What’s it like being Sportnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the NHL insider, on Trade Deadline day?

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

I appreciate the work of all the league wide insiders but this guy is at the top imo.

This vid makes both jealous of his job and terrified of it lol

WhatsApp, text messages, and SIGNAL? Pfft, the Bob Father did his insiding using pigeons and phone booths.

Actually a very nice behind the scenes clip, thanks for sharing, Elliott is great and being a “legit” insider is indeed hard work. He is the de facto insider since Bob Mckenzie left the scene full time.

Never thought of that but yeah. He’s the new Bobby Mac

This is another example of the NHL following in the NBA’s shadow: the glorification/romanticization of the “Insider”.

It kind of came to the forefront when Woj retired and people were legitimately eulogizing him. To me it’s strange and further confirmation that people care more and more about off-the-field news and drama rather than what actually happens on the court/ice.

Friedman talks about contracts and play. No off ice drama.

And the insider isn’t new to hockey. Like a guy mentioned earlier…Bob McKenzie was the granddad of insiders. The nhl trade deadline has been a big thing for a long time.

Not sure what it’s like in the nba but I’m pretty sure the nhl isn’t copying the nba. I’ve never seen an all day coverage show of the nba trade deadline.

You misunderstand.

A. I’m aware that insiders like MacKenzie existed before Friedman.
B. I understand that Friedman isn’t reporting on off ice drama.

I’m referring to the relatively new emergence of the “Insider” as the object of attention, and to some extent people craving “transaction news” over actual on-ice play. It’s telling that HFBoards breaks down every year at the Trade Deadline and July 1st but never during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

One example: let’s marvel at the Insider’s phone screen time (I’ve seen that recently in the NBA with Shams Charania too). The fascination with these Insiders is strange and unwarranted: breaking news two minutes before other outlets provides little value.

Well, for one thing, the Stanley Cup playoffs only involves 16 (sixteen) teams. Where as the trading deadline can potentially involve every team. More teams means for fans, means more coverage.
