I'm not sure he was past for the period of time it would matter (where Edmunds could get into the play). Even if your back ankle is the only thing behind the line, you're still behind.

Why would he block him, he was running his route still? Maybe he followed him too long but he wasn't going to be able to cover both, and the WR was his responsibility.
