Blue Jays Discussion: Vladdy has signed 14 yr/500mil

Awesome news that some of the pitchers will be filtering back into the system. Would love an update on Macko and Rojas.

50-50 on the farm.
AAA BUF got a gem from Easton Lucas, 6 shutout innings 3bb+h and 4ks. For those keeping track for a guy just get in fan his feet wet as a SP, that’s three excellent starts, one good one, one bad one and one implosion. Offence put up 8 runs, mostly from non-roster catchers. Both Ali Sanchez and Christian Bethancourt hit their 4th homers. Sanchez is actually raking: .953 ops.
AA NH got a solid start from Rafael Sanchez, 1er over 5.2ip. Bullpen let it go in the 10th. Offence was lean, Charles McAdoo hit his first dinger.
A+ VAN got hammered. Arjun Nimmala 2-4 with his 6th bomb.
A DUN got the already mentioned stellar start from Trey Yesavage. Followed by 2 innings from Gage Stanifer no er. Manuel Beltre and Tucker Toman hit homers, Phil Clarke 2-4 presumably on a rehab outing.
Sounds like Macko is starting to throw and build up. Might get a rehab start soon.

2-4 day on the farm.

AAA BUFF got another good start from Trenton Wallace, my fave fringe guy: 5ip, 1er, 6bb+h, 6k’s. ERA down to 4.95 after a bad start. Command still a lil iffy, but he’s working his way into contention for a roster spot, you’d think. Paxton Schulz coughed up a couple runs to take the loss. OMart a lil warmer, 2-3 with a couple of 2baggers.

AA NH got a strong start from Ryan Watson, first in the system to go seven: 0 runs, just 4bb+h, 3k’s for the win. RJ Schreck warming up, went yard for the first time, a triple shy of the cycle, and stole a base.

A+ VAN got a rough yet encouraging start from struggling Fernando Perez. 2er in 4ip on 8bb+h to take the loss. DH Aaron Parker 1-2 with a 2b and 3bb’s.

A DUN got another solid start and win from Cody Holcombe 5ip 1er on 5bb+h and 6ks. Manuel Beltre keeps smacking the ball all over the place, 3-4 with a walk. Big game for Yhoangel Aponte, 3-5, hr, 2b and 4ribbies. Even more interesting day at the dish, Peyton Powell, 0-0, one run, one ribbie, 5bb’s.

The FG WAR charts are grouping people together by WAR (which is confusing). Where the displayed WAR is rounded to the nearest 0.1, you would expect a stats site to sort by unrounded WAR then display the rounded number.

(This is painfully obvious when you look at pitcher fWAR and note that Hoffman has the best non-ERA stats for relievers but is listed 3rd)

Jays apparently signing both Spencer Turnbull and Jose Urena.

Turnbull performed well last year, seems like solid rotation depth once stretched out.

Velocity decline for Turnbull could be a bad sign.

Urena had an uptick in velocity (likely causing control issues).

The middle of the pen is a real problem. We win 3 games in a row and suddenly rookie Fluharty, Green and Yariel are out 2nd to 4th best options because 2 other guys aren't available, and we can't win a game where our starter only gives up 1 hit over 6 innings. I don't really blame Schneider. Yimi was at 30 pitches but I didn't want to go to Yariel in that spot either. Tate, Lauer, Yariel, Green, Schultz, Walker, Fluharty is just a lot of guys who aren't fun to watch late when you're winning

Fluharty is good, just inexperienced. Green and Yariel I'm not so sure. Can Sandlin come back soon? Not a sentence I expected to type a month and a half ago. Maybe we could be a little less streaky? Instead of winning 4 losing 8 then winning 4 we could split it up a bit so we don't need our back end arms every day for a week straight then not need them for 2 weeks after that. Or maybe the offense who had 317 runner on in the first 4 innings could score more than 2 runs doing so.

AAA BUFF took it on the chin. Rough start for Jake Bloss again, didn’t get out of the fourth: 3.1ip, 8bb+h, 4er and 5k’s. The bullpen was worse. OMart getting warmer, 3-4 with a 2b, hitting the Mendoza line. Will Wagner hit a homer in his 4 trips.

AA NH played one of two - Michael Dominguez and Ryan Jennings combined for 7 shutout innings. Offence managed one run on 4hits. RJ Shreck made it to the Mendoza line, too. Nightcap was postponed to tomorrow.

A+ VAN got another strong start and win from Grant Rogers, 5.2ip, 0er, 4bb+h and 4ks. Pat Gallagher was very solid behind him. Offence led by Sean Keys and Cutter Coffey with multi hit games.

A DUN Khal Stephen was dealing again, 5 shutout innings 8ks. Offence exploded for 14 runs, led by vet Phil Clarke 3-5 with a hr, 2b and 4rbi.

A FCL Jays season got underway with a win - a fun team to follow since a lot of rehab journeys start here. Landon Maroudis took the hill, and pitched 2.1 fine innings: 1er, 3bb+h and 4k’s. Silvano Hecchevaria - excellent in the DSL last year - tossed 4innings to get the win: 1er, 2bb+h, 2k. Juan Rosas 2-4 with 2 2b’s. Emmanuel Bonilla 0-4 with an rbi.

Defense update:

Kirk is down to 4th overall in Def (behind Dingler from Detroit). His 1 DRS is a ways off of Narvaez and Jansen)

Vlad's Def went down, but he's still at 1 DRS (Mountcastle's also went down)

Gimenez is up to 10th in Def (1st in DRS) and climbing fast

Bo is closer to the bottom now

Ernie Clement is 2nd in Def and T-2 for DRS.

Toronto doesn't have a qualifying LF but Roden is close to the top.

Varsho is up to 21st in CF Def and T18 for DRS

Toronto has no qualifying RF and Springer/Santander have not been great

Yeah, Sandlin and Burr (apparently he's getting close to a rehab?) coming back would make me WAY more confident in this pen.

High-leverage guys: Hoffman, Garcia, Little
Solid middle-relief guys: Sandlin, Burr, Fluharty
Back of the pen guys: Rodriguez, Green, Walker, Tate, etc.

That seems like a solid group to me, but because they play so many tight games and Sandlin and Burr are out, their only options are to run the top guys into the ground or turn to Green (who can't keep the ball in the park right now) and Rodriguez (who can't find the strike zone). They need someone else to come back or step up.

Rough day on the farm yesterday.

AAA BUFF was the only team to win yesterday. Decent start from Lazaro Estrada 1er in 4.2ip, and shutout pen work from Bruihl, Fisher and Bash.

AA NH lost both ends of a doubleheader. RJ Schreck had a home run and double in the nightcap.

A+ VAN came up short in a pitching duel that saw 4 total hits in the game. Jackson Wentworth tossed 5 no-hit innings with 3bb’s.

A DUN took it on the chin losing 6-2. Gilberto Batista gave up 4runs, one earned run in 4ip. C Eduardo Duran clubbed a two run shot.

Man what the hell happened to Williams? He was money even as late as last year.

Did blowing that game against the Mets break him ala Blair Walsh or something?

Velocity down a bit, control was never amazing but it's much worse now, and shitty luck (.382 BABIP; career .267. also 37.5% LOB)

Such is life as a reliever. Even the elite ones aren't immune to extreme rough patches

I’m no fan of Mattingly as a manager but he was a legitimate superstar and probably the best hitter in MLB aside from Wade Boggs for a 5-year period in the 1980s before back problems sapped his power.
Is that a joke post that you responded to. Mattingly, Boggs and Gwynn were the 80's best hitters for contact.

I'm not sure if he's a good manager but John Schneider needs to get the hook.

And bring in another bat or three. f*** sakes Rogers. The AL is wide open.

Mad Max will sit on his thumb until he sees some lumber. I thought Arenado might have been an option. Should have grabbed Bregman

Rare Monday game in the minors.
A FCL Jays lost 4-2. Notable in this game was the starter, Adam Kloffenstein making his first appearance of the year. Got through 4.2ip with one unearned run and 8k’s against 6bb+h. Good length for a first start. Emmanuel Bonilla 1-4 with a bb and 2b.
More arms filtering back.

At the end of the day, Mattingly still has way too much say in things.

I don't want guys teaching hitters how to hit who have all the natural talent in the world and just had to tweak to be good. I would rather someone with limited hitting ability, who had to work to get everything out of what they had.

Fisher is the guy we got for Cavan Biggio who is now on his 4th organization in less than a year, so that trade is looking decent. Would rather give a look to a young guy like this who is performing well in AAA over a guy like Dillon Tate and his massively-down velocity at age 31.

I know it sucks that we dropped in the draft order, but who are you guys liking for us at pick 8?

MLB.com has us taking Billy Carlson.

8. Blue Jays: Billy Carlson, SS, Corona (Calif.) HS (No. 6)
This would make Hernandez and Carlson the highest-selected prep teammates in the same Draft, surpassing the 2007 Chatsworth (Calif.) HS duo of Mike Moustakas (No. 2) and Matthew Dominguez (No. 12). Some evaluators think Carlson is the best defensive high school shortstop they've ever seen, though he may require a swing upgrade that may not be hard to implement.

CBS has us taking college outfielder Chase Laviolette.

8. Toronto Blue Jays: Jace LaViolette, OF, Texas A&M

LaViolette started the year as 1A to Holliday, but a less than overwhelming SEC campaign has dampened the ceiling a bit. He’s hitting .276 with 48 strikeouts in 47 games – a 21.4% K rate – but has smacked 15 homers and reached base at a .437 clip. That’s all down from a sophomore year where he hit 29 homers, with six multi-homer games, and posted a .449 OBP. But the overall track record for the 6-foot-6 lefty slugger.
