What’s going on with Zegras?

Zegras is the first draft pick of the rebuild. The next 3 first rounders, Tracey, Drysdale, Perreault are all gone. Zegras had to develop under the Eakins regime, which was terrible structure or no structure.

Hasn't adjusted to Cronin or fit in well with Cronin. Either he's a fit or he's not. Whether Cronin lasts will be dependent on how or whether the other kids develop like Carlsson, MacTavish, Mint, Zell, etc. If those guys do, then Zegras will be moved. If the other kids don't develop, then Verbeek will have to admit that his coaching hire was wrong and make a HC change. And see if that turns it around for Zegras.

Man I really hope what you mean by this is Cronin gets the axe if these kids haven't developed enough by mid season this year. If we have to wait until you can say these kids aren't developing *period* to fire this idiot, then Ducks fans might as well get ready for another 4-8 years of rebuilding through the draft.

He's PV's first HC hire, so he's going to want to give him as much rope as possible, but your concern is valid that you don't want to waste another half season if the first 40 don't show much results for the development of the kids. Not likely to hire the next permanent coach mid season. So, which interim one would be able to come in and get it turned around?

I think coaching change/ or trade he’ll be fine.

Maybe even just going back to center.

But right now he looks like he’s lackin confidence… when he’s on he’s great at attacking the defense(specially 1 on 1) and creating passing lanes, and using his vision to find those lanes…. he hasn’t really done that this season, not nearly as much in years past . Team is trying to get him to play a dump and chase style , but he’s at his best when he’s carrying the puck…. It’s just not a great fit in Anaheim with what they want him to do.

He hasn’t looked bad, he just doesn’t look like himself this year… and idk where you saw him get praise…. Lol he was getting dragged by opposing fans mostly

He seems like an incredible buy low if you can put him in the right situation. I think if you put him on a line with Boldy and Ek he’s be awesome. I don’t think Guerin would be a fan of his overall game though and probably doesn’t actually consider him a target. I would do 1st + prospect for him forsure

TBF, you put just about anyone on a line with JEE and Boldy and they'd do fine.

1st + Ohgren.... I'd do it, but it would make for a bad team fit if Zegras is really best as a C. JEE has to play C, and I've never seen Rossi play anything other than C. Where does that leave Zegras? He might like being a C, but his FO ability and defensive play makes Marco Rossi look like Patrice Bergeron.

I would imagine ANA would want Yurov +, if not Buium or Rossi. I don't know that I am crazy about any of those trades. It's hard to really know how to evaluate Zegras right now. It's completely within the realm of possibility that he and Boldy take off together offensively, while JEE does the heavy lifting otherwise. He could also come to MN and continue the downward trend of the past two seasons. It's pretty rare to see a young player like him disappear after two vg offensive years as a 20-21 yo.

MN certainly has some pieces that might interest ANA.

Zegras is playing on a Ducks team that isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so whatever he does or doesn't do really has no effect on anything so long as he avoids injury. The checks will clear either way. So why not just kick back and enjoy the Newport Beach lifestyle and not overly exert yourself to no meaningful purpose?

Would love to have him in Vegas.
And wouldn't want you working at my company or playing for my team. 😉

Pretty good video showing zegras growing/maturing in all 3 zones… the production will come.

A lot of him doing things people wanted to see him do, or claim he doesn’t do.

Before when he’s scoring, he doesn’t play defense, production doesn’t matter

Now he’s maturing and paying attention to details and people complain about production

Haters gunna hate it seems

No one is complaining. And they can rate or critique a player without hating them.

But some fans just love to sing out "haters gonna hate" 😉

I can't weigh in on Zegras level of play. As I can't remember the last time I watched a Ducks game.

i assume that is the same for most people

ducks arnt very good since zegras has gotten there, and they play very late for a large portion of hockey fans.

I don't think they're forcing dump and chase. Every nhl team wants to carry the puck in on the rush. If the opponent doesn't give you space to do so, you chip it in....which all teams do when there's no room. That's why "get pucks deep" cliche exists..

The ducks get stuck in their own zone a lot and once they get the puck, there's not enough juice to get into the other end on the rush. Then they dump for a line change/repeat.

Other than terry, carlsson, and lundestrom, the ducks are struggling to hold on to the puck in the o zone. Everyone else gets cut off along the boards and lose the puck in the scrums. Zegras is definitely better at center than wing.

I think part of the issue is he got bypassed by Carlsson and MacTavish who are just bigger and better at most everything......more rounded players.

There may be maturity issues here too. Coming in to the NHL as a teenager putting up lots of points can go to someone's head and if they don't push themselves (or no one else does for them) to round out their games it's not a surprise when they plateau. The Ducks seem to be getting better without him making progress. What that says I think is he's going to be moving along pretty soon but what the Ducks will accept as a return might delay that.

Coming from where he did I know a lot of Rangers fans that really really want him. I'm not as convinced he'd be that good of a fit. Where does he go with us? I don't see how he makes us better.

He has cleaned up most of his immaturity
- Plays in all 3 zones, competing on the boards
- doesnt sing taylor swift on the bench
- doesnt take many bad penalties

I think he is making progress as a complete player, saying he isnt progressing is underselling him. Now its at a point where you need to find the balance of being a solid 3 zone player, but start adding in your creativity/flare which makes you such a weapon offensively into that game.... People just need to learn to be patient with young players, hes still just 23, has 2 60 point seasons under his belt, and now improving the details of his game in all 3 zones, when the points start flowing(and they will), hes going to be a fantastic player.

As a grumpy old "kids these days" guy who doesn't really watch Ducks games, I find him comparable to a hockey version of Jason Williams from the NBA. Top 10 pick, hype off flashy highlight reel tricks, amounted to just an average everyday guy at his position.

At this point give McClellan a shot. His big issue is he sucks in the playoffs and that's not really Anaheim's concern atm.
