We have finally purged ourselves of the idiocy of the 2007 and 2008 offseasons.

Sather has been very, very good since then. Unfortunately, he thought he had a Stanley Cup caliber team 5 years ago and gobbled up/overpaid what he figured were the missing links. What a mistake.

NYR is likely always going to have to import their top level talent - it just has to be the right players.

Gaborik, Richards, Nash - big thumbs up

Gomez, Redden, Drury? - not so much

It's also holding on to the right guys and watching them develop into their prime years--Lundqvist, Girardi, Staal, Callahan--all as important in their own way as Gaborik, Richards and Nash--actually Lundqvist is the most important player on the team. Saying that there are no guarantees that we're going to win a Cup. There are more good signs of players coming along though--McDonagh, Stepan, Del Zotto, Kreider are or should be key players for a long time. Work in some good role playing veterans and you have a recipe that looks like it might work.
 
The great thing about hockey is that most good players can continue well into their 30s at a high level.

In the NFL, once a player hits 30 it's like the countdown to a drop off has begun, for most players. Pretty much all positions besides QBs, who can go a little longer generally.

In the NHL I'd say that age doesn't strike till more like 33 or 35. Plus they generally start earlier.

So for a guy like Dan Girardi who is 28, in the NFL, it would be "this is his three year prime window, he has to win right now."

In the NHL.... well, Girardi could be here playing at a top-4 D level for another 7 seasons.
 
This Redden stuff is too much.

Did teams see Redden play in the last few years? Redden hasn't been very good since the NHL changed the rules after the 2nd lockout. Bryan Murray signed him to a 2 year extension and then spent the next two years trying to trade him but couldn't because of a no trade clause. Then Sather came along with his good buddy Don Meehan. Somehow Redden was worth the same $6.5M Ottawa gave him times six. Remember in the movie Goodfellas when Henry Hill and Jimmy Burke pulled off the Lufthansa heist. The Redden contract was the biggest heist in the state of NY since the Lufthansa heist. $16M the first two years. $13M the next 2 which were spent in the AHL with no escrow. The last two were $10M. Redden got $1M of the $5M this season last summer as a signing bonus. Pro-rated $4 is $2M and change. The remaining $5M is $3,333,333 with the amnesty buyout.

The way people talk about this guy.

Amazingly, word is making its way through the rumor mill that despite his client’s lack of high-level activity, agent Don Meehan of Newport Sports will be seeking somewhere around (a prorated) $1.5 million or $2 million for this season. That’s a steep price.

You'll find analysis is showing just the opposite, that hockey player's peaks are now younger, and players are not maintaining their level of play into their 30s.

Traditional thinking had players peaking at ~28, but statistical models are now showing this as 25/26. Take a look at the very unscientific, but interesting top 50 players list on TSN:

Featuring only 12 players 30 or over, look at the high number of players under 25 that are producing some noteworthy production.

Lastly, with Dan Girardi's physical and shot blocking ways, I'm hoping for a full season before major injuries derailing him, not counting on the possibility of 7 additional seasons.

Defensemen especially are now only as good as their footspeed and ability to recover. Darian Hatcher, Wade Redden, once exemplary defensemen. Once their skating couldn't keep up, were out of league (we'll see how Wade Redden 2.0 does).

This league is now about skating, and skating ability skews younger.

When you sign a contract you are accepting the responsibility your salary carries. Make no mistake, Sather was an idiot to offer it to begin with, but regardless Redden accepted it knowing he was unlikely to meet those expectations. Redden failed miserably and got paid millions to rot in the minors. I feel zero sympathy.

Let me ask you a question - if Glen Sather called you up and offered you $36M to play in the NHL right now, would you accept it?
 
If you look at some of the NHL rosters,you see why Redden,Gomez and Kovalev have takers. The NHL doesn't have enough players for 30 teams. The Russians are not coming over anymore.

The Blues need a lefty shot. Hitch was involved in those Hockey Canada programs with Redden. Maybe Hitch thinks he will be able to hide Redden in his system.
