What a Season!

It was a hell of a special season, that's for sure. Really wish the Jets could have gone further in the playoffs, but they exceeded my very modest expectations. They finally got a banner, even if it isn't the one everyone chases. Helle needs to get his yips out of the playoffs.
It feels like he took a step in the Dallas series.

I'm already starting to temper my expectations for next year.
It will be tough to match this season.

I think it might be difficult to replicate the regular season success we had but as recent history has shown us, regular season success is superficial. You don't need to be the best team in the league, your conference or even your division to do on a deep run. You just need to work towards the playoffs get in and play your game and we have a good foundation to build off of now. It seems like everyone we have wants to be here and is committed to the cause. We have a solid structure and just need to build on top of it. Remove the pieces that dont fit that structure and replace them with pieces that do.

Cup or bust is just setting yourself up for disappointment - and probably endless disappointment. The Cup must be the goal, IMO, but demanding that goal be met is toxic.
Yup ... just look at the Caps in the last 20 years with Ovechkin.
Only once did they get by the 2nd round ... the year they won the Cup.
Some teams have never won in over 50 years ... its not that easy.

Sorry, but Cup or bust. Seeing that President's Trophy banner in the building will bring up game 7 magic for most, but for me it's a reminder of how bad we were most games this postseason. Perfetti's goal is like Bautista's batflip: meaningless. I realize I'm more negative than most on here, so I will end with something we can all agree on: Scheifele brought out the best in sportsmanship in the absolute worst of circumstances. RIP Brad; I know you'd have been real proud.
There are 32 teams now and a Canadian team hasn't won since the internet went public. Combined with the fact that the Jets are the smallest market in North American pro sports and I feel like Cup or bust can't make sense for Winnipeg unless you become like Edmonton and get a McDavid who can just win series' by himself.

Yeah, just look st the success rate of the other small and undesirable markets the last decade. It's all well and good to want a cup but it's incredibly hard to build a consistent cup contending team, especially when you aren't in a desirable market. Chevy has done a hell of a job being able to put a consistently good to great product on the ice the last 8 years.

7 times in the playoffs and 3 times through round 1. There are plenty of orgs that would kill for those results.

We all want more but we should still be appreciative of what has been accomplished in this market to date.

Indeed, look at teams like Minnesota and Columbus. Or even Calgary and Vancouver. And it hasn't been as long as it feels, realistically. We can basically write off 2012, 13, and 14. Those teams were basically the Atlanta Thrashers with some Manitoba Moose trappings. Those years were to get prospects because the Thrashers had literally none. So since 15, where they got an actual NHL coach and Jets developed players started coming in, the team has been quite successful given it's limitations. 2018 still stings though. That team would have beat Washington.

Feels like a change in perspective from you, Mort. It wasn't long ago you were talking about not wanting to be in the mushy middle and how Winnipeg would support a rebuild in the stands because of excitement for the future.

Yeah, that's all. :sarcasm::laugh:
If we lose Ehlers and still don't have a good 2C it will be tough. It won't be easy if we keep Ehlers and still don't have a 2C. I think we need a different partner for Morrissey and I'm not sure what management is thinking about our 3rd pair D. So we have known holes right now and may have more soon.

The picture gets brighter if Chevy manages to sign Ehlers but I am not counting on that. This could be a very interesting off-season. What will Chevy do?

Too early to think about who the Jets are losing since nobody has been lost.
Remember all the doom and gloom of losing Scheifele and Hellebuyck after the VGK series?
2C can also be fixed by getting a Sam Bennett/Tom Wilson winger.
I would have no problem losing Ehlers or Vilardi for that type of playoff grit winger.
Protecting Morrissey should be a top priority ... DeMelo as partner cannot do it for the playoffs. I would even move him down to third pairing.
Perfetti and Samberg made a big jump this season hopefully next season just one of the prospect steps up and the Jets should be in good shape if no major injuries occur.
It would be nice after this great season & playoff run some FA players seriously think about signing with the Jets.

Buffalo would kill just to make the playoffs, nevermind winning a round

You have every right to feel this way but try watching this again and you might not think it was meaningless. This showed me that this group of players never gave up which in the past down 3-1 we might have. Yes we had a couple of bad games in the playoffs especially Helly but we also had some great games in the playoffs and we fought hard right to the very end.

Okay, I'm done liking almost every post in this thread.

My heart breaks for Scheifele. My dad passed last Sunday, and it's been a tough week.

I'm proud of this team. They never gave up.

What a great season! I'll never forget it.
I'm so sorry about your Dad, that's heartbreaking. My condolences to you and your family.

Always enjoy seeing you pop up in my likes, hope the Jets have brought you a measure of comfort, if not say least distraction. Bon courage.

Was he a Jet fan?

It seems once Scheifele's dad past most on here realized it is just a game and the intensity of the season and our expectations were reduced or tempered.

It was a great regular season with some great playoff moments. This squad without Jmo was not going to beat Edmonton.

At least it did not end with boos, debris on the ice and jerseys tossed!
