W Ilya Protas - Windsor Spitfires, OHL (2024, 75th, WSH)

I know people on this website seem to be obsessed with junior scoring and box scores because it’s easier for them to contextualize, but ultimately what matters is how you do in the NHL and pro hockey and not Junior.

Jordan Dumais also went third round, he obliterated the Q for two years after getting picked, people talked about him as a steal, and now he’s had a tough time this season (injuries and some off ice problems thrown in there, to be fair). None of his junior stats matter a jot at this point. His proponents who railed against how wrong the consensus was are awfully quiet now. No CBJ fan will take solace “well, at least he dominated the Q those two years.”

So maybe stop your victory lap until we see Protas at a higher level of hockey. I did question if he was rightly picked in the third round. I say it’s aging okay because we have no data on him at a higher level than junior since last season. I don’t think that’s invalidated because a guy who put up big junior totals last year is doing so again. There are fundamental flaws in his skillset that will keep him from being an NHL regular, in my opinion. It doesn’t make you worthy of any specific draft slot due to your junior accomplishments. You either have the projection to the NHL or you don’t and that’s what you base draft slots on. Making this about junior production is flawed.
Wow... so you are tripling and quadrupling down on your take about the young Ilya Protas... that stubborness is crazy...
Like many posters above mentioned, let me remind you that we jus want to point out that you said Protas was a bad pick and that Washington took him too early in the 3rd round... that's all there is to it...

If we take a look 1 year after the draft, he is well worth a 1st round pick in a redraft, let alone a mere 3rd round. Heck, he is already playing above what most 3rd rounders will achieve in their career. Even if he become just a decent AHLer, it's already better than 90% of the players that will become cooks and cleaners like you stated (I laughed pretty hard on that one ngl haha).

In 3 years. you will be exposed even harder than right now when Ilya joins his brother in Washington and be a full time NHLer.

You’ve called players cooks and cleaners. And have also said we can’t take stats too seriously because players are doing too well. I’m not strawmanning you.
You literally claimed I said the OHL only has players like that. I never said they only have players like that. I have said that junior has a lot of players who aren't future professionals and aren't playing hockey for a living eventually. Of course there are future professional hockey players and NHL players, so yes you are 100% putting forth a straw man argument of something I never said.

Excuse me, you literally bumped a post of mine from a year ago to try to dunk on me.

If you think I am going to react nicely to your hostility, I don't know what would ever make you think someone would react nicely to that.

Redrafts a year later are worthless, and are done by people who have a self interest to try to claim their prospect who has proven relatively nothing is better than some other player who also has proven relatively nothing. Teams don't abandon their choices after a year. I promise you teams aren't trading their 1st rounders for a 3rd rounder because he scored a lot and maybe more than them one year in a junior league.

Legitimately, is english not your first language? Because if its not, it would explain a bit.

"That’s always going to be how Pavel argues. Guys in CHL don’t score well? They’re just future drive through workers of course and that’s all the CHL has."

Like this is not to be taken literally. It is a way of saying that you do not see a decent chunk of the OHL as good competition for top prospects. That you view the league as lesser than.

Oh, so I shouldn't go by the plain language you use?

That's some argument!

Yeah not always. People just parse language like that naturally. Like if I say “omg this is the best sandwich ever”. I don’t actually literally think it’s the best sandwich that has been made in the history of mankind. I just mean the sandwich is good.

I have no problem changing the way I communicate with you. You just have to be up front. Do you have a hard time taking things literally?

Trades aren't the same thing as picking in retrospect, what are you even doing right now?
