He literally gave away a handful of successful players by non-tendering them. Strome is on track to be the caps leading scorer for the second year in an row. Even Pius Suter is doing well in Vancouver.

I mean ... WTH?

It is ridiculous to simply reply "but der rebuild." OR "he's not a Davidson type of player." Ridiculous.

I wonder what you would get for Strome today?

I am NOT advocating firing the guy - I'm saying he's making mistakes (and NO, getting a third for a Hall isn't a mistake).

No one misses Pius Suter, let's be real. We have 10 of him on this team.

Suter was non tendered when Bowman was still the GM.

He tried trading Strome to literally everyone for literally anything and found no takers. Is he worth something now? Sure, but he wasn’t at the time and doesn’t fit the long term team identity. I’m really not sure how Davidson is to blame for an entire league full of GMs wanting nothing to do with giving up value for Strome

This is an excellent point. Connor McDavid is older now than Jonathan Toews was during the 2015 cup run. We really have no idea what the league's landscape will look like by the time the Blackhawks should be opening their contention window.

If you're going to criticize Davidson, focus on the draft and his asset management as those are the actual important steps of the rebuild and there is plenty still in question about what he's done there

Stuff like the AA contract is total nothing. It was a cap floor move. He's buried in the AHL and the contract runs out this year. Unless you're Danny Wirtz wondering why you're paying a minor leaguer $4M a year, zero reason to give a f*** about that deal.

I don't wanna hear about Strome either. It's great that he's turned himself into a decent pro. When the Blackhawks cut bait his career high was a Kurashevian 51 points after several years of playing with Kane and Debrincat. Probably best for both sides to move on when they did even if it sucks they got nothing for him

The way I look at the last years of the Hawks dynasty and following was the management didn't anticipate (understandable) the early decrepitude of the showtime Hawks core.

More than a handful of players came to the Hawks, didn't push the needle, and then went elsewhere to win cups (lmao even) (Kempny, Rutta, Forsling). You could say the management was doing a lot to succeed by identifying players suitable for championship teams but trying to patch together the showtime Hawks was beyond the skills of any management team.

Heck, to be morose about it you could say that Bickell's sad story was an early harbinger about how things would work out. Hawks fans even got to witness too-soon-old Seabrook and JT stumbling or weasing through shifts (sad). Heck johnny wherever he is had to stomach being replaced (eventually) at captain by contemporary Foligno for his "veteran leadership".

What will the Hawks hfboard do if ole 17 etches his name on the cup this year? A precedent has been established . . .

In hindsight, it would have been good to sign D. Strome to his qualifying offer.

As it turned out, he was an Arb-Eligible RFA close to being UFA-eligible coming off a bridge deal. By not qualifying him, he became a UFA and the entire League could have signed him to any contract. He ended up signing a 1 year 'prove it' deal with Washington for less than the value of his Qualifying Offer. The range of outcomes could have seen him banished from the NHL entirely or getting a real UFA-level contract afterwards. As it turned out, he played well and got the outcome.

It would have been nice to turn him into a 2nd round pick, but he was a 0.617 (50 points per 82) PPG player the last three seasons in Chicago (22-24) that didn't play good defense and nobody with aspirations wanted him at the time. Props to him for finding a good fit in Washington.
