What are some under the radar contracts that you think will age horribly?

Hilarious thinking about Huberdeau, who is on pace for a 35g season. Great contract? No. "Horrible" or "awful" contract? Also no. Even the Kadri contract on the Flames is not going to be horrible by the end of it. 100mil+ cap in 2 years is going to make a lot of these contracts be minimal overpayment.

It's already the unanimous opinion that Chandler Stephenson's contract is horrible. He wasn't even passable as a top 9 F until the last few weeks.

And it's the majority opinion on HF Kraken that Larsson's contract is bad. Personally I think he might be more mentally checked out than physically. The team is aimless right now.

You can get a 30-30 one way winger for half his price.

Cool. How many of those wingers average almost 1min a game of PK time and 19min a night? His contract is not the greatest, but no Flames fan is complaining about his contributions to the Flames this year. He is a very serviceable 1st line winger.

No it absolutely is a horrible contract. He’s paid like a PPG+ player, and he’s continuing to produce like a 50-60 point guy. He might be scoring more goals, but his production still hasn’t really gone up.

Nobody is talking about the Kadri contract being bad in terms of the first like 5 years. It’s the fact he’s still paid 7 million when he’s nearing 39 that people don’t like. We’ll see what the cap does, but the cap maybe rising enough to reduce how bad of contract it is doesn’t mean it isn’t bad.

Vincent Desharnais has been an absolute yard sale in Vancouver. He's borderline unplayable.
His contract is only 2 years long, so one year after this season.

Yes, he’s not borderline, he is not even NHL level at this time.

But a one year term not aging well? Even a cup of coffee cools down soon after being brewed. It’s 3 bucks and you go buy another one if so. It’s not like you bought a house or something.

Hamilton is becoming an albatross in New Jersey. Think it’s likely he’s moved this summer before the cats out of the bag.

He's certainly trending down, but I don't think we're approaching albatross territory just yet. The guy is still two seasons removed from finishing 6th in Norris voting - he's also a RHD, which are always in demand, and he one of the top PP QB's, though his goal scoring is down this season.

He's due a $10.5M signing bonus on July 1st, at which point his NMC turns to a 10 team trade list. He would then be owed just $14.65M over his final 3 years, though carrying the $9M cap hit, during which he'll be 32-34 years old.

Guess it depends on how he structures his trade list - could easily make it very difficult for NJ to move him depending on the 10 teams he selects, though there's also a risk that backfires if the Devils are willing to retain salary, making him affordable/attractive to one of those teams. If Kovacevic leaves via free agency (the most likely scenario), the Devils probably decide to keep him anyway, slot Nemec into the lineup and give Casey some more time to develop/be used as an injury call-up next season.

For the purpose of this thread though, it's also tough to see how his contract would "age horribly" considering there are just 3 seasons left after this one. His play would really have to take a nosedive and quick.

Clearly you don't watch the Flames much. Last two years it was the worst contract in the league imo.

Completely different player this year, finally got over his mental blocks where he couldn't even make simple passes.

Whole team is just a black hole for offense, over compensating on defense. No ones getting ppg on this team right now.

Results matter and the fact his production basically hasn’t changed (his pace is like 4 points higher over 82 games compared to his first year in Calgary) means you probably are no more likely to find a taker for his contract this year compared to last year.

Flames fan by any chance ?

I agree if Huberdeau ends up with 35 goals, thats not bad at all. Assists are overrated.

Though he already has TWO underperforming seasons under his belt and is not getting any younger either. One (possible fluke) season does not change anything right now. He is not getting paid $8M but almost $11M.

He is on pace for 32 goals btw, not 35.

He's paid to be a 100 point winger, not for 1min of PK time...I mean that's a nice bonus he can do that but still. Awful contract.

If all GMs are looking at is raw stats they are moronic.

They completely changed how they play and have way less depth to help offense out. 0.75 ppg on this team compared to .64ppg last year is a monumental increase.

Hell we went from the highest scoring defense to the lowest scoring. You don't think that effects forwards?

I don't think anything that happens in Toronto can be "under the radar", but Morgan Reilly's deal gets much less attention and scrutiny than the big 4.

And it's already not looking great. Only $7.5M but he's struggled this year with arguably (not really arguable) the best d-core around him since he became a Leaf. Berube is just the latest coach trying to find someone suitable to pair him with so that's telling right there.

Signed through '29-30 with full NMC until the last 2 years (then a 10-team no-trade list) so the Leafs will have some flexibility then .... but the summer of 2028 is a long way off.
