Blue Jays Discussion: Vladdy has signed 14 yr/500mil

Weekly defense update:

Kirk is still 3rd overall in catcher Def. He's now tied with Heineman (and others) for 4th overall in DRS (behind only Narvaez in the AL)

Vlad is 10th among qualified 1B in Def. He is tied for 7th in DRS.

Ernie is 6th overall and 1st in the AL in 2B Def. He is tied for 4th in DRS and behind only Gimenez in the AL (Gimenez is 14th in Def)

Bo is still struggling at SS, but not getting worse.

Clement is 6th in 3B Def and Barger is 14th. Neither one is particularly high on the DRS chart (Barger has 1 and Clement has 2).

Roden still leads LF Def. Lukes has 2 DRS but a negative Def. Clase's Def has gotten up to 0 with 2 DRS.

Straw and Varsho are 9th and 10th respectively in CF Def. Varsho is tied for 2nd in DRS (behind Rafaela's 11) and Straw is tied for 7th.

Springer is now statistically the worst defensive RF in all of baseball.

These guys should be advanced as fast as their talent and performance allow. You never know when a pitcher will get injured so you don't want to waste those bullets in lower levels if they're ready for a challenge.

Yup.

Not keeping Manoah on the squad after he dominated in the spring of 2021 and letting the likes of Tanner Roark and Thomas Hatch start games instead certainly cost us the playoffs that year and in a wide-open year potentially cost us a WS.

And then Manoah ended up imploding anyway after we were overly careful with him.

Aaron Sanchez is another one. They tip toed around his innings when he was young and useful and then he ended up not being worth anything as he got older anyways.

An 805 OPS for Vladdy with his contract is ridiculous. No tolerance for his up and down inconsistency bs anymore.
There will never be one season of that contract that he lives up to it in season. It's a desperation albatross I wish was never offered. They would have been better served with the comp instead of that contract.

I agree with the strategy of being aggressive with pitchers to get the most out of them, but I don't think the Manoah situation was that black and white. He had 17 professional innings in his career. And as good as he was in the spring, it was 7 innings.

I don't know. It was a weirdly complicated situation, and what they ended up doing was already extremely aggressive.

Do you often make up other peoples opinions or do you just have zero reading comprehension ability? His contract is a huge problem though.

The Jays have resources so it’s good that they are using them. There is a chance to build something great around Vladdy. Better than not having him beyond this year and watching him play for the Yankees or Red Sox. I am not interested in a rebuild. I get it, right now what we have is not great but the resources are there. If they spend the resources better around Vladdy, they can build something special. If we have the resources, let's contend every year.

If the Jays stop spending, then Vladdy's contract becomes bad.

If the Jays decide that they are going to live near the top of the payroll charts for the foreseeable future because of this deal, then the symbolic value is huge.

Good to see nearly every acquisition Atkins made in the offseason is in "oof" territory.

Scherzer; old, can't stay healthy, has barely pitched (this one was avoidable too given how his time post Washington has went)

Santander: Awful when healthy, even more so now that he's still battling hip/shoulder issues. I won't call it over yet given guys much smarter than me like Keegan Matheson believe Santander will be better once healthy, but there's no spinning how bad the start of that deal has been.

Gimenez: Sub 600 OPS, i forgot he exists half the time. Awful, awful trade.

Hoffman: Looked fantastic in April but then proceeded to run full speed into a wall. 5+ ERA with a 1.1 WHIP suggests he's not as bad as he's looked, but still.

The tally thus far:

Scherzer: 0 WAR (15.5 million for one year)
Gimenez: 0.9 WAR (10 million yearly)
Hoffman: -0.3 WAR (11 million yearly)
Santander: -0.7 WAR (18.5 million yearly)

Put together that's a total of 0.1 WAR in 50+ games for a total of 55 million. Bang up job, Ross.

They have spent 225 million around Vladdy and we are a sub 500 team. That's before the new contract kicks in.

Him not being fired is the biggest mistake the jays made the last two off seasons. He should not be employed right now. Zero accountability by the organization.
