I don’t doubt it regarding Villardi. But there is alleged playoffs version of PLD that can be a totally different beast. I hope we don’t see that version.
It's happened what once in 5 post seasons, and we're going to have to define beast. If by beast you mean he played like a top line player then sure, but he's never had a McDavid, Draisaitl, Kucherov, MacKinnon, or even Eichel like performance in the post season.

Defense and structure are a coaching issue, flat out. Tippet was bad at it, Woodcroft was better but still leaky, Knob seems to be better than Woodcroft at it. It's why Winnipeg can go from a mediocre defensive team under Maurice, to the best defensive team under Bowness. It's why Deboer makes the finals seemingly with every new team he coaches, regardless of their defensive players. It's why Boston can lose Chara, Bergeron and Kreijci and not miss a step.

This Oilers team does seem to be a bit more mature and defensively sound than previous iterations- top 5 in xGA, 10thth in GA over the course of the season (17th last year), so that's a positive. This team's structure will be key in determining how far they can go. Almost every team in this year's playoffs is incredibly structurally sound, especially in the west. Dallas, Vegas, Colorado, even Vancouver. We have to win the coaching and defensive battle to go all the way, something we didn't do last year. Cassidy ate Woodcroft's lunch last year.

The structure is much more sound, but two Achilles heels still exist as far as defending is concerned.

1 - our rush defense still stinks. Struggle as a team to recognize danger, struggle for each defender to take the right guy, and struggle to not puck watch if the puck ends up behind the net creating tap in looks for the trailer screaming into the slot. It's likely not something that we can fully resolve in time to cover this off, but managing the puck like non-morons at the opposition blue line is the easiest way to not have to worry about this.

2 - panic passing around the walls in the d zone when we are getting pressured low. When the puck is on the wall we get stuck, panic, rim it, then walk ourselves into a situation where we're getting buried for the entirety of the shift and maybe even multiple shifts. We absolutely have to keep the puck off the wall. When we're getting pressured heavily the instinct can't be "rip it up the wall," it needs to be to either skate it out, and if you don't have time to skate it, punt to the neutral zone and get the puck back defending their possession.

Not bad considering
This past year showed production for both.

yeh I’m probably overrating that. Should just take the kings fans word for it that he blows.

LA played the 1-3-1 when they were down by 4 goals last year.
One of the reasons Mclellan is fired. He also again had a team shooting the puck in regularly on the PP. I never miss Mclellan much. If the Hiller wants a job he better learn not to just continue with everything McLellan did. We might see some surprises and wrinkles. Kings would be stupid to just be reliant on 1-3-1 with the goaltending they have.

My retirement plan is Latin America. You can live like a king with a 2k pension. My dad sold his place here and moved to Portugal after he retired. Best decision he's made in a long time. Food is cleaner and you're more active and outside more so his health has drastically improved compared to what it was like here plus his pension goes much farther.
Just an opinion but just get a lot with or without house and grow food here. We're 40% food self sufficient just doing standard gardening on a fair sized city lot with a house that takes up only 25% of the lot in footprint.

Been articles and studies lately that are going back to old school. People getting into gardening for health, vitality, getting better vegetables, fruits, and improving their health. Medical studies recommending what was always common knowledge. Not only do you get teh exercise you eat much better. You can do any of that right here. With two freezers and a dark cellar room we never run out of our own grown produce. Still have about 50 freezer bags of produce and raspberries we haven't gotten through. The latter being some of the best antioxidants you can get.

people would be amazed how much you can grow with Some basic garden plots, raised beds, container gardens and some vertical gardening. Ours summers are fantastic for growing. We even do grapes as I've stated.

Go Oilers! The team with the better goaltender will win the game and the series. Pretty f***ing simple lol.

Always a tough series. Kings hang around always and most of the playoff games we've played are 1 goal games. Half last year went to overtime, including that classic game 4 comeback.
Also, biased yes, but refereeing can be the great equalizer and generally favors LA. They wouldn't sniff Game 1 last year without it. And Game 3 without the LA high stick that didn't get called on the OT winner.

In any case, this match up is always too close for comfort. Even the '97 and '98 Oilers took out 100% favorites those years in Dallas and Colorado. I see similarities/comparables there, where instead we seem to be unanimous favorites and LA as an underdog can grind out 6 or 7 game series decided on a coin flip. I will always be nervous until the series-deciding buzzer.

We have to show up 60 minutes and super disciplined. Came into this year with that Cup or Bust mantra and stumbled horribly out of the gate. Hopefully, that adversity was humbling to the point where the boys have the right mindset to get the job done.
Starts with one series at a time though. We bring our best, we should win. Let's go, Oilers!

Big difference there was in goal. In both '97 and '98 Cujo stood on his head for large chunks of the series and stole games. In '98 he had shutouts in Game 6 and 7 and only allowed 1 in Game 5. In '97 the Stars peppered us in Game 7 down the stretch of that game, but he was unreal there too.

To win as an underdog team you absolutely need top tier goaltending. I'm having a hard time thinking of any examples of a major upset where goaltending wasn't a major part of the story.

PLD is so heavily critiqued by some factions and as if he's a "team cancer" and yet the Kings have had him playing most of season with their young players. Thats why he doesn't have startling stat lines. Kopitar and Danault are getting the plum topsix players. PLD has been taxed with useless players like JAD (now gone) Kaliyev(too useless to even use) and Grundstrom (same). It was odd Kings were even still trying to make these players happen, now they have given up on all. Unlikely to even see those guys.

PLD though the Kings realize is responsible enough to be raising young players and if they didn't think so they wouldn't be doing it. Whenever he's with Byfield its another gear clicking and he has someone to work with. PLD got first assist this season on 3 different first NHL goals and was the one grabbing the puck for each of those young ones. Such a bad attitude..;) Stoll doing the Kings between periods is a fan of the quiet role thats been given PLD. He's pretty positive of what he will bring for the Kings. I respect Stolls opinion.

Even with lower pts this season PLD has been strong on boards, relatively strong getting and skating pucks out and in playing a responsible game. The minus on the season is due to the awful players he's had to play with. Last dozen games he's around +10, and last 20 games starting to hit some more pts. LA fans are heavily critical even by Oilers standards and don't have a clue what PLD even does. They don't recognize his board play, transition, work on breaking pucks out. these are the quiet parts of the game you have to key on to realize. A lot of what Henrique or Nuge would do here.

The deep problems in LA this season was Kempe, Fiala production was majorly down, all of Kaliyev, Grundstrom etc didn't produce anything and they've had to weed out the rot that just wasn't doing anything or going anywhere. With Arviddson back they like running just 11 forwards.

Nah. The man had no reason to say what he did yesterday other than cover is own ass going forward. And I've been giving him benefit of the doubt all season long. You don't disclose an injury to the press. What he did was selfish and on purpose. It was a deliberate attempt to proactively generate excuses for his shit play and lack of ice time.
This. Gregor just talked about it. Kane is making excuses for getting bumped to L4. Selfish prick.

Win or lose this guy will get moved this summer imo.

Watch Kane get a hat trick tonight and all our thoughts are rendered stupid. just jk around but odder things have happened. Maybe we're playing 4D chess and shaming some more production out of him. ;)

In anycase I dreamed Kane scored tonight so theres that. heh

In the posting business this is known as creatively covering all your bases..

You think PLD is on the 4th line to help young players? Pretty sure his demotions have been directly linked to being a lazy POS

I drafted Clarke in my pool and would often visit their GDTs. Consensus is he's lazy as sh**

Not sure where you came up w/ your theory tho

I just texted a buddy the same thing.

I have about 3.5 hours until I can justifiably leave this place, but mentally I exited at about 9:30 this morning.
That's diehard!

I check in once in a while during the day out of boredom. But can't justify getting that mentally involved in something completely out of my control.

Try watching the games sometimes. I see 30-40 Kings games a year. In and around that. PLD has not been a problem and its been 3rd line he's on. Try to be at least remotely accurate.

Its certainly not a demotion. In coming years you'll see PLD up on top line, top PP topsix as Kopitar is retired. That was the whole thinking all along. This is just PLD first season with the Kings. people overreacting to numbers. Guy can play.

Remaining Kings fans are generally clueless. I like Clarke a lot btw. Could be real good.

jebus people on this board think Drasaitl is a lazy fill in the blanks half the time. Never go on whats boards say on hfboards. lol

I see Holloway is in tonight, good for him.
There was a poster who said he would bet Anything that Holloway wouldn’t play game 1
Lmao, good thing he didn’t bet his life.
