Would have prefered Michkov @5, still Reinbacher projects very good.
Hoped for Keller in the goalies focus, really happy for Fowler.
Slight overpay for Newhook with upside to the trade
Disappointed at the direction, but bveragers are cyclable faster than other picks

Every bad has its good counterpart and vice et versa

I think you must also add what you think of Alex Newhook into the equation since we took him in place of #31 and #37. I hope everyone is doing that.

I don't know enough about David, I actually know zero but what makes you so sure he's a bonafide future #1 pairing D?

On many draft projections in the media they have him as a top 4. This is from people who have a history evaluating talent.

Of course, those lists are merely projections, they are never 100% right but I've seen more say he's a top 4 than he's a 'bonafide top 2'.

I am hopeful though. We'll see how he turns out but I'm just not sure where you got that opinion is all.
Watched some clips, read some reviews, inferred based on the fact that our scouting department is using what (I hope they expect) should be our last lottery pick for some time on a défense-first defenseman- they’re not going to waste it on a guy you can probably pick up in free agency in a few years. Plus, Arizona wanted him bad too. It’s not like we picked a guy slated to go #20.

The bolded (not directed at you specifically) is why I take a lot of the fan talk about him with a grain of salt- how exactly does someone project a player as a top 4 Vs a top 2? “Based on X clip, I think he plays 22 minutes a game against the middle six instead of 28 minutes against the top 6”? How can someone split such hairs on an 18 year old defensive defenceman? We have to remember that his skill set isn’t your typical skill set for a young player capable of playing in a men’s league- he’s not a high flying offensive player with natural ability to score against weaker players, he reads to me as a guy with a pretty rounded game and smart IQ, usually things you pick up with age, so the fact he’s already where he’s at at this age speaks volumes to me. I just think you don’t pick guys like this in the first round if you think he’s going to max out as an average player.

Basically tl;dr I trust our front office to have evaluated this guy’s experience and skill set and my eye test tells me his game matches his draft position, and I’m willing to give our FO the benefit of the doubt that they know exactly what they’re doing instead of all these fans who have decided they know exactly where this player they weren’t even following two days ago will end up in his career. And of course, if I’m wrong, I’ll be proven wrong years from now, and will be very happy to eat crow if that’s the case, but from all I’ve seen read and watched, think he can be our #1 down the line.

Gulyayev, Cristall, Hrabal

Although I don't know much this is just from hearing others.

.

Of these choices, I'd say the players most likely to make us deeply regret the Newhook deal are Gulyayev, Christal or one of the goalies.
Those are the most popular names thrown around pre-draft, agreed.
Will be interesting to see how things unfold in next few years.

Voted B... would've gone A- is that was an option.

the profiles on a lot of the later picks are quite positive and suggest good late round fishing for NHL potential.

This draft will be decided by Bach though... if he cements himself as the best D from the draft class and at the least becomes a top-4 fixture, it's a good draft, but if Michkov becomes that generational NHL talent he seems to have the potential to be, anything short of stud top-pairing outcome from Bach, or one of the later picks turning into a Brayden Point/Hellebuyck late round elite surprise, and this draft will sit as a big X on Hughes resume.

Honeymoon is over?

Did not improve one bit,

Team is treading water,

We replaced Drouin with Newhook,

And Reinbacher might fill half the big void left by Petry,

improvement = ZERO

Ottawa, Buffalo, and Detroit are all improving, and we are staying put

Also Dvo's NTC kicks in tomorrow (not that I think he will have a problem with wanting to go elsewhere)
Perhaps Winnipeg?

I was certain Dvorak was going to be traded at the draft when they acquired Newhook. Perhaps used in an attempt to get a selection in the second round? I'm a bit surprised he's still a Hab.

I just love the narrative that Michkov is a sure-fire generational talent, and that Reinbacher is nothing but a top 4 defenseman. It's like the need to be right is so important that the absolute best ceiling is seen for one's choice, and the floor is looked at for the other's choice.

You could be right, or the Habs could be right. Saying why you wanted a player instead of the other, and debating it is fine. But making a definitive judgement on a player's career without them ever playing an NHL game, and without any recognition that things could turn out differently than your opinion, is just stupid. People calling a whole professional scouting team "clowns" because they didn't pick their guy... I don't know what to say without being as equally insulting...

It's even funnier to see the "we are doomed! This franchise was just set back for a decade" posts.

You know, there's this thing called Development. I swear it exists.

Reinbacher will be good, Fowler has a shot. I'm not happy with the draft class overall.

Time will tell. I'm cheering for them.

For me, it is the inability of HuGo to get rid of one or two of Hoffman, Armia, Dvorak, Gally, Edmundson that strikes me the most. I know cap space is still a huge problem.

Reinbacher gonna be a top three-four, and Fowler gonna play someday at NHL level. I've got minimal hope for the rest. I hope Mesar will turn the corner next year at OHL level and Beck gonna improve his offensive stats too. Looking forward to see Roy at AHL level.

No one wants those players. Taylor Hall just got traded for free. And he's a much better player. It cost Edmonton Kostin to dump Yamamoto.

No one wants underpeforming players with signigicant cap hits.

That means we have to get more scoring
This team up to now aside from Cole is pretty
Poor at putting the puck in the net- 7th worst in the league

They clearly feel that the offensive attributes of Roy and Farrell, along with the games of Beck and others allowed them to make this move. There are young players in the system that will be able to slide into forward roles.

Aside from Mailloux, we have no one that could slide in and replace Eddy or Savard's minutes. They feel Reinbacher can do that AND be a Dahlin level player. If they're right, I'm more than fine with the pick.

You can't score goals if you can't get it out of your end. Reinbacher is the kind of guy that can do that multiple ways and knows what to do once it's out.
