Hey guys.. Finn here.
I just wanted to let those who think the 2006 and 2007 drafts are shallow know they've got a misunderstanding.
Prior to the 2006 draft, we had 2 drafts with 3 players that could easily come into the game and dominate. Two Russians and a sly Canadian. Not to mention that that was over a 3 year span. So we got our NHL back with a blast of youthful prospects. When the 2006 draft came... we all wanted another Ovechkin or another Crosby to come screaming out and getting the calder.
The thing is we have a mindset that every draft will hold a superstar that will rise the first year. Those 3 years and 3 great prospects kinda altered our mind into thinking that the NHL draft is a way to streamline superstars into our league.
The truth is that the 2006 and 2007 drafts are packed with talent and depth. E. Johnson, Backstrom, Toews and Staal are all either NHL ready or already in the NHL. While Kane, Turris, VanRiemsdyk and Voracek are all definate starters in the future. We have just become accustomed with instant gradification that we have a hard time fathoming that prospects do need time to become superstars and not every draft will harvest an 'immediate high'.
So next time you look at those prospects for the '07 draft... just remember talent is something that cannot be rushed.
