the thing about powerplays is you need different looks for different PP formations. Some PPs you need to be aggressive against. Some you want to have it quickly collapse. Not all PPs stack two players in front of the goalie.
Totally agree and why the flack that Quinn is getting (& the rest of his staff) IS warranted at this pt

I have been in his corner thinking he would get some experience and start making adjustments... he hasn't and as you point out if you practice 1 type of PK and the team you're facing doesn't play it, then you NEED to adjust.

You can't cry and say "UNFAIR!!! We don't practice that PK! WHAAAAAAAAAAA!"

Big boy league... time to man the f*** up

The high forward pressure also needs to get a turnover once in a while to be successful. Mika and Buch have been close a couple of times but no puck luck and the puck takes a bad bounce and the forward(s) end up overeager and overskating and chasing the play

I'm more bothered by how Buffalo was able to go to the well with the same play and get a billion SOG.

Theres enough tape out there to know whats coming. Its another level of unpreparedness/inability to adjust which is plaguing this team under this coach.

Two people pointed out it was a bit of a shitty way to go about it. At that point why not admit "Ok maybe my default was to be a bit of an ass"

And offended? I pretty much handled this with kid gloves...You have to be really sensitive to think someone just bringing something up and pointing out an alternative is some kind of big "wow so offended" issue lol.

Not to mention it's kind of flawed to say "It doesn't matter if I could've done something better. As long as one person didn't say anything". Some people avoid conflict, some people don't even notice it. When someone does notice...actually two people...it should tell you something about your approach. Not like it's this horrible thing, you just came off kinda shitty

Man you realllllly have a bad habit of attaching intent to my words.

Yes I could have phrased it better and yes you're being overly sensitive and clearly this has bugged you enough to post about it, TWICE. No need to play internet superhero dude, it's really a non issue.

This is a really great post - thanks for taking the time to put this together.

Imo Quinn is being blamed for a ton of stuff that either isn’t a coaches fault, isn’t a coaches job or just isnt reflected in reality - but this here is a great example of something that absolutely is a coaching problem.

Would have been more effective with GIFS or video rather than still frames but I appreciate the effort.

It's true all were seeing here is the moment something is wrong not how it got that way, you can stop the play at any point and say someone is wide open because its a pp.

True but we’re seeing the same thing is wrong over and over which indicates how it’s getting there

Not adjusting was the Achilles heel of AV

The first three penalty kills were excellent because Buffalo wasn't able to successfully gain the zone. The Rangers are extremely aggressive in the neutral zone and were forcing dump ins, but when Buffalo is able to get set up and move the puck around, over-aggressiveness cost them on the Reinhart goal... again...

The PK is frustrating. They have a number of kills where they look f***ing fantastic and you think they've figured it out. And then they come out, make one enormous, glaring mistake, and it's in the net.

can a mod change the title to past tense? Completely different look right now. They're still getting out high to pressure the point but the 2nd forward is staying put in the passing lane. Much better PK lately....

They’ve been using a diamond kill. It’s one of the reason their PK has been so damn good lately.
It’s a hybrid. They same to rotate between a tight box and a diamond depending on where the puck carrier is. The idea is to clear shooting lanes so that the goalie can see the puck but have at least one person in front to clear rebounds. I’m just working from memory ... so the details might be a bit off. The rotation is very clear though.

If we had Martin last year we would have played in the round Robin rather than the play in rounds.

When we hired Quinn it baffled me that they kept Ruff around for more than a year. It was clear that even under AV, Ruff's handling of the D was a mess and his teams were never known for their defensive prowess.

Martin is the perfect compliment to Quinn. He brings experience and a sound defensive structure. Hajek has looked night and day better. Trouba and Smith still have their moments but they look better as well. Bitetto has filled in nicely. Ironically the only two that have struggled are Jack Johnson, who I'm sure doesnt give a f*** anymore and Tony who may have been to pissed off at the coaching staff to listen.
