AA only shied away from FA in the past because, judging by a case by case analysis, there really wasn't a suitable target to go after. Chapman was a target in 2010, 2011 had really nobody special, 2012 the Jays were somewhat in on Reyes and Darvish (and even some rumours regarding Ortiz), 2013 the Jays had an offer on the table for Anibal Sanchez but the Tigers matched, 2014 obviously saw them net Martin. The 5 year rule really stopped them from signing albatross contracts, but that rule can be broken this year for a guy like Heyward, easily.

Also he doesn't have the prospect capital he's had in the past so he'll have to use FA to fill holes. Heyward, Bastardo and a mid rotation arm are the 3 things I'd want him to get. Also re-sign Estrada. If Price was willing to sign a shorter deal him as well but I highly doubt he'd do that.

Heyward is not a realistic FA target, he's most likely commanding close to 200mil on a nice long-term contract for the age that he's hitting FA. It isn't going to sit well with Rogers, plus there are numerous NL and AL teams that would relish the opportunity at signing Heyward. It's going to be a bidding war for his services.

"Gregg Zaun said it was a balk!" - Don Cherry.

I hope Don realizes just because him and Zaun share the same taste in suits doesn't make them both smart.

AA seems to shy away from the free agent market if you're using history as a benchmark.

Trades though as you said are his bread and butter. I imagine he probably already has a contingency plan if Price walks.

Not against that as long as they resign the guys we own (Price, Estrada, Navarro, etc.). If for some reason they decide to sign a guy (maybe for the bullpen), hopefully it's not on a super long term deal unless they are as confident as they were with Martin.

We've got some trade chips we could easily use to prevent having to overpay in free agency, but do what you've got to do. I doubt we need to resort to the FA all that much to fix our problems though.

He's not an unrealistic target, but him signing with the Jays is unlikely to happen. We really don't know what the Jays plans are on the free agent market.

Agreed. I have to think though we will end up with at least 1 of the good outfielders in Free Agency since we have a big hole in LF and plenty of capable free agents.

I get this feeling that we're going to overpay David Price to get him back. And I think it'll be a good move. He's a character guy that you want on the team and in the locker room. It's going to hurt having 3 players (tulo, martin,dp) making almost half your payroll, but we got to have pitching

Id love cespedes just for the joke of offence we'd have, but it would not be the right move. I think Pompey/Pillar/Saunders will fight for the 2 out field spots thats not jose bautista

Pillar will start the season at CF. He's earned it.

According to Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, if the Toronto Blue Jays don’t re-sign David Price, Mark Buerhle, and R.A. Dickey, they will have more than $40 million to spend in the off-season on pitching.

The Blue Jays have $20 million in Buehrle money, almost $7 million in Price money and if they pick up R.A. Dickey’s $12-million option, that means they’ll have about $30 million to spend in the off-season on pitching. If they don’t bring Dickey back, that number is more than $40 million ...

What joke offense? You do realize the Blue Jays either led or were top-5 in offensive stats?

beeston’s policy of capping contract length at five years has long been a bone of contention among fans – not to mention the agents of elite players who usually get that sort of term. Shapiro’s outlook on the matter is unclear, and will determine whether the blue jays make a legitimate play for price or not.

The rotation is the prime concern, with marcus stroman the only starter sure to be in the 2016 rotation. Mark buehrle, who may retire, is also eligible for free agency, r.a. Dickey has a $12 million club option while drew hutchison, bumped from the rotation in september and left off the playoff roster, is eligible for arbitration.

One or both of aaron sanchez and roberto osuna could be stretched out, but they’re not guaranteed to transition seamlessly into the rotation. Even if they do, they’d leave gaping holes in the bullpen, with no internal answers to replace them.

Other free agents of note include catcher dioner navarro and relievers mark lowe and the retiring latroy hawkins, meaning a lot of the connective tissue around vital organs bautista, encarnacion, josh donaldson, troy tulowitzki, russell martin and stroman must be re-signed or replaced.

that’s a lot of deft-touch work for a roster that will need to build off all accomplished in 2015, one already with $59 million committed to four players. Picking up dickey’s option pushes the total to $71 million, although the blue jays could also pull an adam lind on him, exercising the option and then dealing the player.

The payroll this year pushed toward $140 million, and if it remains in the same range, that doesn’t leave a lot of money sitting around, especially with donaldson’s salary due to shoot up into the $12 million range through arbitration.

Ben revere, brett cecil, michael saunders and justin smoak are also eligible for arbitration, and beyond outfielder dalton pompey, there are no on-the-cusp minor-leaguers ready to make the jump and provide cheap help, although there are hopes hard-throwing right-hander connor greene comes quick.

but, again, all that flows from how shapiro sees things, and whether or not anthopoulos returns. He’s got the support of his players.

You have to think they're willing to go a bit higher the next season with the boost in attendance and revenue from this season. Honestly, if they have a good team that dominates all season like it did the second half, they'll hit 4M in attendance.

They could easily spend 160M and still be in good shape. Up to Shapiro to sell it though.

If the reaction from the fan base over the last few months hasn't convinced Rogers that it's worth investing in putting a winning product on the field, nothing will.

I have no doubt that the budget will increase.

You'd think the GM would have as much funds as possible to bring in whoever he has to. With ratings up all season and ticket sales/revenue way up.

They don't have the enormous and asinine TV deals that the big US teams have. The Dodgers can literally spend 300+ million a year if they want because of their TV deal. It's nuts.

Oh I absolutely do. I just see the value in getting a proven bat and then trading a Pompey for a proven arm (part of a package). That in theory let's us upgrade in two places and helps keep the window wide open.

but Pompey doesn't have any value, he's only considered a good prospect because he's Canadian. If he was from Mississippi nobody would have heard of him :sarcasm:
