He's looked slower this year for sure.
I'm concerned because I felt GREAT about last year's team at this point, I thought we were the best team in the league. I do not feel great about this year's team right now lol, and that was prior to this 5 game losing streak. We just look too old.
I still felt fine because I thought it was a perfect storm of illness, schedule, and fatigue that caused the uneven play, but we still mostly won in spite of it. Thought that a break was exactly what we needed and that we would come back rested and with more energy.
However, I managed to get fooled for about the 10th time with this group coming off of a break. This is just what we normally do - play like dumb, lazy, confused, entitled morons for no reason other than we had a bit of time between games. We have an addiction to lazy, entitled hockey and every extended break whether it's in season or off season effectively acts as a relapse.
Here are the laws of the land with this f***ing team, and nothing will ever break them:
Play after breaks, as described above.
Conventional wisdom does not apply. "They sucked last night, they'll come out hot tonight to respond; the other team is on the 2nd of a back to back and its their 3rd in 4, surely the Oilers will have the energy advantage; there's unfinished business, they'll start the season focused; they're only a point off the division lead, expect them to show up tonight, etc, etc." Basically any superlative that would logically result in good play from any other comparable team means that we're going to embarrass ourselves, and not seize the moment in any way whatsoever.
Games in select buildings and markets will result in D- efforts no matter what, no matter the quality of team. We usually find a way to no show every single season in Chicago, Montreal, and Columbus, and usually toss at least 6 points into the wind while doing it. This isn't to mention our complete inability to play competently against really any Eastern Conference opponent on the road. Off the top of my head, I think the Senators are about the only team we have any consistent success on the road against in the East. Normal teams recognize this and adapt, we just shrug our shoulders and wonder why it's all the same as last year.
Nothing can ever work all at once. Team stinks up front? Goalie is hot. Goalie stinks? Team is cooking in front of him. Leon is on fire? Connor is cold. Connor is on fire? Leon is cold. Pucks are going in? D can't do anything. D is steady? Can't score if our life depended on it. There will always be f***ing something that doesn't work.
There are likely more, but those are the big ones. Been this way through multiple coaches, multiple roster turnovers, etc. It's just what we do in Edmonton.
