Why they're not doing as well in the standings is obvious, very low PDO. But turning possession around with almost the same roster is crazy to me. Last game that first period was shocking because of just how rarely we get outshot by a significant margin even in a period. Is it Trocheck vs. Strome? The kids improving?

Kids are a bit better, and the team is one year familiar with the system.

They’re not scoring because they’re stopping short of 100% effort. Too much perimeter play. Not fighting for space in the high danger areas. Last year the effort was clear—new coaching staff, new mandate, everyone was motivated. It’s going to be the challenge of the coaching staff to keep them focused on regular season games, and not look ahead to the playoffs too early.

I'm pretty sure we're ranked higher in HDCF % and GF % this year.

I know it's an easy narrative, but the perimeter play thing just isn't true. This is the Rangers this year:

This was them last year at 5v5

I hope all these expected goals we're banking can help us get some wins.....is that how this works? We just cash them in later?
Yes, but we have to let them vest first. I am not sure how long the vesting process is, but based on our luck so far, Ill say 8 months.

A few things:

-A healthy Kakko is a massive upgrade on Hunt/Vatrano. Vatrano low-key sucks and we had a huge RW hole the entire year.
-At least now it's Goodrow and Vesey stepping up. They're passable and can at least play defense.
-Lafreniere-Chytil-Gauthier was one of the worst offensive lines since the lockout and we stuck with them for a frightening amount of minutes. I like all three guys but it just did not work as a line.
-Panarin still does most of his work on the PP but he's been fine at even strength. Last year, he was a legit 4th liner at even strength.
-I like Ryan Strome as a player but he sucks ass at defense and Trocheck doesn't.
-The third pair is still struggling but at least it's an NHL third pair. It was an AHL second pair last year.
-Reaves is playing slightly fewer games and slightly fewer minutes. He singlehandedly bombs an entire line. "Machinehead it's 9 minutes!!" It's a tight league. You can't afford 9 minutes a game of the other team playing on Beginner.

Kakko, Chytil are better and Trocheck plays a better two way game than Strome.

Why the goals for/against differ from the shot based proxy stats, Panarin and Trouba are bleeding goals against while not being on the ice for enough goals for. -7 and -6 respectively in even strength goals for /goals against when they have been on the ice, two worst ratios on the team.

Vatrano just had a great shot. But I agree Kakko is a huge upgrade in literally every other aspect of the game.

That became annoying because he'd do nothing and then beat a goalie clean from outer space and it's like "oh he has to play now."

Nothing is more dangerous than bad players who do very noticeable stuff to stick around.

Trocheck is a possession player he did a lot of that for the hurricanes and chytil is a monster when it comes to driving possession Those are the two big ones.

It's a good question and something I've been trying to figure out as well. I think one thing that has improved dramatically is their puck retrievals, keeping plays alive or getting to them and moving them out of the defensive zone. The most noticeable difference is that they really haven't been hemmed in their zone too often on certain shifts where they just have to withstand a flurry of shots, which was commonplace before this year.

They also have more of a shooting mentality in the offensive zone. Part of that is I think they are playing a more simplified version of offense in some respects, settling for point shots and looking for loose pucks around the crease or deflections. Along with winning puck battles for often you are going to maintain long shifts in the offensive zone.

The question is do his goals make up for his poor play otherwise? He's like anti-Kakko.
