I thought he looked great four years ago in Buffalo. Not future point-per-gamer good but he used his speed all over the ice and pushed play. I was surprised his game took such a dip.

He’s playing like a 4 million buck skater. Passes the eye test, strong on puck, makes video game moves and executes them, great vision, dangerous and accurate one timer on PP1, Letang and Crosby endorses him by feeding him the biscuit, dude has been liberated to discover his potential and make the big leap. Kind of like Bryan Rust’s out of nowhere emergence.
I see he has 2 goals and 10 assists in his last 35 games. Is it safe to say his first 30 games was a complete anomaly? Or did something happen?

He was the 2nd center on the Penguins and was moved back to wing. Same thing happened with Jared McCann last year.

Basically. His offensive role has been greatly reduced since Geno returned to the line-up. Also a decent bit of regression to the mean, namely on shooting...him playing so near a PPG was never going to be maintained over a full season, but he's also playing a completely different role than he was prior to Malkin's return. Incidentally Malkin's first game of the season was 4 days after I posted the op. Rodrigues was hitting 20 minutes a night pretty regularly there for a while, something he hasn't done since Malkin's first game back.

Seemed to slowly lose confidence in his game. Despite what some may consider good fancy stats when recently playing with Guentzel and Crosby (at least last I checked), he looked like he thought the game about a stride too slow for those two.
Rodrigues is the frustrating player who makes smart plays and creates chances, but he just doesn't seem to bury them. I guess we all saw what happened when he did. He doesn't really make mistakes either. The same mistakes the scapegoat on a team would. I agree with the other poster that he's basically a less skilled, more "jam" version of McCann as far as how his scenario played out. I'd really like to see him center his own bottom-6 line, but Crosby-Malkin-Carter-Blueger makes that unlikely.

I know I'm replying to a thread thats almost two years old but why is Evan Rodrigues wearing an Avs jersey in a post made in january of 2022? Am I missing something here?

Sometimes you just have to bask in the random glory that is a previously serviceable fourth liner finding a completely different gear amidst injuries and covid. Absolutely ridiculous season so far from a guy who made the league minimum as a 27 year-old last season.
Just stumbled on this thread while trying to google about his playstyle.
