How do you feel about Barzal for the 3rd pick?

Imagine thinking that this team was a young and up and coming team in 21-22 lol
It is genuinely amazing people watched this team from 2020-2022 and wanted to stay the course lmfao. 2018-2022 was the most miserable I have been as a fan because the team was completely directionless. If you want to watch a mediocre team with no chance of winning a title any time soon just watch a Reinsdorf team instead

DeBrincat had a $9 million QO for 2023, which would make him an Arb-Eligible RFA one year removed from UFA. He was in a prime spot to walk.

Hagel was also set to become UFA in 2024.

Hawks didn't have their own draft pick in 2022 (acquired Ottawa's for DeBrincat).

Staying the course was likely going to result in them Tanking for McKenna anyways, but with a significantly weakened prospect pool while continuing to ride the 2021-22 Hawks team and hoping a different coach could make them more mediocre.

Yes, and that was working out so well, what with our best center being Kirby Dach, our best winger being Alex DeBrincat, our best D being Seth Jones, and our best goalie being Kevin Lankinen.

What a roster Bowman was assembling! We would've had multiple cup final appearances, but Davidson f***ed it all up.
Toews and Kane suddenly wernt on the team, Fleury wasn't the goalie, etc, etc....

That's a great call. It's like some people on here would rather the Blackhawks be the Bulls where every year they go for it and end up 9th in their conference. Rather than strip it all down, endure some pain, and build a true contender.

Sure, it's possible to find gold late in the draft and build a contender while competing every year but when you have an aging and flawed roster that clearly isn't going anywhere, it makes more sense to embrace awful for a few years and reap the benefits of the high drafts picks and build on top of that than to keep mortgaging the future in hopes of getting a 7 seed.

What is with all the comparisons to other leagues?

People can be in favor of a rebuild, in favor of tanking, still in favor of moving on from Kane, Cat, etc. and still think Davidson is in over his head with a poorly designed rebuild.

May the ping balls drop well next spring. Danny Wirtz doesn't seem to care how much money anybody loses for him, talent and luck offset lots of bad.

a poorly designed rebuild.
The design is fine. Perfectly normal in fact. Stock up your assets with multiple years of high and excess draft picks. Then go from there. There is no other design that is as efficient or reasonably likely to result in a future period of contention than this.

The execution will remain to be determined. If you think the "design" is poor though, then I think you just don't pay attention to the NHL on a macro-scale. Look at PCA, a Red Wing fan that was bragging about how Yzerman got Seider when Bowman passed him up for Dach. Now he's out here worrying and acting like Bowman had the team on track for contention with a bunch of players that would all on UFA contracts in present day and weren't even close to competing when they were all here. You can tell he's getting nervous, his boy Yzerman who he was gushing about for drafting Seider looks like he may have flubbed it up by taking the Wings out of their tank too soon and putting a cap on their level of prospects when they still need multiple guys to come through and their 1C continues to Age. And then over here, if the Hawks go for the tank again and do actually get McKenna (unlike Bedard, he would get to come in at the end of the tank period when the Hawks have a stacked prospect/ELC player pool) then they are probably the team best situated to run the "next generation" of NHL when the teams like Florida/Edmonton/Vegas/Colorado/Tampa have all fully run their course back down the standings. And even if it's not McKenna specifically but someone else that is still very good, the Hawks will be in a very good spot.

Sure bad things can happen, the draft picks can bust, the one that don't bust may not peak as high as people would like, the Hawks can mismanage the D and end up sending the wrong ones out the door, they could sign the wrong UFA that messes up the cap. A lot can go wrong, and at the end of the day, there's 1 winner and 31 losers, but the Hawks are on a very shortlist to be a very strong contending team into the 2030s the way it's all shaping up.

How do you do a rebuild differently?

A rebuild is trading all your worthwhile assets for draft picks/prospects, waiting for them to mature, and finding out who to build your team around. Is their another version of a rebuild I'm not familiar with?

Jason Robertson if he was truly available I wouldn't hesitate to trade #3 for simply because of his upside and age
And then what do you do when you realize Jason Robertson has one year left on his deal, is in same spot as DeBrincat was in for Ottawa ($9.3 million Qualifying Offer, arb-eligible, giving him all the leverage to force his way to UFA) and decides he doesn't want to sign? Suddenly you're flipping a 3rd overall pick for a 30th overall pick to the team he is willing to extend with and 1 year of Jason Robertson....

At this stage, when it comes to acquisition of available prime players, the rich get richer. Jake Guentzel wants to sign with Tampa, not with Chicago. Probably similar deal with Robertson. The competing teams don't care at all about moving their 26th or later overall pick and can have a higher likelihood of re-signing those players. That is why you stockpile assets.. so you can fast forward however many years, and now you're the team that already has good prime aged players that other prime aged players want to come play with.

Robertson has one year left on his contract PASS , Nill trying to peddle him so he can chase Marner . I'd rather get Seguin with a few draft picks , 2/2nds &3rd stapled to him .Stay the course on the rebuild !!!

It should have been evident that after Nashville tied us to the whipping post in 2017 that is
was time for a rebuild.

Robertson is a better version of Strome who also crumbles in the playoffs. Easy no.

Robertson is someone who Porter Martone could become in a dream scenario. Robertson has scored over 100 points once and over 40 goals twice. Pretty strong showing in past two post seasons also.
