I think it could be fun to keep a thread of all the things you noticed/realized about players you otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to watch often.

E.g.

- Doughty is the real deal
- Matthews is better than I thought
- Sedins still got it
- Duchene has amazing edgework
- Etc.

...... doughty is the real deal ? Were you sleeping the last few years / didn't watch the Olympics?

Well suprise yes this year's norris winner is okay.

- Duchene has amazing edgework

Duchene wasn't for his first couple seasons but that guy's a beast along the boards and especially behind the net. He's great at peeling off the wall and makes so many good plays but it was depressing last season to see him make passes to a declining Iginla and Comeau or Grigorenko who can't bury those. The guy has never had good sustainable wingers for a single season of his career and still has had generally good point production despite **** coaches offensively at the NHL level. MacKinnon isn't as well-rounded of a player yet or as consistent but he was even better and stronger than Duchene along the boards because of his tank-ish build, he just didn't sustain it and I don't think he has the same playmaking vision.

As for the Sedins, those guys were never fast to begin with so I'm not sure why people think they'll decline just cos they're getting older, they'll still play at a high level and be 50ish point scorers at worse which isn't bad because 50 is the new 65.

McDavid has crazy outside speed. I don't get a chance to see much of him from the east coast.

I'm realizing that it is dumb to try and draw a conclusion based on a handful of exhibition games.

Oh except that Just Abdelkader shouldn't be on team USA.

McDavid is fantastic
I am still confused about Eichl and what kind of player he is. He intrigues me greatly.
Backstrom seems to be amazing as "the guy" even though I thought he was primarily a feeder to Ovechkin.

Canucks fan - it feels good to have Marchand on your team but I would still beat the living sh** out of him

McDavid is fast
Scheifele is actually really good
Barkov will be the best forward in the world
Kuznetsov and Panarin are both unreal

Frolik deserves better linemates/deployments than he's getting

seeing Tavares in-person for the first time in a few years tonight, i realized how much stronger he is on his feet and how much stronger his skating is. his stride in open ice, or his ability battling in the corner, he's just seemed so much more balanced. he's awesome
