Monday morning defense update:

Kirk is still 3rd overall in Def (behind Bailey and Moreno) but he's only at 1 DRS. Heineman is actually tied for 2nd in DRS (behind Narvaez) but his Def is off because of lack of innings.

Vladdy is 11th in Def among qualified 1B (though only Mountcastle, Aranda and Santana are above by anything more than a sneeze in the AL). He has 1 DRS (the AL leaders have 2). (Weird note: Matt Olsen currently has a 1.2Def as a 1B with 8 DRS).

Gimenez is up to 10th in 2B Def and leads DRS.

Clement is 3rd in 3B Def though his DRS has dropped to 1. Barger is currently sitting on 1DRS and a 0.7 Def as a 3B.

Crawford, Henderson, Bo and Adames (along with Edwards in SD) make up the bottom 5 in defensive SS.

In the outfield, Toronto doesn't have a qualifying LF (though Roden was 2nd in Def). Clase and Lukes have both been below average defensive LF. Santander has a very small sample size (46 innings), but was actually decent in LF in that sample. Straw is a good defender everywhere. In RF, Barger is statistically the best defender (though to be fair, small sample and almost all arm-based). Lukes has been neutral (49 innings) with Roden slightly worse (40 innings) and George and Tony haven't been good in RF.

In CF, Straw is 6th in Def and Varsho is 25th. Straw is tied for 5th in DRS and Varsho is tied for 8th.

And their top pick in 2024 is off to a great start to his pro career...

Not to say that Condon didn't have absolute boom/bust potential but if I were a prospect that's probably the one org I might actually refuse to join.

Yeah, wow. The rest of the top 5 picks in the 2024 draft are all off to great starts to their pro careers and Condon is slashing .180/.248/.270 with 4 BBs and 34Ks to start his season in A ball. That organization can't get anything right. Nick Kurtz was the next guy taken and has basically the same profile as a tall power-hitting 1B and he's already in MLB.

Condon was playing through a hand injury last year and got hurt this year in spring training so can't really evaluate him yet in the pros. Will have to stay healthy though

Late farm summary from Sunday.

AAA BUFF: nothing to exciting in the loss; Lucas struggled, Roden 2hits. Has been in the lead off spot.

AA NH: quality start from Devereaux Harrison to get a W. Yohendrick Pinango 2-4 with a HR and SB.

A+ VAN: JWB’s big start was mentioned. Pen gave up the lead. No real offensive standout, Nimmala 2-4 with a 2b.

A DUN: next step up the rehab ladder for Kloff. 4ip, 3 runs, none earned, 5k. Balanced offence. Manuel Beltre 2-5 with a 3b.

1. Steward Berroa traded to the LA Dodgers for cash. Adds to their embarrassment of riches. All the best to him, seemed a good dude.

2. Terrible news for Jake Bloss. Wonder how long that’s been going on.

3. Any word on Alek Manoah?

On the plus side of the pitching:

Yesavage - 5 IP, 2 ER on 4 hits, no walks, 12 Ks
Stanifer - 4 IP, 1 ER on 1 hit, 1 walk, 7 Ks

19 Ks and 1 BB between the two of them tonight. Crazy... just move them to Vancouver already.

Tuesday on the farm:

AAA BUFF: humming along fine, up 7-1 going into the 8th on the back of homers from OMart, Babe and Rakin Roden. Then bam, even worse than the big team….pen allows 9 er over the last two….and that was that.
A+ VAN with a thorough win. Balanced offence led by Cutter Coffey 3-4 with a sb and Sean Keys Arjun Nimmala mirroring each other- 1-3 with a 2b and 2 bb’s.
A DUN: as mentioned, Trey and Gage are seeming too good for the level. Offensive leaders in the win: Manuel Beltre 2-5 with two steals, including home, and Sam Shaw 3-3 with a 2b, sb, 2bbs and 2rbi.
A FCL swept a double dip. Of note, Adam Macko started the first game doing just fine, 4ip, 2h, 0bb, 1er and 6ks.

What's with the injuries to the pitching in the minor leagues? Tiedemann and now Bloss. I am almost expecting something happening to Yesevage now.

It's an epidemic across baseball for pretty much all teams. Basically every prospect pitcher is maxing themselves out trying to get to 95-100 MPH (or throw exceedingly nasty breaking stuff with high spin rates) and an inordinate number of pitching prospects need TJS before they ever play an MLB game.

Here’s a question I never thought I’d be able to ask. But if Springer can keep up this kind of pace through the season. Does anyone think we can cash him out at the deadline or in the off season. I think it would be real smart to move off of him if we can at the deadline

I get why they did it, but the problem is who they replaced them with or they didn't replace them with. I would have kept one of them.
Gurriel was replaced with Varsho. He’s elite. Teo was maybe a mistake in hindsight considering they never replaced his power but I’m happy not watching him try to play rf. With Varsho that would have been mitigated though
