games.

Everything comes down to how our goaltending performs.
Montembault already has 2 more wins than last season but he also has 6 more losses.
Our backups gave us 14 wins last season and we currently have 7.
So while it seems we should easily find 5 more wins to match last season's win total we then have to account for the 16 OT points we pulled. We are still 11 points away there. So any combination of 10-15-1 lands us where we were last season.

Jeeze, with Guhle out and half a dozen games away from shipping out many players, including Evans, Armia, Savard and whoever else? We won't have our PK guys anymore.

I rather think we'll be at least around bottom 5-7.

Also, I noticed an error. You said they'll play ,500 and finish with 68-70 points? ,500 would bring them to 81 points.

They'd definitely be bottom 5 if they finish with 68-70 .

In Win+/-, we are +4 over bottom 4th and 5th (Buffalo & Seattle, both are -5). Catching them is very doable. All the other teams in between are -1 away, so we could easily fall behind them and finish 6th last. We are -1, St-Louis is -1, Pitts -2, Flyers -2.

Yeah, you're right, I f***ed up the math. We'll be around 78-81 pts.

I don't see us trading Dvorak or Armia. I'm not sure that we trade Savard.

PK will be OK with Dvo, Armia, Suzuki, Anderson, upfront & Savard on D. If we do trade Savard then the pk might suffer as I don't find either Xhekaj or Carrier to be strong on the pk down low. Xhekaj isn't active enough with his stick & Carrier is too small.

It's good opportunity to see Heineman & Beck on the pk, too.

I think we stay 7-10 draft wise. I would prefer 7th.

I expect Anaheim to pass us & St. Louis, but that's about it. That would put us 8th.

I don't see Philadelphia or Pittsburgh doing much. I hope Buffalo goes on a late season run so they pass us. We need one more team to do it.

if the habs start selling for the trade deadline then the best is to tank. only try to win or give a good show for the fans at the bell centre. loose all the away games. Hughes should sell what he can for best offers and give some of the rocket kids some nhl games. setup for the draft and also the ufa market. sell Lanie or buy him out in july, clearly he is now too slow for this team he is down to the PP only player. as far as Dach is, sign him for 3mil max and 3 years max move him to 3rd line wing, thats it. if he wont accept then trade him

What are Habs chances for playoffs using steiner math?
I think it will be hard for us to overcome the Guhle loss. If Heineman is back that will help.

Though I think these lines could be better than what we've had:

Caufield - Suzuki - Laine
Newhook - Dach - Anderson
Slaf- Evans - Armia
Gallagher - Dvo - Beck

Hutson - Matheson
Struble - Carrier
Xhekaj - Savard

What I'm most looking forward to after the break:
1. seeing how Laine does with Suzuki and Caufield (come on Marty, I know it takes you a while sometimes to get there, but it's time to get there).
2. Seeing what we get for Evans, Armia, and Savard, (and Matheson?)
3. Seeing the young guys like Beck, Heineman, Mailloux, and Reinbacher and Kapanen when his season ends?
4. Following the Laval Rocket

Yes because most players need the reps to get back to game shape

...especially Dach...

The recharge should help them and even if we trade away some guys, I expect them to be .500 team, so they finish with 81 pts.
Mailloux, Beck, Davidson should play with Habs.

Don't expect any call ups before the 24th when we are at home against NJD. A banged up Rocket team is currently playing their busiest segment of games this season ending Saturday.

If, for example, Evans and Armia have already been traded, what would the lineup look like without any call-ups before the 24th at home against NJ, which isn't even on the schedule!?

Next Habs games are the 22nd against OTT, the 25th against CAR and the 27th against SJ.

If Montreal doesn't make any call-ups, ideally, Heineman would be healthy again. Otherwise, it gets complicated and, by complicated, I mean Pezzetta is in the lineup, amongst other things.

Caufield - Suzuki - Laine
Slafkovsky - Dach - Heineman/Anderson
Anderson/Heineman - Newhook - Gallagher
Pezzetta - Dvorak - XXX

We'd still be down a winger without any call-ups and we'd have that horrible Pezzetta in the lineup.

Basically, we're down two players, even if Heineman is healthy.

If Evans and Armia have been traded, Montreal will have to call up players.

another top 10 pick
Better 8th than 9th, better 7th than 8th, better 6th than 7th and so on. 9th or 10th, IMO, doesn't make much of a difference.

Generally, we should not care about AHL regular season games. We need to find out whether Beck, Mailloux could play at NHL level. Davidson deserves it and it would send a great message to the organization that hard work matters. Laval has wide roster, so they would cope with that.
They would be back for AHL playoffs anyways.

I agree. Much depends on who is ready to go on Saturday or if anyone gets moved. If nothing changes I still expect them to wait for me bringing Kids up on no rest is DUMB.

I expect we will be playing sub .500 hockey to close out the year, in spite of having one of the easier schedules. We will land in the 6-10th last range by the end of the year. We'll see at least a couple of Dvorak, Evans, Savard and Armia traded, which will aid our fall.

I'm hoping Beck and Mailloux get some good playing time and show progress for more optimism going into next season.

Dach actually did play his best hockey of the season after the Christmas break when I expected him to get fat AF

Maybe he will surprise again. Slaf and Xhekaj on the other hand have been drunk on the beach for the past week so those guys will need some extra time.

...hopefully Jackeye is a happy drunk...cuz an Angry Drunken Jackeye would be terrifying... :biglaugh:
