I was looking at the Blues board at their thread about the teammates fighting during practice. Then I remembered Probert and Primeau having a go back in the day. So I look up the video. There's Bullet Bob Page narrating the video from the sportsdesk. Then I was trying to find out when he left MSG. It's like he just vanished. Not even on Wikipedia. Anyone remember? Did they pull a Duguay on him and show him the door?

I'll try and provide as much info as possible:

Page was very very opinionated. It was part of his persona or "gimmick" in wrestling terms. He was with MSG Networks from the late 80s until the late 90s. His sarcasm and satirical humor and his criticism of local teams got him in hot water after Cablevision and the Dolans took over. We all know their PR Mantra is "Everything is always wonderful in the world of MSG." One example I'll never forget is when the Rangers reacquired Doug Lidster from the Blues (who was part of that "compensation" package along with Tikannen in 1995 that went for Nedved as part of the Blues tampering with Keenan while under contract) for Jay Wells. Page starts out the segment by saying "Talk about trading Tweedle Dee for Tweedle Dumb" as by this point both players were 15 or so years into their respective careers. He was either Let Go or they just didn't renew his contract I believe around 1998 or 1999. By that point he was already in the business for 25 years and just had enough.

He's been mostly retired and living in Florida. He occasionally pops up to do interviews, podcast, or once in a blue moon contemporary stuff but all regarding Michigan State or Detroit sports because that's the region he came up in and identifies with. He had the same persona/sarcasm even back then. I think he once got Chuck Dailey the legendary coach of the Pistons really angry at him.

His lack of anything Rangers related is because he's not really a fan of NY sports, the region, or the market. He had some tough words about it in an old interview he did (I think it was around the time Kreider/Stepan/Ryan Borque where playing the WJCs but it could just be when I found it).

He was a huge part of my childhood and I appreciated his style even if it rubbed people the wrong way. MSG Sportsdesk was must watch tv back then, especially the 7 PM News Update where he basically crammed all the stories of the day into two five minute segments. He was always on and during the summer many big trades around the league that weren't easily accessible he'd talk about. Before the internet, Bob Page was the news.

I wanted to contact him through some Michigan State people, but didn't because I don't have a podcast or show. If that ever changes, I would love to have him on and just let him take over the mic and tell stories both from his NY days and also Michigan.

When they fired Colin Campbell and replaced him with John Muckler, Page referred to Muckler as “the Rangers latest coach”. Earlier that day, MSG decided to not renew his contract. Page went off on the Rangers. Campbell took the team to the ECF the previous May. It’s not his fault. Neil Smith is responsible for the roster.

When the Rangers signed Sakic to the offer sheet in 1997, the Yankees were on and they broke into the broadcast to announce the signing. Page was one who broke the news.

He was too honest.

MSG SportsDesk was good. Jenna Wolfe and Tracey Wolfson were the weekend anchors. They were just starting in the business. Deb Kaufman was also part of the desk. She was on ESPN2 when they first launched and then joined MSG.

Mike Crispino filled in for Page.

Yup, Crispino was the alternate or auxiliary host. Bill Daughtry who did a pretty good job and was a lot more laid back took over for a while after Page. Daughtry then went to ESPN radio where he was very honest and always gave a good assessment of the Ranger dark age messes.

It's funny you say Page was too honest. He was blunt. I think a lot of it was shrick or amping it up. That kind of journalism or tone would not fly today. It didn't with Dolan in the late 90s.

I made sure to tune into a game before the intro started just for that. Didn't matter if puck drop wasn't for 30 minutes and they showed static until then.

They ought to just re-do the intro with updated clips and current players putting on gear the same way. That 25 year old intro is better than anything any team has put up since.

I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure Bob Page was the first person to use the term “Fishsticks” in relation to the Islanders idiotic jersey design.

I also remember him cracking on the name, Minnesota Wild.

Great to hear. Bob must be in his late-60s or early-70s now. His stories are treasures because the world is so different and communication is much easier nowadays.
