Wow... so you are tripling and quadrupling down on your take about the young Ilya Protas... that stubborness is crazy...I know people on this website seem to be obsessed with junior scoring and box scores because it’s easier for them to contextualize, but ultimately what matters is how you do in the NHL and pro hockey and not Junior.
Jordan Dumais also went third round, he obliterated the Q for two years after getting picked, people talked about him as a steal, and now he’s had a tough time this season (injuries and some off ice problems thrown in there, to be fair). None of his junior stats matter a jot at this point. His proponents who railed against how wrong the consensus was are awfully quiet now. No CBJ fan will take solace “well, at least he dominated the Q those two years.”
So maybe stop your victory lap until we see Protas at a higher level of hockey. I did question if he was rightly picked in the third round. I say it’s aging okay because we have no data on him at a higher level than junior since last season. I don’t think that’s invalidated because a guy who put up big junior totals last year is doing so again. There are fundamental flaws in his skillset that will keep him from being an NHL regular, in my opinion. It doesn’t make you worthy of any specific draft slot due to your junior accomplishments. You either have the projection to the NHL or you don’t and that’s what you base draft slots on. Making this about junior production is flawed.
Like many posters above mentioned, let me remind you that we jus want to point out that you said Protas was a bad pick and that Washington took him too early in the 3rd round... that's all there is to it...
If we take a look 1 year after the draft, he is well worth a 1st round pick in a redraft, let alone a mere 3rd round. Heck, he is already playing above what most 3rd rounders will achieve in their career. Even if he become just a decent AHLer, it's already better than 90% of the players that will become cooks and cleaners like you stated (I laughed pretty hard on that one ngl haha).
In 3 years. you will be exposed even harder than right now when Ilya joins his brother in Washington and be a full time NHLer.
