Richards Dwight king'd the pass. He fumbled the pass instead of shooting off the pass.

The pass didn't connect cleanly. Even if it had Richards would have had to score with Elliot a foot in front. There wasn't any Kings available for a rebound. Richards, being the high IQ guy that he is did what what the ebst chance at an score. Elliot was now out of position and if it gets to where it needs to there is the best chance at at an initial goal or a quality rebound chance by Kings own shot. That's the way I saw it at least.
