The idea that has been floating around these boards that he was the missing piece of the puzzle that prevented us from winning more cups is overblown excuse-making.

Regarding the suspension, he did an end-run to the KHL to circumvent any NHL punishment and make his money, and the NHL wants to send an example because of it.

Voynov did fine for himself away from the NHL. He was the third-highest-paid player in the KHL in 2016 (and I don't feel like looking up other years) behind Kovalchuk and Datsyuk.
What a load. The guy was suspended the duration of the investigation. He was going to be deported by the US after pleading down to a misdemeanor.

To be fair, he didn't do it to circumvent NHL punishment but he did it because he was going to possibly be deported so he basically said "You can't fire me, I quit."

The ship has sailed for him being on the Kings. I felt he should have been allowed back in '16 since he had been suspended for a season already and did his jail sentence. Even if the league added further games, it should have happened then.

The league has not wanted him back. Would not surprise me if they pulled strings with ICE to lead to him self-deporting. They punted as long as they could and then just dropped another season on him. That is wrong and the NHLPA should fight it.

No team is going to touch him though. He'll be Ray Rice'd at this point since he will be like 30 when this is over. Not ancient but also not worth the PR hit. Definitely not worth it to LA who will be rebuilding and doesn't need anymore negative fan reaction.

Get the suspension to 41 games, sign him and send him to Ottawa with Panheuf. They will trade him to Toronto for a first in the deadline. Voynov will suceed In Toronto and everybody will forget what he did.

I don't care about him anymore. He won't be back with this team and even he does he won't move the needle. Voynov can appeal all he wants, but I think its best to move on from this.

What the f***? Escaped punishment? Dude was deported.

NHLPA is reviewing the right to appeal, doesn't mean they'll take it up. I don't think it would matter, he won't play in the NHL again, no team would sign him.

That's where you're wrong. If this was done in a more timely manner he would easily find work in the NHL. the only reason why he might not get signed is because of his age and time away from the NHL.

LOL. The Kings were barely a blip in the LA media when they WON 2 Cups!!

"Fans" and media will care about Voynov around... ..... that long. This is 5 yr old news. And you all want to punish his wife by making her go back to Russia - again?!

They did this to save face and say, look we suspended him the whole year but he appealed and the arbitrator lowered it... It’s a get out of jail free card for the NHL

I didn't want him to leave in the first place but I'm not going to rehash the numerous posts on the subject from 2015.

What is the upside to bringing back a 30 year old defenseman on a rebuilding team that is, mild or not, going to be a PR issue?

Do you live in the Twitter world? That's where the Bark Madness fans and the ones that don't want him back reside. It isn't an issue of whether LA at large freaks out about it, it is whether the existing LA Kings fan base will be unhappy about it.

Going to be hard enough selling tickets to losing teams. Bringing back a guy with baggage who isn't going to change them from pretenders to contenders just seems like something Blake will not want to take on.

Blake stated yesterday that the idea of the Cup teams is over with. Seems like bringing him back would fly in the face of that. All that said, he should be allowed to play in the NHL again if someone wants him: I just don't see it being LA. I don't think he would want to come back here anyways: it is fresh start time.

Like without getting into the nuances of why the selective, scaled outrage is trash (in this case I'm going to believe the player, but in this one I'm going to believe only one police officer and not the player and his wife, but in this one I'm going to agree with the verdict, etc.)...a 5-year suspension is all sorts of liability for the NHL who doesn't have a written DV policy. Allowing one guy to skirt with a handful of games while writing by far the longest sentence in NHL history for another...trash.

They're getting the good 'ol Canadian boy all sorts of rehab and support after a minor suspension, but Voynov...

The league knows they will lose an appeal on this, I think they are fine with that. They appear tough, and Voynov ends up with a more appropriate suspension. Everyone wins, I guess.

I am assuming you are talking Watson. With that though, how do you compare a couple that is arguing and the GF ends up with some red marks on her chest vs a guy who made a bloody mess of his wife. To save on the argument of her lack of proper English skills we wont talk about what she really said, but the evidence of red marks vs blood is totally apples and bananas.

Both are guilty of misdemeanors. We can quibble over the extent but both cases are physical abuse. I don't care if one was a push or the other was a punch. The league hasn't exactly distanced itself from Bobby Hull either, a well documented spousal abuser.

Of course the NHLPA will fight this. They would be doing a huge disservice to every player, not just Voynov. This ruling sets a precedent for all players, not just Russian players. If Crosby goes on a bender one night and roughs up his significant other, he's going to get essentially 2+ years suspension? Not gonna happen. I'm not condoning domestic violence, but the league has gone completely overboard with the punishment.

Here's some past league shenanigans with discipline or lack thereof.

And lol at this blast from the past:

Bettman scheduled a reinstatement hearing for Bertuzzi on April 26, 2005. The hearing was attended separately by Bertuzzi and Moore.[14] After the lockout officially ended and the NHL was set to resume play for the 2005–06 season, Bettman announced Bertuzzi's reinstatement on August 8, citing that "Mr. Bertuzzi ha[d] paid a very significant price for his conduct," adding that he felt Bertuzzi was "genuinely remorseful and apologetic."[15] Bertuzzi's 17-month suspension caused him to miss a total of 20 games—the fourth-longest suspension in NHL history at the time.[16] The suspension accounted for $501,926.39 in forfeited salary, as well as an approximate $350,000 in lost endorsements. Bettman also cited "uncertainty, anxiety, stress and emotional pain for the Bertuzzi family" resulting from the suspension as a reason for his reinstatement.[14]
