Europe and the US are not perfect. Far from it. There were some Swedish (where Im from ) kings in the 17-18th century that maybe acted somewhat similar to what Russia is doing today. They invided places in Europe with armies to make Sweden larger. Yet that was 3-400 years ago. This is year 2023, its not modern, it is out of date and CRINGE to conduct a slow meat grinder war (with incredible suffering) like this in the modern world now. Its like the Russian leadership is completely *censored word* and most of the people i Russia seem to follow like a herd blindfolded dumb (are you really this stupid in general?) sheep.

Not really. Russia resembles the US in many ways, particularly the equivalent of "american exceptionalism". On the other side there is a large discontent especially with younger generations, but there is no history of protest to any large degree. That's the major difference.

Hasek is probably still upset that Russia sent 200,000 troops to invade his country when he was kid, squashing any independent reform or thought.

Oh, and he is probably still mad about not being allowed to play in the NHL until 8 years after he was drafted, thanks to Russia.

Some people just can't let things go I guess.

"whataboutism" is a buzzword to use when you can't justify your own hypocrisy.
I don't know about that. Look, you can rightly complain about American imperialism (which is different in nature from pre-WWII European imperialism). Complaining about middle adventurism from the pov of Russia is more than a little amusing. But the context, and purpose of what Russia is doing right now is a totally different frame, much more similar to pre-WWI, and what you say makes absolutely zero contact with anything a Czech should think, given their history.

All of this is beside the point. The NHL is doing what it is doing because the league represents the owners, and having the best talent in the world is best for those owners. I am not comfortable with the idea that people shouldn't criticize the ultra-wealthy for a total lack of concern for justice. But probably the best way to address this isn't to write letters, but to make these out of touch rich guys actually pay fair taxes for their growing equity, so they don't become oligarchs.

Well that's what this is all about. Europe is looking out for its own interest here. None of this really has anything to do with innate ethics. Never does. Anybody claiming as such is just virture signalling with blinders on. In reality the amount dark people being slaughtered engulfs anything occuring in Ukraine, but I suppose this is just defined as 'adventurism'. That said, it doesn't absolve Russia by any means,

But yes that's besides the point. The NHL is able to do what it does because, unlike in Europe, the masses in North America don't give a shit about Ukraine, generally speaking. The NHL caters to the wants and wishes of its clientele.

The war might be over by now if the NHL did the right thing and didn’t allow Russian athletes to play unless they gave up their citizenship or something. It’s honestly shocking they are allow d to go back in the summer and still compete.

Things can be complex, and still relate to morality. You are, in fact, speaking to a person whose ancesters were the survivors of a century worth of pogroms following the dissolution of the P-L Commonwealth. A lot of Americans, not just my people, can say the same in one way or another. But I doubt you'll care about any of that.

The "masses" in the US may not care much about the Ukraine. I guess an estimated 700 million Europeans along with Hasek, genuinely detests Russia and Russians now though! Not since the ww2 has there been a "conflict" that is this easy for someone whit atleast an average brain (someone that understands that usually all isnt black and white, there are two sides to every story) to recognize who is overwhelmingly BAD and evil (Russia) and who is overwhelmingly innocent and beeing attacked (The Ukraine) .

I want to ask the Czech posters, @Czechboy and others, do you support this extreme hatred towards Russian athletes by Hasek who was fine with Russia in 2010 when he was paid substantially? I don’t see Jagr going this route.
This thread did get reported and will be closed. I am sorry for that. It had been a nice stretch of no politics around here and only hockey talk. My dilemma is that I get labelled a Rusophobe if I close it (after it's been reported) or anti ukraine/pro Russia if I let it go. I get yelled at no matter what.lol And probably a coward if I don't reply.haha

I get it is a great topic for discussion and a lot of posters have some very strong views on this.

In a way, this forum is great because you can write in English with Americans/Canadians/Russians/Czechs/Finns/Swedes/Slovaks/etc.

Problem is that it's a hockey forum and not a political one at all. This topic can only lead to more reports as it isn't really about hockey. Eg. I grabbed my coffee and was on here to see if any rosters had been updated for the upcoming weekend of international tournaments and to read more Filip Zadina hate on the main boards (stupid kid can't skate or shoot, why would anyone draft him?lol).

Instead, I find myself reading about the Gulf War, Putin, Stalin, Trump, Biden, War Crimes, Eritrea, Syria, Carpetbombs, Rape, Torture, killing of children and war crimes committed by all governments.

I gotta say, I'd prefer to read about how Zadina can't skate and belongs in the Italian Second Division of hockey.lol

I think Hasek has an extreme hate towards Russian politics, not Russian people or their athletes. I think Jagr would feel the same way (he does wear 68 for a reason you know). One is screaming from the rooftops (Hasek) and one is running charity fundraisers for Ukraine (Jagr).
