That's literally what it means to deflect the puck lmfao - he did not have possession of the puck and to say otherwise is obscene.

The kicking rules and the way they are enforced (or not) are ridiculous. Never know if it's a goal or not. "Distinct kicking motion" is just way too open for interpretation.

EDIT: and in this case they even rule it a distinct kicking motion and still come up with a way to make it a good goal... which just adds another level of ridiculous.

The NHL rulebook says a kicked puck cannot be ruled a goal even if a defending player deflects the puck into the net. The ref made a new rule up on the spot saying the goalie hit the puck into their own net

They said he “put it into his own net” i.e shot it in.

If someone clearly kicks a puck and an opposing defender shoots it into his own net it’s a goal.

They essentially ruled that Hellebuyck had possession and put it in. Otherwise they just got it wrong based on the written rule. Do we seriously think he has control over that puck? What in the actual f***.

The more I think about it, there's no way that's an honest call. The ridiculously long review was the league scrambling to find a way to allow the goal. They're having nightmares of a Jets Leafs final.

Their ruling is that Hellebuyck "propelled" the puck into his own net, not that he "deflected" it.

I think its pretty clear that Hellebuyck swipped at puck and got it wrong. It wasn't deflected. Good call for goal.

If it is kicked it doesn't matter if it goes off the goalie in any way.
