What are your D Pairings for This Team

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. I don't know enough about our new signings, looks like we've got options.

McCabe - Brodie
Gio - Liljegren
Rielly - Holl

Hopefully McCabe - Brodie can reproduce some of that dominant shut down D that Muzin and Brodie provided last year.
I'd much rather have Gio - Liljegren as my 3rd pairing, but I think I'd rather shelter
Rielly's minutes since he's looked unstable lately. I think Gustafson could replace Rielly, but we won't be sitting our expensive defenseman. Nobody wants Holl, but he's solid on PK and I'm not sure Schenn is any more reliable.

My other choice now would be:

Rielly - Brodie
Gustafson - McCabe
Gio - Liljegren

Don't think the 7 D works but we obviously have options.

Who you all got?

For me

Rielly-Brodie
Gio-Lily
McCabe-Schenn
McCabe Schenn is a bit redundant, not sure i love the ice time for Schenn, but I’d swap Brodie and Schenn with your pairings. Brodie McCabe could be a good stay at home shut down pairing too.

I missed the game yesterday. Can someone please tell me what the defensive pairs were yesterday and how they looked?

McCabe - Brodie
Reilly - Schenn
Giordano - Liljegren

OR

Rielly - Brodie
McCabe - Liljegren
Giordano - Holl

Not a fan of this 11F-7D configuration. Also not a fan of Gus.

The fact is, Rielly needs to be carried by Brodie or he's a liability out there

McCabe-Holl
Holl is at his most useful when he's in a shutdown role with a strong partner who can carry him a bit

Giordano-Liljegren
Two good guys
So we need to burn our best shutdown D to babysit our alleged #1D?

That seems like a big big problem.

McCabe - Brodie - every contender needs that reliable shutdown pair that you can throw into the defensively tight situations.

Giordano - Liljegren - Absolutely no reason to separate this pairing, it's been effective since the day it's been put together.

Rielly - Holl - Rielly is our #1D and Holl has been part of serveral functioning shutdown pairings. Make these 2 figure it out. If Giordano, Muzzin or Brodie can pair up with Holl and make a functionally good pairing, then Rielly can too. I am not seperating one of the above effective pairings just to cater to our alleged #1D.

Limit Reilly's ice with Schenn as a babysitter, Reilly third pair minutes plus PP. Fire Holl into the sun.

McCabe- Brodie
Gio- Lilly
Reilly- Schenn

Rielly-Brodie
McCabe-Holl/Liljegren
Giordano/Gustafsson-Liljegren/Schenn

Gustafsson spells Giordano at times/when needed; Holl/Liljegren/Schenn are in somewhat of a rotation to avoid being the healthy scratch (Holl likely plays the most often among the three).

I think I prefer Rielly to be with someone mobile enough to make up for his mistakes, that can also move the puck well. I don't see Schenn being that guy. That's why I think I like the OPs lines better with Brodie being Rielly's partner.

Have McCabe and Schenn be your shutdown pair. McCabe isn't going to take many risks or leave Schenn stranded and he moves the puck fairly well.

Could work.

At this point I would just shelter Rielly hard. Keep him to offensive zone draws, power play and lower competition. Let the other two pairs do the heavy lifting.

Giordano-Holl

Rielly gets jettisoned to LW and power play specialist on D. Aston-Reese gets to watch from the stands. When O'Reilly back, Kerfoot back to 4th line LW where he belongs. (LW: Bunting, Tavares, Rielly, Kerfoot)

The main reason why you do this with Rielly is to get his head around that he is no longer useful here and prepare him to waive his NMC in the summer. Even if there are injuries to our D, you keep Rielly in his LW cage.
