We Have A Gm Problem

We will see with the goalies, but I think we have likely already seen their best performance that we will get out of them this year.

Donato, Murphy, Hall, Smith, and maybe even Mrazek could all be dealt. Any replacement we put in the lineup in their place will be a worse player. It's going to be someone like Joey Anderson or Guttman called up for them. They're not NHL quality players.
Donato - doubt it, they probably extend him
Murphy - doubt it, still another year, he's hurt again, and worth more to team than what they will get in a deal
Hall - big meh
Smith - not consequential in anyway
Mrazek isn't going anywhere.

We will see.

15 games between now and the break for this dumb tournament, and 10 of those against playoff teams.

Hurricanes x2
Avalanche
Oilers x2
Panthers
Wild
Lightning x2
Knights

This goal differential is going to be pushing -100 by February.

The Hawks need to stop finishing in the bottom of the standings and they also need to play the kids even if they are terrible regardless of whether they're ready for that role, and they also need to pick up every 23 year old that's getting outcast even if they suck and give them 25 games on the top line, because they're a free asset, and they need to not play too defensively so they can score more goals, and they need to not get dominated every game.

...Fundamentally, it's just a bad team that needs another high draft pick. You can't do all those things at once.
You summed up the counter argument. Your argument is "The Blackhawks prospect pool must be good and worth the wait since they are ranked highly and generally liked by prospect-watchers so the wins will come, even though the forwards all project to be middle six at best while the best defenseman should be fine because he was drafted second overall. No further action is necessary; KD can take a nap until the draft."

This conversation has gone way off the rails lol guys not a savior he just can rip pucks and can't skate, thought it was worth the claim for a team that can't score. If he sucks you just waive him and if the Kings take him back cool and if they don't you just have an AHL guy who can score. I don't see the downside.

One last thing: Davidson made MANY choices with the intention to be competitive this year, right?

How's that working out?

Does he get any criticism for that or can he hide under the rebuilding skirt?
No he f***ing didn’t lmao. Since when is signing Teuvo and then a bunch of retirement home players in Maroon, Smith, Brodie trying to be competitive 🤡🤡🤡

If you whole heartedly thought KD would even want this team to be competitive and force speed up a rebuild after 2 years of starting it then you’re probably the type of person warning labels on coffee are meant for.

listen its absolutely fine to rebuild and tanking is only way to truly do it. My main point is KD is failing to at least take risks on some young guys who need change of scenery and if they pan out would be part of the future plan. Guys like Foligno, Maroon, Hall, Smith, Brodie, Bertuzzi do not accomplish that and will be gone in 1-2 yrs. Its KD reluctance to roll any kind of dice to maybe hit on a guy in need of change of scenery that pisses me off

I think Davidson has a much cleared vision of the team that he wants to build through the draft than he does "in the now". There are some seriously frustrating vets like Taylor Hall, Brodie and Seth Jones as well as youngsters like Reichel and Kurashev. Who could have predicted that Kurashev would completely drop off the map like he has? I think some of the blame has to fall on the coaches.....if vet's suck, sit them down or reduce their minutes.

The team was supposed to be better this year and Luke Richardson getting fired mid-season is proof of that. They tried to be better. Delusional or not.
he said more competitive and we have been. if you look at the metrics we are quite a bit better. goal tending and shooting % are the 2 things we are worse at. everything else has been from bottom 2-3 to bottom 7-12. LR played a style that was not going to win you many games. We could not score with him as coach so we lose 3-1 compared to the new coach we lose 5-3 (which is still a loss but is way better for development)

In other words, you're philosophy of rebuilding is showing no patience at all. Look around the league and count how many teams have succeeded trying to rebuild on the fly as quickly as possible.

The veterans that KD brought in are merely fill-ins (I didn't like a few of them but hopefully are role models for the kids, nothing more). Those spots will open up for prospects when they are ready. The jury is still out on KD but your assessment is premature, IMO.
This is a strawman.

My argument has always been that Chicago would have been better off keeping younger players like Hagel and Strome than doing a 100% burn it to the ground rebuild.

It is too easy to fall into the abyss of perpetual rebuild and now Chicago is willingly there. Winning is about skill and belief. Chicago is an atheist hockey team right now. Changing that will take years.

I've never encouraged a lack of patience, I'm completely discouraged by the lack of signs of progress. Chicago MUST take chances on players like Kiliyev, Askarov, Tolvanen, Kakko, etc.

You have to get players and hope from anywhere and everywhere when you're a black star.

Sure, sure.

To be clear, competitive does NOT mean making the playoffs. It means NOT being the worst team in the league.

What did Kyle from Chicago say? If only there were quotes:

Kyle from Chicago:
"We want to take the next step here and progress,” he told reporters. “We don't want to finish where we finished this year moving forward. That's not what we're looking to do anymore … That can't happen again. We need to start moving up and onward.”

There needs to be progression,” Davidson continued. “I don't know how many points or standing slots that is, but we can't finish second(-to) last in the league. I think the standard has to be raised. The expectation has to be raised. Through that, accountability will be raised. That's the nature of the path we're on. Eventually, we have to start making positive steps, and I think we've reached that point.

“Im not saying that we're going to be competing for playoffs or Stanley Cups or anything this next year, I don't know how realistic that is -- it's the best league in the world, best players and best teams in the world, and so to say we're just going to improve a whole great deal in the standings is difficult, but we need to be better. And it's time to take a step forward.”

He's failing by his own standard.

Regarding culture - Chicago is the worst team and the locker room is apparently lost & confused.

Regarding Kaliyev, the chance he becomes a "guy" is TINY, but he's got talent. Who cares if it results in Smith or Maroon waived - we know what we have with those guys - NOTHING. Regarding their great contribution to team "culture" see above.

I'll take a 5% chance in Kaliyev working out vs 0% chance with half this roster.

All Davidson has shown is the aptitude to light things on fire. Any one of us could have lucked into drafting Bedard and gotten a top prospect at #2.

He's done nothing but acquire draft picks and then give them away, overpay for inconsistent players, and non-tender actual NHLers (like Washington's current leading scorer).

Don't patronize me with this "we're in a rebuild" nonsense. Rebuilding means actual building - see the sharks. Chicago is currently on fire - theyre not building anything but more ash.
Save it for AM sports radio dude. You’re complaining just to complain.

I'm sorry, you can't be the worst team in the league and point to some stats to claim Chicago is more competitive. They're just losing in different ways; that's variety, not being competitive.

I'm complaining bc the team sucks and there are reasons for it and I'm explaining some of the reasons for it.

Also, this is an internet message board for the Blackhawks? Would you rather discuss travel tips and tricks?

Totally agree that you can't be passive forever. And I have doubts if Davidson is the correct GM to move from passive to active or just a caretaker to sign placeholders, tank and let scouts make draft picks. Don't care that much if Davidson is the GM or not in a few years.

Claiming Artur Kalieyev off waivers is not part of "some of the reasons". Hawks have about 19 healthy forwards that could plausibly be in a lineup right now between real NHL players, fringe/borderline NHL players and prospects that warrant a look. Adding a 20th (fringe NHLer) because he's a "free asset" does nothing no more than wondering if maybe Marcel Marcel will turn into a 60 point power forward somehow.

Mrazek isn't going anywhere.

1) Donato extension would be f***ing dumb as hell as he will want term and likely major overpayment
2) What worth does Murphy bring to this team? Seriously what does he f***ing do to warrant holding onto him any longer? His ass should have been gone years ago
3) Agree goodbye Taylor for whatever
4) Smith blocks a guy like Slaggert from NHL roster. Slaggert should be up here not in AHL
5) Sadly agree, We blew it extending him and he has come back down to earth with a vengeance

Well I mean if you're rebuilding through tanking then I would argue the drafting part is the most important.. and Doneghey reports to Davidson. Davidson would be evaluating the scouts and selections or helping make the selections. The guy doesn't come off as passive at all in the videos or content they release of draft time. Seems like he's right in the middle of it all. He's driving the bus through one of the most important times. He's no lame duck.

Just meant passive in the more fundamental day to day of GM duties in terms of signing/trading/roster moves. I know the draft process is a bit more involved than just "EA Sports auto sim 5 seasons"

Yup. And I see people keep penciling in big ticket UFAs in our future top six and the odds of someone like Marner getting to that point AND signing in Chicago are so so slim. Cant bet on that and need to start taking some swings on players that need a change of scenery.

Theres 4 ways to get players for our future. Draft, sign, trade and waivers and you really have to make sure you maximize all 4 avenues and so far KD seems locked in on 2/4

If anything, having so many forwards is a bit of a knock on this past offseason's strategy. Why pick up Craig Smith and Pat Maroon if that means less ice time for players like Reichel, Kurashev, and Dach? I don't mind the idea of Maroon since he seems to have helped Reichel a bit, but there's also Martinez and Brodie who are head scratching additions. That amount of money spent on net nothings in free agency couldn't have been used to bring in even one player that moves the needle just a little bit going forward? Who would fit the team better, Craig Smith or Kakko? Jake Walman or Martinez? The problem with waiting for teams to unload players in-season is that it makes hard to create hype and buzz for ticket sales in the pre-season. Those acquisitions are all part of creating the illusion of progress as evidenced by how the pregame show of game one this year has to have something like that to talk about and sell the fans.

we were negative -111 and we are on pace for about -75 so we would improve by 35 goals that is fairly substantial improvment

There is no reason to extend Donato... for the love of christ KD please don't do that.

He's a good soldier, but he doesn't need to be part of the future. Get a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him and give Reichel, Slaggert, or even Kurashev those minutes for the last 30 or so games.

-111 is the 8th worst since 2000. Climbing from the bottom of the Mariana Trench to somewhere near the edge of it is still the ocean floor.
