Naturally our gutless media doesn't ask any questions about it to the players and especially Connor who is a brand ambassador for gambling.

Players literally have nothing to do with who is chosen for ad sponsors on jerseys. Why should they give their opinion? So self righteous indignant anonymous posters on hockey forums like yourself can melt down their keyboards writing how they should be up in arms against gambling ads just because that’s your opinion and how terrible they are as people?

Give your head a shake man.

Not a fan, but the logo was already on the helmets last year, so moving it to the jersey is like whatever. Isn't "Play Alberta" basically sponsored by the Alberta government itself?

I dislike jersey ads period.

I'm against gambling ads, that said I think some of the hysteria over it is performative. Hockey has had close marketing relationships with alcohol (beer and other) companies for decades and no one bats an eye lash over that even though alcohol almost definitely destroys more families and lives than gambling sites (look no further than last week's Gaudreau family tragedy).

For people who really don't want it, let the Oilers org know you won't be buying jerseys with that emblem on it. Easy peasy.

I could care less about gambling (if people want to live life on the edge, it’s up to them). The sheer look of ads on jerseys disgusts me though. Hopefully these new ad jerseys aren’t for sale in stores as I doubt any fans would buy.

Are you completely unaware Connor McDavid is a brand ambassador for MGM and their gambling business??? Have you not seen his 200 commercials endorsing gambling aimed at young men???

So players have nothing to do as well when they appear in several gambling adds? Its part of a larger problem with pro sports being in bed with gambling. Which is disgusting on so many levels. I don't blame Connor for the patches but I wish the NHL and pro players selected better merchandising partners.

Whether players want it or not they are role models and are already paid handsomely to wear that well. Encouraging gambling is about as bad as encouraging addiction. Oh wait, its the same thing.

17% of nhl teams have sponsorship from gambling joints
So if the most NHL member teams have lost any sign of integrity its just ok? Just accept it?

Its been wrong always for pro sports to prop up or be closely affiliated with gambling and its been the near death of some sports and leagues.

People forget there were times in boxing where people figured most matches were fixed and a lot of them were?

I'm citing this not for the article but the comment on it.

I think most comments and articles lightly touch on or completely miss the most likely outcome of legalized sports gambling...sports are popular in large part because the score, and even individual plays, are the result of honest competition...this makes the sport exciting because of its unpredictability...as sports betting grows the outcome becomes less about the result of competition and more about the betting line...therefore, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat is no longer trustworthy...I know sports are a business and business is about money...but...the competition to this point was believable...now...not so much...g.
Indeed the whole point of sporting competition is the viewer actually believing its competition. If it isn't, and instead its about the betting line there's no sanctity in outcome and less reason to watch.

Just think about Vegas Golden Knights. How many posters here (majority) have said at one time or another their results and what they get away with is rigged. Supported by NHL, supported by betting.

The difficulty is children don't get this choice. Its not up to them if mom or dad are spending all the families money on gambling and losing the house and lacking money for necessities. They are the unfortunate victims of this and have no say, and their lives are altered irreparably.

I got to see all the ravages of gambling and the harm it causes my whole career. Its as insidious as debilitating addiction for a subset of people. Some people can gamble responsibly. Not everybody can.

Gambling is not victimless. It never was. But even the gamblers are at greater risk. Problem gamblers 15X more likely to take their own life, and in most cases depriving families of mothers, fathers or spouses.

The worst thing is that online gambling is the crack cocaine of gambling. Its insidious and available anywhere all the time and with no checks and balances.

Then don't buy his jersey and don't cheer for him if you feel you strongly about it. Really that simple.

And no the media aren't going to start asking the questions, because the question will come right back to them why do they work for a company that has constant gambling ads

Im a grown man and Im not influenced by "I wanna be Connor McDavid when I grow up". My underlying point is that there are very young impressionable boys. No one has asked Connor this question of what impact he thinks it's having endorsing a company that supports gambling.

I don't see trout or ohtani doing this. I don't see Lebron or curry doing it.

Awful look for the NHL league that it's best player and greatest ever player are endorsing is a gambling house.

It's up to you to originate your own opinions. If you won't do it yourself someone else will do it for you. Outside influence is called advertisement amongst other less desirable words. We witness it increasingly by the day but when proprietors actively look for ways to make you despise their product they make the decision making processes uncomplicated and straightforward.

The NHL is the only pro league I follow. I don't even glimpse at the scores of any other sport. I couldn't name all the teams in any league nor tell you who the reigning champion is other than in the NHL and I grew up following MLB, the NFL along with other sports. I wouldn't watch a game now if someone paid me. It becomes vacuous stupid shit once you let it go and you're left strangely fascinated by those who are actively mesmerized by those leagues.

It has been that long and it's satisfying to quit watching when they f*** up one to many times. Rogers Place can become the concert venue connected to the casino.

After awhile gang gang can't tell you shit.

Your comment was “why the gutless media didn’t ask players opinions on the sponsor choice of the jersey.”

Your response which you bolded for emphasis (lol) - proves my point that a dumb question such as that only feeds the self righteous indignant anonymous posters - such as yourself - on hockey forums (and other social media forms) melting down your keyboards writing how McDavid is sponsored by gambling ads which goes against your moral high ground and personal opinion.

His question was why didn’t the media quiz the players - specifically McDavid - about the sponsor choice. My response was players have zero say in the matter and so any question posed to players is a lose lose to them. It feeds the self righteous trolls, that’s it.

Do I like the pervasive gambling ads? No. Do I like non stop Tim Hortons or Rybellsus ads? No. Do I care what sponsors players or teams have? No. Do I fault McDavid for cashing in on whatever sponsorship opportunities he decides to take on? No. Do I hold that hockey players must live some sort of Godly role model lilly white churchgoing life free of vice and sin? No. Do I care if you think they should? No.

In the end gambling is a vice. Parenting is far more important in determining what little Johnny or Jackie will become later in life than what commercials Connor McDavid appears in or what ads are unfortunately sewn on hockey jerseys.

Takes me about 3 months to even realize who ads are actually for nowadays. Then another month or two to wonder what the heck is that company. Car insurance, diabetic medication, pole stiffener etc...

I zone out so much during commercials when sports are on.

Couldn't tell you one commercial from Sunday and I watched football all day.

Yes, but its fair comment to note that Connor McDavid does do copious advertising for betting and that shizzle just ain't right. We mock Wayne Gretzky for falling down the gambling pit and in some of the same adds. Its not a great look on McD either. He can do what he wants and gets paid and he's a generally great role model. This just isn't the best part of his legacy. I don't blame him though. Sports if falling hard down this pit once again. Shame for us all that rather have integrity of sporting results.

Yes I stand by this the media should be asking about what this shows. What's the problem with that exaclty?

I never forget some people will look the other way for absolutely anything players do. It was embarrassing enough mcdavid is the face of sports gambling and now the team has a patch on each jersey? 100% he should be asked by the media about this.

What's next BET99 Centre ice with the Oilers logo superimposed?

Maybe it is moral high ground. A lot of little boys look up to these men and now they're making gambling endorsements their side business.

It’s fair comment but has nothing to do with Pavels soapbox speech that the gutless media didn’t ask players /McDavids opinion about the sponsor choice.

I’ve never seen Gretzky mocked for gambling and if I have I cannot remember it. He does seem to enjoy his booze though, annother vice.

And if he does who am I to judge. Last time I checked gambling is legal. Let him spend his money how he wants.

Do I like the marriage of sports and gambling? Nope. Can I do anything about it? Other that vote with my wallet? Nope. Do I gamble? Nope. Will I be influenced by a gambling commercial? Nope. Will my kids? Nope.

Your opinion of it however does not make it right or wrong for McDavid to have MGM as a sponsor.

I told you what the problem was - twice. But as usual you choose to not absorb what you read when you jump off your morality cliff and into the middle of a thread.

If you find it wrong that the Oilers chose a gambling sponsor that’s your opinion - full stop. If you’re so embarrassed by McDavid and by extension the Oilers then perhaps end your fan relationship with them. Otherwise you’ve made your point and enlightened us with yet another morality speech.

You want the sports media - sponsored heavily by sports gambling - to ask McDavid how he feels about a sponsor which he had zero choice over making. Makes zero sense.

Hopefully those little boys you are so worried about have parents with a brain that can teach them about the risks of gambling and other vices. Good parenting along with a hard won life lesson or two along the way usually is better than the morality police.

And if you’re so worried about public morality you can always move to Iran. They don’t allow any vices so you’re pretty safe over there.

Oh Gretz and his wife have been ripped extensively on gambling here and in Phoenix and you probably remember the stuff that was going on there with scumbag Rick Tochet, who wore dual hats as coach AND as owner of a betting site where Janet was betting on the sports. Was big news and nobody should forget it. All of Wayne, Janet, and Tochet were despicably involved. For many this wrecked any positive view they had on Gretz. Its a shame that a great player gets that as legacy instead of his illustrious career.

just saying. Sorry for the sidebar.
