Do MLB teams practice during the year or is it game day stuff? which I guess would be considered a practice?
They literally play every single day.

Baseball's graveyard. No prospects to speak of, and the ones they get seem to bust, guys on the roster outside of like, Tovar are pretty garbage. Chase Dollander will be next on the pile. Can we just fold the Rockies? They're awful, but 4-25 is a new low....

Going through the reddit thread about their record tying start and I saw a couple people say this might be the worst team they've ever seen. That's with the White Sox being as bad as they were last year too.
Gone are the days of Rocktober, that's for damn sure.
Edit: fun fact, the Rockies have only played 2 series in division thus far. Their strength of schedule is the toughest in the division the rest of the way. It might actually get way, way worse
They used to able to develop pitchers in the short term but they seem to flame out. Ubaldo was a fringe Cy Young candidate in his prime but he started to fall off as they were looking to trade him. Marquez was at least all-star level for a bit. Kyle Freeland was really good for a bit too before he hit a wall. When was the last time they developed a solid pitcher? Ubaldo? Marquez had a decent run early in his career I guess, but not a huge needle mover or anything
And seems like all their hitting prospects have either contact issues or they just swing at everything and don't hit the ball very hard
They can't develop good players to save their lives.
Just a quick note: Mattingly might be the most overrated hitter in MLB history. Compared to his peers, he was actually worse of a hitter than Spencer Horwitz.
It was 4 years (84-87) and he was tied for 3 in wRC+ (with Boggs) behind Jack Clark and Pedro Guerrero. Adding on a 5th year in either direction moves him down to 8th (including 83) or T-9 (including 88).I’m no fan of Mattingly as a manager but he was a legitimate superstar and probably the best hitter in MLB aside from Wade Boggs for a 5-year period in the 1980s before back problems sapped his power.
I agree with that. The lineup is too short in terms of good hitters (with too much emphasis on defense). If the plan is to play Springer/Santander in the outfield, then having an actual DH would be nice.Personally i think Vlad gets way to much flak. He's not worth the contract but this is on Shatkins. I'm pretty positive it would have been possible to commit to vlad couple of years ago for far less money. Reminds me the Subban situation in Montreal with Bergevin.
Over the last 5 seasons (2020-25) Vlad has the 12th wrc+ in baseball. He's 7th for HRs. 6th for doubles. 7th for RBIs. 12th for OBP. 10th for average. 12th for OPS. One of the only stats where he doen't perform well is WAR and i wont start with my disdain of WAR cause we'll still be here in 30 years.
The main problem of this team and this is the case since they traded Hernandez for someone who never plays is there's nobody behind Bo and Vlad capable of hitting a beach ball and running guys in.

I don't think anybody (well, of the non-deplorables on this board) are railing on Vladdy too hard. I expect a bit more production but like...look at how they're pitching to him. No pitcher in their right mind is going to challenge Vladdy in the zone when the guys behind him are as of now, useless. Even if Bo gets on in front of him you can just play it safe. Compared to 2021 when they had absolute mashers all around him in Teoscar, Bo and SiemianPersonally i think Vlad gets way to much flak. He's not worth the contract but this is on Shatkins. Honestly, them firing Schneider at this point would itself be a fireable offense. If you decide in the offseason that he's the right guy for the job and then fire him because they had a shitty 10 game stretch, you don't deserve to be in a decision-making role.Devin Williams self-immolating on the weekend probably saved this team so real hard introspection in hindsight.
Have lost 8 of 9, are getting thoroughly outgunned (outscored 58-17 in the last 9 for those keeping track) and the pitching looks to be coming off the wave they rode to start the season. The Federal New Democrats currently have more life than this team despite nearly being wiped off the face of the earth monday night.
Shatkins bought themselves a weeks worth of goodwill with getting the Vladdy deal done. That has now been used up and they need to be fired. No, you don't get to fire Schneider and act like things are fine. You need to join him in the unemployment line.
Just four hits and no walks tonight, too. Just destroying A-ball.Yesavage probably had his best start. 76 pitches and 59 strikes. 8 strikeouts and no ER in 6 innings.
My guess, that's his last start or second last start in Dunedin.
I'd love to know if he has a different two strike approach or something because the swinging-strike rate has actually ticked up a tiny bit (from 13.8% last year to 14% now) but he's trimmed the Ks by better than 33% (31.3% to 20.4%).His power has continued this year and his strikeouts are down from last year too.

Lots of up-and-downs through the first month for the prospects, but Nimmala and Yesavage in particular have been fantastic. Bloss is coming off a couple very good starts and Orelvis seems to be slowly settling in, too.
