WC: May 3 GDT - USA vs. Latvia

Full props to Latvia. Great effort from them, but also a decent game from the U.S. Outshot the Latvians by a two-to-one margin and received some quality goaltending from Ty Conklin. The game against Canada will be pretty interesting.

I read Mike Modano left the ice with a shoulder injury. Does anybody know anything about this? I'm actually surprised Mike hasn't recorded a point yet. So far Weight has been the difference maker on offense, displaying puck moving skills and setting up Mark Parrish for 3 goals in two games.

Unless the Canadian defense starts to pick up their game that could very well happen. Weight and Modano always seems to pick up their game against Canada

Modano was out for a bit. He returned to the ice later in the game. Probably just a stinger or something no too serious.

I'm with you on that Wilka. If Canada's defensive core keeps playing like they have then we've got this game wrapped up!

Well how has our defense been playing? I haven't been able to see any of the games so I don't know. I do know Canada's blueline has been less than spectacular, only because I've read so much about it on tsn.ca, SlamSports, the Globe and Mail, etc. True, Canada has won two games, but Jovo, Philips, Regher, and Souray have been sloppy. Can somebody tell me how well Team USA's defense has been performing and if anyone has stood out in particular? I know Roach and Gill are both +4, but that number has certainly been inflated by the 7-0 romp over Slovenia.

The American Defense is the best in the tournament (statistically-wise), we'll see how it performs against the vaunted Canadians
Hmmm...both teams have played Latvia and Slovenia.
US has given up 33 shots, Canada has given up 37 shots.
Are American fans really hanging their hats on "superior defense".
We'll see on Thursday, I suppose...

Oh man... Gotta praise Latvia now. They were awesome! I just loved the way they played. Great fans! Best in the whole world right now, no doubt.

Too bad the ref denied those 2 goals. The first was actually quite a clear call but the 2nd he should have checked out.

Go Latvia!

What does "Jumalauta!" means? My granny often says that to me :dunno:

It's an abrreviation of two words originally.
Jumala - god
auta - help

so literally its supposed to mean "god help me" , but erh.. in reality, the abbreviated word means more like "god curse it" - except with the curse being a similar word starting with the letter d.
and take out the spaces.

great game, latvians unfortunate not to win it.

usa turned it on at about the halfway mark and deserved the win on that dominance they showed then. Weight in particular seemed to be an immovable force in front of the net. His line was always always dangerous. Modano looked like he hasnt found his groove yet.

that stastny kid, looked completely useless.

early on I thocuht that Conklin was having a stinker, at least the first part of the game he was in dire straights - but at the end he pulled it together and became unbeatable.

this article says he will be available for the game against Canada.
No, from what I understand, you can only add players once the first round is completed. That also explains why Obšut didn't play in Slovakia's second game.

That would be true if the US had a full 23 men roster. However, there are only 22 players on team USA's roster, so they can add a 23rd at any time.

I wonder why Gill did not play PK when Latvia scored. There is no way in hell that Latvian guy would have gotten even close to the puck if Hal had been there. He is great on PK and especially in keeping the front of the net clear from opponents.

Great game by Latvia..that one goal should have been checked from videoref. It looked like it was in.

Ok, missed that part.

Goddamn(it) is probably the more correct translation. Btw, I noticed recently that this was bleebed out on Conan. I thought this was a fairly mild curse word.

I disagree on Stastny. He had three excellent scoring chances and showed alot of speed.

what is, goddammit?

it's the religious, blasphemous thing i think. they used to (and probably still do, i just haven't heard it lately) bleep out the "god" part but leave in the "dammit" on radio and tv

since I haven't seen any of the games i can't say anything definitively, but there is the whole "quality of shots" angle to look at things with. if canada is only allowing 18-19 shots per game but giving up really good scoring chances when they do allow a shot, that's not really good defense. if the US is allowing approx the same or less and is limiting the good scoring chances, that is good defense.

but since I haven't seen the games, I don't know. just pointing out there is more to it than shot totals
