OT: Washington Commanders 2025-26 thread | Football is fun again Edition

Meh. I still hate it. It’s a dumb name, and I’m bummed they are sticking with it

It's still basically half of the people polled other than Commanders fans, who are still only at 62% partly due to copium.

People are warming up to it because of time and probably buying some gear after a good season. There's less shame in it.

But it's a tenuous grip. If the Harris group came out today with a tweet saying "would fans be open to changing the name?" the response would probably be at least 80% HELL YES RIGHT NOW.

Damn right

After the season they just had you have to keep the name and if they keep on winning, people are going to keep on liking the name more and more

The name is okay to me but it just feels like a separate team from the Redskins. I remember legends like Russ Grimm being interviewed and they didn't really feel tied to the Commanders because everything they did and represented was with the Washington Redskins. I know the HOG is trying to tie into the past and history and bring all the legends back, but at the end of the day it does feel like they are two separate entities. Sheehan had a good point on this too, that if it was still the Redskins and you had the season last year the hype would be much greater than it was.

I think that's kind of the point though. Even sidestepping the Native American issue completely, the Redskins name for the vast majority of people (myself included) is more associated with the 25 years of futility and embarrassment of the Snyder Era than the glory days from before.

A little bit more of a tie in with the past (particularly the uniforms going back to basically carbon copies of what they once were but with a different helmet logo) would be great, but I for one am more than happy to be separated from Snyder for good. Jaden Daniels and Dan Quinn and Adam Peters and Josh Harris put together the best season in generations as Commanders, that's good enough for me.

Redskins and championships is what many of us know.

Snyder doesn’t = Redskins. I understand how younger fans feel, and it BLOWS that all you had were the Snyder years — it really does — but Snyder is not Redskins. He’s a large healing pimple on the ass of the franchise.

And it’s not so much Redskins vs Commanders (although that’s a blow out decision for a LOT of us), it’s Commanders vs something better. Anything better.

Commanders is a stupid name bourn out of a need to make changes. Changed by a flawed group (Snyder, Rivera, and Wright) pushed into a decision.

It is what it is, but it sucks. It is “Wizards part Deux” for me.

Doing so well last year has sealed the name deal, and made us communists permanently.

Only Dan could come up with a long clunky name with no logical shortened name. Clear incompetence and desperation trying to ride the ponytails of the support of our military.

For that, forever we will use, Go Skins.

I hate the name and wait for... Tuddy the Hog. It's a freaking hog. Should be a f***ing warrior of some sort. Gladiator on a stallion riding around. Guy lighting the fuse on a cannon as the team comes out.

It remains a complete marketing fail that Dan didn't even unfurl the mascot until week 16. Mind boggling ineptness. Taking years to pick a crappy name is worth mentioning. Mrs Snyder was of no help, clearly evidenced with her unis. The rebrand needed to happen after getting rid of him.

The problem is, if not Commanders, then what? All the good, basic names are taken.

Washington is terrible with names, really bad with logos, and even worse with branding.

I mean, the basketball team is red, white and blue and called Wizards. The football team is burgundy and gold and called Commanders. There is zero cohesion between name and design. The Wizards logo is hideous and the Commanders is the letter W.

The Nationals and Capitals are generic names with red, white and blue color schemes. Definitely better but not exactly earth shattering either.

I’ve become fine with Commanders, but part of that is because it’s better than Wizards or Sea Dogs. It could have been even worse. It’s almost like the focus groups for the region are filled with people who suffer from design palsy… and the final decision makers are somehow even worse.

Commanders screams Snyder to me..and I don’t like it.
And Rivera, who was a big influence on the name and was a proponent of something connected to the military.

Our name going forward should not be the lasting legacies of two of the biggest failures in this organization’s history. I wish there was a clean break from all things Snyder (and to a lesser extent, Riverboat).

I can’t get on board with “the others are shit, so this is ok”. And I don’t believe for a second that there are no good alternatives.

Snyder’s last FU to the fans and the league. Wipe anything to do with his toxic ass and flush it.

Btw I fully believe Harris is already planning a name change, the early success of JD just allows him to sell a lot of merch now and reclaim more profitability to reinvest into the club, while they carefully decide on the next brand identity to adopt where they reap even more from a better constructed team a few years from now…
