I dont agree that a Leafs player should have been injured BUT there should be an answer of some kind. Crickets shouldnt be an option but when a team is as soft as this team currently is then thats going to be the response 10 times out of 10.
Why not try to injure one? A plug who shouldn’t be in the NHL takes out one of your Top 4 dman. He gets suspended? Who cares. Does not hurt TO. That meathead won’t change his thinking. Teams would however think twice about take these kinds of shots knowing their stars will pay. They chose to play that idiot. Make them pay the price.

That’s why the 80s was better. Good Players got protected, take out a good player you got a cross check to the head.

I appreciate the 80's hockey as much as anyone but I dont agree with injuring a player on the other team as retribution.
That said I would like to see the team be heavy on the other teams star players.
Make life very uncomfortable for them but this team just isnt built that way.

They are a skill team with very little functional toughness especially with Kane out of the lineup.
That's a concern IMO.

‘He got deep and he got flat. I would have liked to see him make a better read on the play. You have to make a better read’.

Devan Dubnyk with some interesting comments on Skinner’s game and the GWG specifically. People can hear him on the GYB podcast.

Rob Brown apologizing all over himself for Skinner. No surprise there.

I told what they should have done. One of their top players should have been ran head first into the boards. Reaves being gone helps the leafs. We lose a top 4 d man for how long? It’s f***ing embarrassing they did nothing.
Nothing is served by it. The Leafs are a team we face twice a season and NEVER will in the playoffs. Reaves was sent off. So you're suggesting the Oilers should have just pummeled somebody on the Leafs because Reaves is an imbecile. "Eye for an eye makes us all blind"

I get that people are angry about it. But you seem to be suggesting the Oilers do worse just to even some kind of score. How you beat this kind of thing is score a couple goals on the 5min PP.

If this is a 7 game playoff series then I'm saying different things. But its a one off essentially. We'll see if theres any revenge back in Edmonton but the Oilers don't have anybody to send after Reaves.

Its up to the NHL to police these things or the org to even have an enforcer that does. One of the reasons Reaves would feel as brave as to do that to Nurse is we don't have anybody in the roster that can take care of such things.

I'm sure all the players from the 70's and 80's wouldn't necessarily suggest through their CTE pain and other debilitating injuries that it was better. There was a time in the NHL where donnybrooks were regular and players hospitalized frequently through non hockey plays and constant fights. One of those was Teddy Green. I met the man many times. I watched him get old and frail before his time and how his body could barely move anymore, barely walk slowly, all due to the mayhem that was hockey in the "old times" of everybody paying a price. Thats some price. Giving up any chance of a healthy life for the rest of life. Yeah it was worse back then, far worse.

I actually believe what Reaves did was intentional. That he also targeted Nurse. Alpha to Alpah I do think however the reason he ran Nurse was to egg him onto a fight. I'm not positive that he attempted to injure him so severely. None of us know. The NHL should fine Reaves for a longtime for this one. But like you say nothing really that the Leafs end up losing. A proper league would prevent players like Reaves from even being in the league. They can do that now.

He should have been benched after the first turn over. Knob got what he deserved tonight honestly. You gotta lay down the law. A Sutter or Torts would've killed Bouchard for making that play and buried them at the end of the bench, Knob just throws him back out there.

I get it maybe it's the Paul Coffey thing of "get back out there and make plays" but there's gotta be some consequences for doing that.
meh. You can tell from Boochs reaction immediately that he knew he monumentally f***ed up. Good thing we're not coaches around here. Every personality is different. If I'm guessing players like Booch and Nurse can tunnel themselves into the ice themselves perfectly fine and that perhaps the best thing for those players is to get over it. Because it seems to impact their game adversely if they get into a rut, then the plays start being regular. For some players consequencing might work. For others its hand holding. But the Oilers should consider that in next contract. Booch is going to have some of these moments. Most coaches throw the player back out there to help them get through it.

"Gotta be some consequence" for what reason? Only learning, and it depends on how the player learns. The coaches job is to get the player to be better, more complete, and everything in time. I'll take a Bouchard over a Tanev any day of he week. The Oilers are schooling that sod for all eternity.

Shame on Chris Cuthbert. (I think it was him)

"Draisaitl is on a 4th line shift with Podkolzin and Perry, he's getting an extra shift with the 4th line" He said this in first period. Nobody corrected him.

Like seriously tell us you don't even know what line Drai is on, who is linemates are or anything. How absolutely embarrassing to make such an uninformed remark on HNIC national broadcast between the Oilers and Leafs.

These commentators have one job, to be even the least bit credible and informed. They couldn't even tell you the Oilers lines. Anybody that attends this board knows better.

Skinner needs to be way better but momentum killing 5 minute waste of time after Nurse got hurt should be the major story tonight. If they blow the game wide open there by scoring a couple it’s a completely different story. Instead they manage to generate absolutely nothing, kill any momentum they might’ve had and force themselves to play a perfect game the rest of the way.

It is annoying as hell how Rob Brown defends any Oiler players mistake. Just crazy how he can do it with a straight face.

I just saw the hit.

If Nurse is out long term, we're royally f***ed
Remember how fans wanted Nurse gone and called him trash?

Sorry I just had to say that. If he is out long term, we have to act now. Our 3rd pair is friggin Stecher and Dermott if Nurse is out long term

Nurse has been playing good hockey lately and stepped up. Just when he seemed to look like a proper D, he gets taken out, what a shame.

If Nurse is a right hand shot, I guarantee you Bouchard would be moved off the top pair. He is basically hiding under Ekholm. As much flack as everyone here gives Nurse, he can't hide as he is covering a revolving door of different Ds each night.

He also spends multiple minutes of the podcast slobbering all over Marner. Honestly that podcast is pretty shit when Strudwick isn’t there.

Frustrating, can't outscore your problems in goal and Bouchard's defensive gaffes.
I guess Nurse will be out for some time, just when he started to up his game. Yay.

I swear, every time the Oilers lose a game (or "fail to win", rather than "lose", in overtime, as the NHL's ridiculous point system goes) I have to skip reading the first four or five pages of the post-game thread. So, FYI, if you're posting immediately after games, I'm not reading it! So much "dumb" that I can't take it.

Anyway...

Third game in a row with the same script: Oilers outplay opponent, manage only a tie (all three games go to overtime, at which point it's just novelty-time so I don't really care what happens). I guess, in the positive sense, they managed to squeak out the cheap, novelty-point in two of the three games, so it's all okay in the end, but... How does a club have so many decent forwards and an elite offensive D-man (and two more who put up good ES points) and consistently struggle to score so much? At least they usually get about three on the road, whereas it's been about two per game at home.

The turning point here was the 5-minute PP, during which the Oilers had their chance to lock-down a road win. They needed to score there. They did not. That set the stage for an embarrassing two goals in the third period.

Team leaders need to think about how rare and special a 5-minute match penalty PP is. This is how you win the game. The club has to play that PP with a sense of URGENCY, not lollygagging. You score once? Great, now go for another one. You get another one? Great, now go for another one! (The St. Louis Blues once scored 4 times on a five-minute PP.) The Oilers take a 5-minute PP like it's a walk-in-the-park, just standing still and trying to pass around the perimeter.

Anyway, the Oilers are just talented (McDavid-ed) enough to be competitive, but so far this year they notably lack a killer instinct and are utterly incompetent at holding down leads in the third period. This is getting to be a big issue.

Positives from this game:
-- The PK finally succeeded (more due to dumb luck than good PK-ing, but I'll take it)
-- Henrique finally scored (where ya been?)
-- The defense mostly did a good job after Nurse went out -- they held the fort fairly nicely, all things considered (Bouchard's pass-gaffe and third Leafs' goal notwithstanding)

Speaking of Nurse, that hit was awful. How dumb does a 4th-liner have to be to run a guy's head and get tossed / suspended for nothing? Well, we have our answer...

By the way, we're now 18 games into the season. How many games do you think the Oilers have won in three periods? (you know the ones that count in the playoffs...?)

Answer: FIVE games

They have five real wins in 18 games played. Who have they managed to actually defeat this season?:
- Nashville x 2
- Pittsburgh
- Calgary
- Vancouver

Vancouver and Calgary are technically playoff teams right now (since the Pacific is so bad), but I'll be shocked if the Flames make the playoffs this year. As far as I'm concerned, the Oilers have won 1 real game against a playoff team this season.

They'll probably beat Montreal because Montreal blows, but I won't be impressed until they start beating real clubs...

The match penalty results in the player being tossed from the game. Not sure what you think the Oilers ought to have done. Just go at somebody because Reaves is an idiot? Every player on both benches knows he is.
Could’ve not waited at the Oiler bus stop. That was a gutless response to a gutless play.

I mean... can you really blame him for thinking those two wingers would be constituting the 4th line?

Podkolzin is one of the least offensively talented forwards we've had in years. 10+ games now he's been gifted a 2nd line spot and continues to do nothing with it.

This forward group desperately needs a major shakeup to every line along with some new blood from the AHL team.

Not true. He skated till he saw Ek was closer.

He coasted into an area that maybe the puck gets punched out to.

His giveaway was the absolute horrible play
Bouch sucks at D, good offensive instincts but horrendous D. On the 3rd goal he stopped skating the moment the puck went past him at the opposing blue line. Considering he was to blame on the 2nd GA you think it would have inspired a better effort there.
