Weak victim mentality. I've never been a "hockey is going soft we need players throwing Scott Stevens hits all the time" guy but my goodness, it was four clean hits! One of which Laine initiated, and another that preceded several cross checks from Laine. Also of note is the fact none of his teammates stood up for him, speaks volumes about the nature of the hits and how his teammates felt about his antics.

I've officially decided that Patrik Laine is Impish this year. Definitely not admirable.
I can all but guarantee the Laine to center experiment, and his comments during that saga, were not taken anywhere near positive from his CBJ teammates in the way the pro-Laine delegation made it seem back then. Not to mention he literally had ISSUES with EVERY coach. If I could pay money for anything in life, it would be to know how the meeting between Babcock and Laine went.
The comments Laine made are so laughable about the CBJ’s mentality, in relation to himself, and/or ignoring the huge impact he had on the teams apparent “mindset”.
What makes it less “laughable” and yet is important to show Laine for what he truly is, is the reality of what happened with Gaudreau over the summer. He literally could have simply waited to trash whoever he wanted to trash.
They have to release a Behind the Battle video related to this, do they not??

So, once again, where were the likes of Xhekaj? This is the type of situation that we brought in Gudbranson and Olivier after that 2021-2022 season with the prime example being the Wild game that year.
If, and really I doubt it is but if it is, they benched Laine to "protect" him that says more about their franchise than us right now. If you think your teammate is getting whacked send out WIFI to knock it off (unless you are that afraid of Olivier)

Pretty sure the usual BHB episode they do for the summer was scrapped. Maybe parts of it will be included in the next one, but idk, I doubt it.

I'm happy for him that he has played well since he is on a new team, but doesn't change who he is.
Laine has always been ultra talented Diva, who when faced with a tough situation develops a losers limp. That will never change.
Him quitting on the team last year proved it again. Him exiting the CBJ game showed again he's a quitter when times get tough.
So glad he's gone. So glad the new management understands it's not about acquiring the most talented players in every trade, but rather putting together the best team. Jarmo and Laine was a perfect match.

I'm pretty sure it's poor rationalization on the part of some Habs. They don't want to believe that he really is that much of a narcissistic asshole, so they instead invent a narrative about how our team is a bunch of evil intent-to-injure jerks to explain Laine's disappearance.
Thankfully, from what I can tell on the mains, there's also a fair-sized contingent of Habs fans that aren't buying it.
To my generation, that was known as Erich Barnes Disease. Barnes was a well-regarded defensive back (mostly with the Giants) who, whenever beaten, developed that same limp!
We just had that in the Jackets fanbase for four years.
After the first season, when Laine was awful throughout, Porty first reported about the leadership group wanting Laine out. The response from much of the fanbase was that Porty must be just a hater, and somehow simultaneously Cam and the other leaders (but especially Cam for some reason) are traitors and assholes and need to be traded. There were even longtime Jackets fans here saying good riddance to Cam over it.
I've never seen a player with so many excuses made for them, and other players and coaches demonized by the fans on behalf of the player. This was already how it went in Winnipeg. We're not even the first tour for this bullshit.

I just figured there was some kind of misunderstanding because I thought I could see him putting in the effort. Having remembered Nash trying to do too much out of a desire to do best by the team, I got it into my head that Laine was a similar case. That it'd be an indicator of Main Character Syndrome and a red flag frankly never even occurred to me as even remotely plausible. Seems like he's the extreme version of the pro athlete that's been a golden boy for literally his entire life. We're probably something like the 127th tour for this bullshit.
Said it before and I'll say it again, I think it reflects well on the room that they wanted him gone. For a while there I was worried he was a good fit in the room.

It wasn't that he didn't try hard, but what is he trying hard to do? Carry the puck through five guys while skating away from his linemates? On a team with one of the best forechecks in the NHL, it really was a step back in effectiveness and I'm a little surprised more folks didn't realize how badly it was going. He can try hard but if he's not trying hard to do what the team leaders want to do, because he's the main character in his own head, then it's not going to work.
I said this was how it was going to go - that people would start turning on our leaders on behalf of Laine. My only surprise was that we made that turn even when he was not a good player. That he was supposed to be an elite player was all it took for people to buy in to the idea and give up on everything else we had built.
Perhaps I should have been less surprised. We had a very vocal contingent of people here all during our four seasons as a competitive club clamoring for the club to blow it up and rebuild with draft picks, because our workmanlike team was too S.O.J. for them.
Well that room is long gone now. They tried to make Laine a fit by making the team less structured and demanding, so it was a fit for a while, and a fit for players like Roslovic and Boqvist too, just a losing fit.
We've got some good new leaders. Werenski has grown up. Monahan is a great role model. I love the character of most of our young guys. Marchenko for example I see as a really important player in the room, and I'd love to see him get an "A". We lost the old room but I see the new room building something new now.
It's all so wishy washy and we're not in the locker room with 'em, so it's easiest to just say "the room" instead of specific names even though some of the current players were also in that room.
Suffice it to say I'm glad he's gone and even more importantly I'm glad that it seems like they're also glad he's gone.
