Fast forwarding to this season, we still see Florida leading the way dumping the puck in 60% of the time. Honing in on Detroit, we see that the Wings are dumping the puck in only 50% of the time (19th) and are recovering a woeful 22.29% (27th) of those dump-ins. This may be a big part of the reason why it feels like the Wings are always chasing the puck and struggling to sustain offensive rushes

This came into my email the other day and thought I'd share since our weak forecheck has been an issue this year. What we are seeing with our eyes is definitely being backed up by stats apparently. We're just bad at this. But for some context Pittsburgh is the best team at recovering their dumpins and they are still less than 30% successful. So, while we might have the fifth worst success rate, we're less than 7% points off the best.

If anyone has it, I'd be really interested in what our average zone times are compared to the rest of the league. I am thinking that a bigger issue isn't necessarily that we don't win control enough, but that when we do have control it is very short lived. Meanwhile, whenever our opponents gain control in our zone they set up camp and hang out of for a few minutes at a time.

Our dump ins are a survival tactic, our guys are usually dog tired from being in the defensive zone and just looking to dump and change.

Yeah a lot of our dump and chase is initiated by our tired D who are just eager to change. It is usually dumped in when our forwards are flat footed or also changing. We also have a smaller forward group overall so this doesn't help matters. The only line that is really good at winning those 50/50 battles consistently is the Ras/Copp/Fisher line.

When we hit the line with any sort of speed we do a decent job on the forecheck.

Outside of the first line which has two puck hounds in Raymond and Larkin, who else is good at forechecking on this team?

Kasper can do it, but he is still learning and feeling out the NHL level. Motte can puck retrieval at times, but doesn't do anything of use with it. Sometimes DeBrincat can surprise on this but it isn't his top quality.

The rest? Not getting it done. Copp, Compher, Ras, Veleno, Tarasenko don't retrieve much and all of them seem to be easy to get to turn the puck over without any meaningful chances happening when they attempt to carry in. Fischer I would say is a little meh in this area.

Ras and Veleno are the ones that really annoy me with how bad they are at it, that should be their thing.

They are just bodies. If Mazur wasn't hurt these dudes would be sitting.
