Not that its relevant here, but why does a team have to let everyone know they are going for onside kick?

Because with the new rules, it's a penalty if it lands outside of the landing area and the ball is placed on the receiving team's 40 yard line.

It's like a FG where you don't have any on rushers. So, don't have to worry about getting it like 10 feet plus in the air within about 6 yards after you kick it.

Snap was just on the Chargers side of the field so, it's 50 yards plus 10 for the End zone and you don't need to go back 7 yards. So, a sub 65 yard kick without on rushers.

There’s been a few of them.

They are considered field goal attempts. I’m positive Aubrey will be allowed to try this before long.

Nowadays, a good number of K can hit from about 65 yards. Especially in a free kick situation with no rush and no snap. Plus you don't need to have the ball be 10 feet in the air at around 6-7 yards in front of you with no one to block it.

there's been a handful of attempts in recent years but they had all failed until yesterday
