Week 2 is upon us in College Football, and they have finally wised up and ceded Thursday night to the NFL's opening night, and going to try to get people who don't feel like getting Peacock for Friday.
No AP-ranked teams up on Friday night, that'll wait for next week it appears, however BYU will play SMU - that's big 12 vs. ACC, and the big 12 team isn't the one from Texas. Duke will also play Northwestern in their temporary stadium.
Just two all-ranked matchups this week, Fox made their Big Noon pick this week their second overall pick in the network draft this year, and the hype is real as both Big Noon Kickoff and Coleege GameDay are in Ann Arbor where #3 Texas visits the Big House to play the defending national champions #10 Michigan, who had a slow game last week breaking in new starting QB David Warren against Fresno State in a game that was closer than the 30-10 score. Texas railroaded Colorado State 52-0. It seems like a mismatch at QB as Texas still has Qunn Ewers who of course played in the College Football Playoff last year. Michigan hasn't lost a regular season game since October of 2021, and haven't lost at home in front of a full crowd since November of 2019, but they are underdogs here as Texas is giving 7.5.
ABC's noon game will have #16 Oklahoma State hosting Arkansas. Oklahoma State has 7th year senior Alan Bowman in his second year as the starter, after not really getting on the field for Michigan in 21 or 22, and was a 3-year starter at Texas Tech before that, so that's a strange career path. Arkansas has Junior QB Taylen Green in from Boise State. Oklahoma State -7.5
Georgia Tech on the strength of their win over Florida State in Ireland, and win over Georgia State in Weeks 0 and 1, enter the rankings at #23 and will play their second conference game in Syracuse, as 2.5-point favorites on ACC Network.
#17 Kansas State heads to the Bayou to play Tulane on ESPN at noon as 8.5-point favorites.
And also James Franklin has called on not only the fans, students, alumni, but he says #8 Penn State is gonna need the faculty to show up as well, otherwise Bowling Green might just walk into Happy Valley and not only beat 34.5-point spread, but grab the W. Everyone needs to be up to the challenge of the Nittany Lions are going maintain their status as a B+ program.
The mid-afternoon slate is a bit light, the most compelling game might be the annual in-state Cy-Hawk rivalry, Iowa State visits #21 Iowa, a series that's usually close because Iowa never scores, and they're only 2.5-point favorites at home. This game will be on CBS.
Also, #11 Utah opens their Big 12 era by hosting Baylor on Fox. 7th year senior Cam Rising made it through last week's 49-0 win against Southern Utah only throwing 15 passes. Utes -15.
The SEC on ABC game has two unranked teams, South Carolina @ Kentucky, the home team favored by 10.
In Prime Time, #4 Alabama has the return date with South Florida, who gave them all kinds of fits last year in a driving rain storm. Jalen Milroe had an easy day last week, and isn't benched this week, so he isn't benched like he was last year. Bama -30.5.
#19 Kansas is a Big 12 team making a rare trip to a Big Ten school, they are headed to Champaign to play Illinois on FS1 at 7pm.
Big question with the night time lineup: who is going to win the ratings battle between NBC and ABC? NBC is prime time this week, they get the return matchup from the best game Coach Prime served over last year. Nebraska looks to get revenge for Colorado's raucous 36-14 blowout in Boulder. The Buffs have to make the trip to Lincoln last year, and I suspect Matt Rhule will have those kids much more ready to go. It's easy to forget given the nature of the spectacle this time last year, but despite losing the game, Nebraska ended up with a better record last year (5-7 vs. 4-8), all of those wins coming in the following 6 games before losing 4 in a row. Unlike last year, Nebraska has 5-star recruit Dylan Raiola, who flipped his commitment twice from Ohio State and Georgia opting for the chance to play (and probably transfer) for the Cornhuskers. Nebraska also favored by 7.5.
We're gonna find out a lot in the Duke's Mayo Classic, being played in neutral-site Charlotte. We will find out a lot about #14 Tennessee and #24 NC State, they will be on ABC at 7:30 with Rece and Kirk on the call. NC State had a breakout last year, but they were sleepy against Western Carolina last week, needing to pull out their 38-21 win into the 4th quarter. Tennessee had a much easier and fun time beating Chattanooga 69-3. We're going to get a good look at 2023 5-Star recruit Nico Iamaleava, who was named Cirtus Bowl MVP, beating Iowa 35-0, and see him get tested before Vols get into their SEC schedule. Tennessee -8.
ACC Network at night will have #25 Clemson trying to pick up the pieces of their blowout loss to Georgia last week, opening their home schedule against Appalachian State.
We have a long After Dark lineup, the largest in volume that I can remember. All games start between 10-11pm EDT
Boise State @ #7 Oregon, Oregon had to fight hard to keep Idaho at bay. Oregon -19.5 on Peacock (good luck there).
