Pre-Game Talk: Week of No More Tears for Mikko (Tue @ NYI, Fri vs STL, Sun vs PHI)

So…remember the familiar refrain “All the Avs need is average goaltending.”

Nope. Not true. They’re getting exactly that and still losing.
That was true in 2022 when our d core was

Toews-Makar
Girard-Manson
Byram-EJ

That’s miles better than what we have right now. We also had more defensively responsible forwards back then.

We need a new bottom pair, get Val and Landy back and trade for Nelson who’s a good defensive 2C. We’ll have close to the team we had in 22.

People were saying it this year too though.

Nope, the last couple of years it’s been obvious that goaltending wasn’t the only issue. Georgiev has sucked, but the team has also been bad defensively. Avs need to learn to play a more patient game.

When we’re good, we control the game where we don’t give up many shots or grade A chances, but when bad, there are brain farts and defensive breakdowns and easy goals against, which is on defense and not on the goalie

Bottom pair is absolutely an issue but Byram-EJ is a freaking bar that is going to be tough for any GM to match as a third pairing.,

I think the best we can hope for is a 4/5LD. I know a lot of us (at least I) was suckered into thinking the Avs were in on Seth Jones. I sure believed it, and considering how stagnated updates were on the trade, I kinda think there was probably something there that fell apart. I still have absolutely no clue how it would have worked out cap wise but it was a thrill for a about a half hour.

As a consoloation prize, how would folks feel if we tried to pry Romanov from the Islanders instead? I know Bednar has a problem with it, but the dude just seems to cleanly crush folks left and right but iIn 325 games he's only ammased 155 PIMs and has never been suspended. 53 PIMs is the most he's had in a season and that was in 21/22 with the Canadiens. He's also a career +35 for what that's worth.

Oh, he's also a left shot dman.

I just have no idea how hard we can f*** Lou over for him much Lou wants for him.

It was true when we were scoring 4+ goals every game. Now that we have the goaltending, the offense f***ing dried up. I'd love to see our average goals for pre and after Blackwood trade. Sigh.

Post-Blackwood3.21 [9th]3.22 [2nd]13.6% [29th]

A shocking mirror image, except the even strength/power play mix.

And yes, the power play is so rancid that Colorado's GF/60 is higher when you remove it from the equation. :help:

Our play went downhill the moment we got a better goaltender. :D When we could relax, the team relaxed..

One pic 5vs5 and one all situations including powerplay.

We got Wedgewood 1st of December so you can see the point when we improved our goaltenders.

Seriously, our team had to try so hard start to season just to survive or cover for the shitty goaltending. We were analytics wise pretty good first half of the year but goaltending failed us badly.

You can see our 5vs5 dipped almost immediately after we got a better goaltender. Then we survived a bit with better powerplay or powerplay was still working..now powerplay isn't saving us anymore so we are mediocre as ****.

For comparison sake let's check one of the best teams in the league: Carolina

Even Carolinas 5vs5 dipped at some point but they fixed their game and again they are going at the same pace, so it's normal to have some up and downs.

I added New Jersey as well. To see a bit more clearly how top teams perform. I mean models we would want to have. Carolina being the steady performer. They don't play their top stars that much. They like to roll four lines. I think that makes performance like this more sustainable because it doesn't rely on performance of couple players. System beats few good players. This isn't NBA where few good players can win it all.

That's why I believe, we have to build a super deep team which can roll four lines consistently meaning less tear from the regular season and then in playoffs you play the big guns as a weapon more if needed! The ultimate goal is to have those weapons available to you in playoffs. Now we don't, because they are exhausted just from the regular season and I don't see the next level playing from them like our Cup season because they are just wrecked. We are wasting our best weapons to regular season. That's a big mistake. I don't want my team to win regular season trophies. I want my team to win Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe award.

Regular season is about practicing and surviving to the playoffs where you should be in your best shape. The culmination of the season the peak point. Last few seasons I have seen one of the worst performing exactly in the playoffs. We aren't trending as a team to better during the season.

Yeah, if that PP could muster up say, 5 more goals than they have during this rancid stretch, we're probably looking at 3 additional wins.
