It's something I've always wondered but could never find the answer to.

I mean we will see teams trade picks that are 2,3, 4 drafts away sometimes is there a limit?

You'd never see it but if for example the Leafs and Oilers decided to swap 1st round picks in 2046 tomorrow would they be allowed?

I don't think there is technically any rule against it.

Without checking, I believe the limit is 7 years. So 2025 to 2031.

I imagine this is purely in place to prevent present-day GMs from screwing over future GMs, no matter how much they seem to do anyway.

I don't think the NHL has an official limit. It's just that you rarely see teams trading more than two drafts in advance.

That's the NBA.
And the reason it's so far out is because they have rules against trading first round picks in consecutive years.
I could have sworn there has been a couple 2028 picks traded already and that's 4 drafts away.
Yes, two 2028 picks have been traded. 2028 NHL Entry Draft Pending Transactions

Flames traded that 7th in 2028 in the Kuzmenko + Pelletier trade. I don't know of other 2028 draft picks or later traded. I didn't know what I was doing with the Puckepedia draft pick thing.

Kind of seem like a random pointless add at that point (7th 2028).

One of the last time this came up, I thought there was no limit? Mostly just common sense that teams wouldn't trade a pick a decade down the road since most GMs don't have that sort of job security.

I thought there might be some limitation with the CBA expiring but that didn't seem to be the case. Although I'd have to check if there were trades where a team traded for a future 8th round pick and then the draft got reduced to 7 rounds type of thing.

Edit: Found an example, LA traded a 2004 9th rounder (#271) to Columbus for a 2005 8th rounder. Draft was reduced to 7 rounds with the 2005 CBA. The league awarded LA with a pick at the end of the 2005 7th (#226). So Columbus ended up not giving up anything. Also today I learned that the league grandfathered in UFA compensation picks in 2005 for free agents who signed in the summer of 2004. That would be done away with in that CBA.

That or the fax ended up smearing making the 5 look like an 8.

Agreed though. It honestly must have been Briere making a mistake in asking Conroy for any late round pick to make the deal look better. Conroy cheekily said a 7th in 2028 expecting pushback and was surprised when there was none.

No way Briere requested a pick like that.

I feel like pretty transparently was Briere just wanting the trade to look better when posted on a graphic knowing the value was not good

The video Briere made explaining the trade was its own crazy ride. I legit wondered at one point if I/Philly fans were being trolled with a deep fake. The logic was so brutal. No gloating about winning the trade. Just compassion for Philly fans for that brutal mismanagement group.

Flyers fans, many thanks again for the donation of hope that was made to the Flames rebuilding foundation. I hope good vibes reach you guys soon.

GM usually have a short leash and must focus on short term success, but I always thought that if I was a GM, I would use the fact that 1st round picks have much less value when they are far away in the future, to try to accumulate as much as possible, especially in a rebuilding scenario.

Example. If I'm a rebuilding team with a few assets to sell, instead of requesting 1st round picks for 2025 from contending teams, I would request multiple 1st and 2nd round picks from 2029 and 2030, ideally unprotected.

Sure, that means your team will suck for the next 5-7 years (which is why no owner would allow that), but can you imagine the impact it would make if you arrive in 2029 and 2030 with, let's say, 20-25 picks in the first 2 rounds, with multiple shots are winning the lottery?

If the Leafs thought they could get away with trading picks decades in the future for present day help they would have done so years ago when they tanked a season for Matthews.

Is there a stat tracker for that trade?

Didn't they change it recently? I could swear the first rule of modern journalism is - we don't actually do journalism anymore, we just say whatever will benefit the shareholders the most.
That while keeping "how can relate this to Nazism?" thought in the fact of your mind
